John (The Elder) Grant, sometimes refered to as John Grant, Jr. was probably a Quaker although no records of him have been found in any of the monthly meetings. He probably lived too far from the meeting places to attend. He owned considerable property on Cedar Creek, which is now the boundary between Berkely and Lacey townships in Ocean Co. New Jersey. James W. Hook , in his research, proved or attempted to prove the family of John (The Elder) Grant using land records. This relationship is based on each of the male children receiving 2 parts and female children receiving 1 part when the parent died intestate. John died intestate and it appears that he had three daughters and one son. The result was that the son James received 2 parts and the three daughter each received one part. James and Deborah are proved to be children by the deed found in deed book y pp 578/79 , Monmouth Co., NJ. This deed shows that James and Deborah were entitled to 3/5 of the land as heirs and that James had quit claimed his part to Deborah and her husband John Mathis in a deed dated 13 day of the twelfth month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred ninty nine. These deeds definately prove the relationship of James and Deborah, the other daughters are not so positive and those researching these members are encouraged to more carefully check the records.  . He was born circa 1725 at Burlington, New Jersey. John (The Elder) Grant was the son of John Grant. He married Sarah Irons, daughter of James Irons and Martha Burdsal, on 3 November 1750 at Monmouth County, New Jersey.1 John died circa 1790 at Dover, New Jersey. |

Myron Scott on page 12 states---- The younger sons (of Thomas) John and David upon their father dying intestate in 1690 , are believed to have followed the iron workers, the farmers, the Quakers, and especially the Rhode Ilanders, to Shrewsbury, Monmonth and Burlington Cos., N.J. John Grant Sr was known to be in New Jersey on 9 April, 1722 when he witnessed the will of Edward Rockhill, a Quaker, of Chesterfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. Records of the West New Jersey Proprietors and their Surveyor General at Burlington, New Jersey (Book M, part first, pp. 34/35) show a warrant dated 23 May, 1722 that directed James Alexander, the Surveyor General to survey 1664 acres of land for Thomas Wetherell. A second warrant on page 35 of the same books shows that this land was between Little Egg Harbor and Wading Rivers which would locate it west of Little Egg Harbor in Burlington County. On 20 February, 1723 Thomas Wetherell assigned 650 acres to John Grant Sr, Stephen Burdsall, Nathaniel Burdsall and others. John Grant Sr. and the Burdsall's (Stephen Burdsall was probably the father of John Grant Sr's wife Mabel and Nathaniel was his brother) and most probably the others were "people called Quakers". Quite likely Thomas Wetherell was a Quaker and obtained his 1640 acres to establish a Quaker colony which would be near the Quaker settlement of Little Egg Harbor. John died at Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was born on 21 January 1678.3 He was the son of Thomas Grant and Sarah Brooks. He married Mabel Burdsal, daughter of Steven Burdsal and Mary (Burdsal), circa 1702. |
