The following is from Zaccheus Wilson 1765-1842. Compiled by Mary M. Rumpe. "Robert and Eleanor Wilson were of Scoth-Irish descent, devout Presbyterians, and 'worthy and consistent members' of the Old Steele Creek Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Robert Wilson died in December 1793 and Eleanor died in the early part of 1802." Robert was referred to as "Old Robin". Some sources state that Robert was too old to serve during the revolutionary war but he is listed as a patriot by the Tennessee Society of the Daughters of The American Revolution. He was a prisoner of war in North Carolina. Seven of his sons served during the Revolutionary War. He was buried in at Steele Creek Cemetery at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was born in 1717 at Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Robert Wilson Sr. was the son of Zaccheus Wilson Sr. and Frances (Wilson). He married Eleanor Corothers circa 1748.1 Robert died on 14 December 1793 at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. |

Zaccheus was the seventh son of Robert and Eleanor Wilson. When he was only 16 years old he was captured by Cornwallis in October of 1780 while going to give warning that the British were advancing on Mecklenburg. Cornwallis decided to use the young boy as a guide to the best place to ford the Cataby River. Zaccheus purposely led the soldiers to a place where the river was deep and the currents swift. Cornwallis was angry and threatened to cut off the boy's head. Zaccheus told Cornwallis he could do it since he was his prisoner and had no weapon, but that it would be a cowardly act. Cornwallis was so impressed with his bravery that he told him to go home and take care of his mother and tell her to keep her boys at home. There has been much controversy over the wives of Zaccheus. Most of the earlier researchers have thought that Zaccheus first wife was Alice/Alsie Graham. I have not found documentation that supports this supposition. Others have suggested that his second wife was Nancy White, Actually Zaccheus's Son Zaccheus Jr. Married Nancy White as his second wife. Recently discovered documents clearly prove that his first wife was the daughter of David Russell. Will Book F of Mecklenburg Co. North Carolina list the will of David Russell, dated 13 March 1797 and proved Apr 1802 which list has one of his executors as "son in law Zaccheus Wilson". This does not state which of the daughters was married to Zaccheus, but two of his daughters were already married. I have guessed it to be Mary without any real proof. His second marriage to Nancy Long is proved by the deed of the Heirs of John Long on page 528 book F Bedford Co. Deeds Makes the following statement: "Zaccheus Wilson and Nancy his wife formerly Nancy Long, daughter and heir of John Long". This is further indicated by the fact that several of the children of Zaccheus and Nancy have the same names as those of her brother and sisters. Zaccheus came to Williamson County, Tennessee in about 1803. He served as executor of the will of his Mother Eleanor Wilson who died in 1802 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Eleanor Wilson died in the early part of 1802, and the estate was sold for three hundred dollars. Zaccheus purchased two hundred acres of land on the Harpeth River from his brother Robert Wilson in September, 1804. This land was part of the original land grant to David and William Wilson in 1796. Zaccheus donated 1 1/2 acres of land for the Harpeth Lick Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His Son, Simon Elliot, was one of the early preachers of the church. He was born in November 1765 at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.3 Zaccheus Wilson was the son of Robert Wilson Sr. and Eleanor Corothers. He married Mary Russell, daughter of David Russell, before 1797.4 He married Nancy Long, daughter of John Long, before 1816.5,6 Zaccheus died on 21 October 1842 at Williamson County, Tennessee, at age 76.7 He was buried in at Wilson Cemetery at Williamson County, Tennessee.8 |

Mary Rempe says that Mary C. Wilson married Holcomb B. Harvey in 1842. This seems doubtful since Mary C. was listed as Mary Willson in the probate of the will of Zaccheus in 1842 and at the settlement in 1847. The other married daughters were listed by married names. The Mary Wilson listed in the 1850 Census of Pontotoc County Mississippi in the household of William Wilson is believed to be the daughter of Zaccheus Wilson. She was born circa 1819 at Williamson County, Tennessee. Mary C. Wilson was the daughter of Zaccheus Wilson and Nancy Long.3 |
