Daniel B. Jean

Daniel Burnett Jean was the oldest child of John and Alcy Jean.  He was born in Georgia on May 29, 1806.

The 1830 census places Daniel and his wife in Coweta County, Georgia.

The 1840 Heard County, Georgia census lists Daniel with his wife and a daughter and two sons.  In 1850, Daniel is still in Heard County, Georgia, with a wife and six children..

The 1860 census finds Daniel and his family in Union County, Arkansas.  On June 19, 1861, two of his sons, John James and Robert Mathis, enlisted in Company G, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Three Creeks, Union County, Arkansas.

Daniel is listed on the 1868 Little River County, Arkansas tax roles, and the 1870 Little River County census.

Mary Carmichael Jean is listed as head of household in the 1880 Little River County, Johnson Township, census.  Living with her is her 44 year old son, John J. Jean.

Mary, along with sons, Hardy Hopson and Robert Mathis, are enumerated on the 1885 Little River County Tax List.

I would like to thank Claude and Kathy Jeans of Ashdown, Arkansas for sharing Daniel's family story with me and hosting my visit to that community.  They drove me all over southern Arkansas visiting courthouses and cemeteries.  Claude is descended from Daniel through his son, Robert Mathis Jean.

BALEY B. BAKER and LILLIE ELIZABETH PERRY built a new house, barns, smoke house, and fenced in a pasture for cows, pigs, and stock.  They planted a new orchard near the new home and maintained the old one.  They produced fruits, meat, eggs, vegetables, milk and cream. They are noted to have had the best watermelons in the area and provided seeds for growers.  In the Fall, some 12 pecan trees produced sacks of nuts for the market and family.  They made many trips to the markets and villages to sell produce.  Baley exchanged farm produce at the general store for seed, commercial fertilizer, planting seed, tools, groceries and clothing. Cotton was their money crop.  He and JAMES L. PERRY also leased syrup mills and made syrup from their fields and did their neighbors for part of the syrup.  He sold syrup along with other produce at the Wesson Lumber Company camps.

When Baley's brother-in-law, J. CLARK BYRD, decided to try farming, he
purchased an adjoining farm and the two built two new houses, one for the
Byrd's and one for Baley's family.  By this time, Baley had secured a fine bay mare that bore two mules.  This gave him three animals for plowing.  At approximately the same time, he bought a new Studebaker wagon with red wheels.  From materials gathered from the old Sayers house, he built a barn, crib, smokehouse and shelter for the animals.

During the summer and winter, Baley did what he called work where he found jobs without much difficulty. He was known widely for his ability and
faithfulness. He became an expert in saw filing and setting for wood or log
cutting. People came to his home to have their tools sharpened and get a hair cut. He did some oil field work but mostly built houses, bridges and repaired roads. In later life he operated a blacksmith shop and did considerable painting of houses that he thought led to the cancer of the stomach that eventually killed him.

The couple had 11 children all of which reached adulthood except Mertie who was born on March 5, 1910 and died October 27, 1912 of diphtheria.

As the family grew in numbers, age and experience, more land was needed to provide for them.  Often land was rented.   Jayce Meadows promised to sell Baley his place, but the very day the deal was to be consummated at the courthouse in Homer, Louisiana, Meadows came by and said he had already sold the place for more money.  After Baley tried unsuccessfully to purchase the Jayce Meadow's place, he bought some forty acres from J. L. PERRY that were adjacent his farm.  Later, the family became dissatisfied with Holly Grove which was eight miles from Summerfield where the children were bussed to school.  An old farm large house, The Kennedy Place, available some three miles from Summerfield, Louisiana was leased to provide room for a growing herd of cattle and ground for planting.  The meadows were cut by the Kennedy families each year and bailed into hay and divided among those participating.  The Kennedy Place was ideal for a growing family.  They participated in Boy Scouts, 4-H Club, county fair exhibits, drama, music, athletics and the like.

The older children began graduating from high school and either entering
college or taking jobs elsewhere.  The twins were born after several had left home. This was when a combination of the depression and a drought forced banks to demand payment on seed and fertilizer.  The family secured a private loan, saved the farm, and moved back to the J. L. PERRY home at Holly Grove until the older children left for college and elsewhere. The much smaller family then moved to El Dorado, Arkansas where odd jobs were available.  Baley lost his health, retired and lived in a house on the Claude and Margaret BAKER place until his death in 1956.  Lillie Elizabeth then moved to Houston, Texas where she lived with Corrine taking care of Sandra McDade when she was a child and then living in retirement until her death on September 22, 1970.  Both Baley B. BAKER and Lillie Elizabeth BAKER are buried at Holly Grove Cemetery.
