     John William Bruner was born on 13 November 1845 at Anderson County, Kentucky.2,1,3,4 He was the son of Elijah Bruner and Elizabeth Naylor.2 John William Bruner appeared in the census of 13 September 1860 in the household of Elijah Bruner and Elizabeth Naylor at T 12; R 8, Vancils Point, Macoupin County, Illinois.2 John William Bruner began military service on 25 February 1864 at Camp Duncan, Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois.5 He ended military service on 8 August 1865 at Post Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas.5 He married Clarinda Jane Landrith, daughter of Hiram Thompson Landrith and Exona Nevins, on 28 October 1866 at Macoupin County, Illinois.6,5 John William Bruner and Clarinda Jane Landrith appeared in the census of 14 June 1900 at Itasca Township, Sherman County, Kansas.3 John William Bruner died on 31 May 1924 at age 78.1 He was buried at Dunkard Cemetery, Redfield, Bourbon County, Kansas.7,8

He voluntarily enlisted in the Union Army 25 Feb 1865 as an unmarried, 19-year-old Illinois farmer; mustered in 27 Feb 1865 at Camp Duncan, Jacksonville, Morgan Co., Ill. as a Private into the 14th Illinois Infantry, Co., E. (under Gen. Sherman's command); mustered out 8 Aug 1865 from Post Hospital at Fort Leavenworth, Ks.; Certificate of Honorable Discharge dated 25 Sep 1866. The marriage was performed by one John N. Austin; John William, not yet 21 years of age at the time of his marriage, duly sworn and written consent was given by his father, Elijah Bruner. Cemetery is well kept, in reasonably current use, adjacent to Church of the Brethren and gravestone is clearly inscribed "1845 - 1924"...

    ...The first is her signature, I seeing for the first time (in SR 001, Letter to Mary Jane Harford Buck) she herself actually spelled her name "C-l-a-r-i-n-d-a." Within the family her name was pronounced "Cla-rin´-dee". Are you aware her gravestone marker spells her name "C-l-e-a-r-i-n-d-a-y"? She and John William are buried side by side in the old Dunkard Cemetery beside their church some 4 or 5 miles south of Redfield, Kansas. As a result some confusion has brewed in recent years between us cousins...
