Lloyd Stanford Smith - The Olympian - (Mar/12/2005)

Lloyd Stanford Smith, Jr., 81, of Lacey, died March 9, 2005. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 18, 1923 to Lloyd S. Smith, Sr. and Helen C. Smith. After graduating from Central High School in Omaha and spending one year at the University of Nebraska, he entered the United States Naval Academy in 1942, and graduated in 1945. He married the love of his life, Doris Ann Braman, on June 9, 1945, and they spent the next 59 years perfecting their romance. Stan's career in the United States Navy spanned 30 years, and he retired in 1975, having attained the rank of Captain. Among his many achievements, the pinnacle was perhaps his being Commander of the U.S.S. Daniel Webster, one of the first Polaris missile submarines. Upon retirement, Stan and Dory moved to Sequim, Washington, where they pursued their passions for birdwatching, travel, and golf. Stan became a skilled nature photographer, which added to his stature as a legendary birding expert in the Port Angeles area. Stan and Dory moved to Lacey in 1996, and found a new home in the Panorama City community. Stan became a volunteer driver for other residents, and provided computer help services as well. The development of two serious illnesses slowed him down but never broke his spirit. To the end he was an inspiration to all those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his beloved sister, Jane. He is survived by his wife, Doris; his three children, Ann Smith, Dan Smith, and Elizabeth Eisenmann; and six grandchildren, Melissa Eisenmann, Jared Eisenmann, Rebecca Smith, Madeleine Smith, Nellie Smith, and Amy Faget. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Olympia at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2005. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Nature Conservancy, or to the donor's charity of choice.
