Hi John,
Thanks for your response. It does in deed look as though there may be a connection. I did see your posting on rootsweb. I have not be able to find Alfred in the 1850 census. He was married to Catherine Broadhead by then, and they lived in a very small town called Arnold outside of Jacksonville, Illinois.
I came across some information about land purchases by a Perkins Thompson in 1842. He bought 9,000 acres. That's a lot of land. As soon as I get more details of this, I will send it along to you.
Have you found Perkins in the 1850 census? I found him in the 1840 census, but of course there are no details to speak of in the census records for that year.
