William Lumpkin Jean was born in Heard County, Georgia on June 2, 1835. He was the youngest child of John and Alcy Jean.
He is first enumerated in the 1850 Heard County, Georgia census living with his parents and older sister, Martha. He is again enumerated in the 1850 Randolph County, Alabama census.
Lumpkin purchased 39 acres of land in Columbia County, Arkansas on May 3, 1858.
He is enumerated in the 1860 Columbia County, Arkansas census in the household of John Pickering.
Lumpkin served as a Private in Company G, 6th Arkansas Infantry, CSA He enlisted May 29, 1861 at Little Rock, Arkansas in the Columbia Guards and was discharged November 21, 1861. His pension records show that he served from July 1862 to February 1863. Perhaps he rejoined the unit.
In 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910, he is listed in the Union County, Arkansas census.
Lumpkin applied for a pension from the State of Arkansas on April 29, 1916 based on his Civil War service, stating he was incapacitated to perform manual labor due to old age. The pension of $100 was approved on July 26, 1916. He died six months later of Chronic Nephistis.

Lumpkin's final resting place is in the Jolly Cemetery, Union County, Arkansas. His headstone bears a Huguenot cross and the inscription, We trust our loss will be his gain, and that with Christ he's gone to reign.

Mattie Jane Wise Jean was a sister to my grandmother, Maggie Wise Greer. I remember Aunt Mattie Jane, and am 99% sure that her husband's name was Horace (same as their son). I do not remember him, but remember family members referring to him as Uncle Horace. They lived at Risen, Arkansas near Stuttgart. He was a Baptist preacher. Their son Horace had tuberculosis at one time, but am not sure if that's what he died of. He died fairly young, probably in his forties. As far as I know, he was never married. --------Martha Harson
