"Index to Minutes of Wm Frierson Bivouac No 8, Shelbyville, Tennessee"

As I understand it, the Minutes of the Wm Frierson Bivouac No 8, Shelbyville, Tennessee was the minutes of a group of veterans of the civil war. The Charter reads:

The Charter of Confederate Soldiers, Tennessee Division.

Charter Members were: E Shapard, Jno L Burt, A Frankle, J R Orr, R L Singleton, Will J Muse, Jno M Hastings, S M Thompson, Leroy Taylor, and Rev Jno D Floyd.

The minutes were found in Shelbyville and transcribed by Mrs T R Marsh who in conjunction with the Bedford County Historical Society transcribed and published the minutes.

I purchased the book on a genealogical trip to Shelbyville. It cost under $10 I believe and was hard backed. I did not have time to read it thoroughly so I purchased the book to review at a later date. It contained so many names, I felt it was important to index the work and make it available to the people who are researching their ancestors in Bedford County, Tennessee. Do not limit this works to Bedford County as some members came from as far as Bell Buckle and Wartrace which is very close to the county lines.

The organization began in 1887 and continued in this book until 1912. The last 10 page numbers basically tell of years dues were paid.

The one thing the organization does do in their minutes is notify of deaths or general dates of members who have passed. They also wrote glowing obituaries of their comrads and published them in their minutes in the early years and also in the local newspapers. This book might give you an idea of where to go to look for those obituaries. It also gives details of local happenings and of several men’s petitions to be admitted to the soldiers home which I believe was an assisted living center.

You can contact the Shelbyville Library (931) 684-7323 to see if the book is still available. They had several copies when I purchased mine. If you would like me to check the book and give you general information I will do that. This will be done on as time is available. I have tried to note obituaries or death mention pages, but I am sure I missed some.

If you would like a lookup in this book, go first to the index. Check various spellings of the name (I tried to list all spellings and the pages those spellings were listed. I did not take liberties in the spelling of names – they are as they were typed in the book but remember, Mrs Marsh was transcribing from handwritten minutes.). Then email Reta Parton and give the names, page numbers and your email address. Please limit your requests to 10 pages per email.

Hope this helps you find your ancestors. Reta
