John apparently came with his father to Ohio from Greene County, Pennsylvania in about 1816. His father (born 1780) was shown in the 1810 Greene County, Pennsylvania census with 5 children under age 10. John W. was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in 2nd Ward, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. A John Grant was witness to proved will of John Stites Gano on 12/24/1821 and again on 1/29/1822 . This appears to be the same John S. Gano that was a constituent member of the original Columbia Baptist Church organized in 1790 as listed in Vol. 11 No. 4 of the Tracer (Publication of the Hamilton County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society). This reference mentions Major Benjamin Stites that was an Indian fighter in early Hamilton County history. Perhaps John Stites Gano was related to this Stites. This may have been the father of John W. Grant. John W. would probably have been too young to witness a will on this date. He was born circa 1801 at Greene County, Pennsylvania. John W. Grant was the son of John Grant and Hulda Strawn. He married Anna Bateman on 17 December 1818 at Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.
