CARTER COUNTY CENSUS LISTING FOR THE YEAR 1830
    A through L

This index of heads of households was compiled by Jackie and Dawn Trivette Peters. ©1997.

The 1830 census is the first census for Carter County that is in existence. The census for the years 1800, 1810 and 1820 have been destroyed. In 1830, Carter County included the area that became Johnson County in 1836. It also included t he area that became the eastern section of Unicoi County in 1875. We have broken down each age group so there will be no need for position counting. The listing contains the names of the heads of households, page number from the original cens us record, a list of males on the left and females to the right.

Some of these names where difficult to translate. If you do not find a person in this index that you think should be there, we suggest that you consult the original census records and draw your own conclusions. Also, please take special care i n how you look up a name. Lewis may be spelled Luis, Forbes as Farbus, Lacy as Lasy, etc....

CARTER COUNTY CENSUS LISTING FOR THE YEAR 1840 A through L

This census listing was compiled by Jackie and Dawn Trivette Peters. ©1997.

The 1840 census is the first census after the 1836 Tennessee State Convention dropped the Captain's Companies and adopted civil districts. In 1836, Johnson County was formed from the eastern part of Carter County causing the 1840 census of Carter Co unty to be smaller than the 1830 census. Carter County still contained what is now the eastern section of Unicoi County.

We have broken down each age group so there will be no need for position counting. The listing contains the names of the heads of households, page number from the original census record, a house number that we assigned as a position on each page, th e district number and a list of males on the left and females to the right.

Some of these names where difficult to translate. If you do not find a person in this index that you think should be there, we suggest that you consult the original census records and draw your own conclusions. Also, please take special care i n how you look up a name. We have enclosed in brackets [ ] what we think is the correct name. Dugger was spelled Dugar, Bomans and Bowmans were both listed, Goodwins are listed as Gudins, etc....
