Subj: William Ashley and Agnes; Thomas Ashley; Abbeville Co., SC
from The Ashley Family by Allen L. and Julia Robertson Ashley
From: Candace Gravelle
The following are just a few pages from the book that Allen Lane Ashley and his wife Julia Robertson Ashley wrote about William Ashley, Rev. War. soldier and his wife Agnes and their son Thomas Ashley and his wife Nancy Pruitt. ... It sounds like an interesting book, and this is just a few pages of it that was sent to me last year. It would be interesting to see which children are listed for William and Agnes (Anna)'s son William Ashley, who is shown to be born ca 1792 with no wife's name listed in this little excerpt. PREFACE
Edward W. Ashley (b. June 26, 1805) who m. Elizabeth Abel All four of the children and their spouses are buried in the cemetery at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Rt. 1, Belton, S.C. It is unfortunate but true that no family history can ever be completely perfect, or perfectly complete. There are many ways in which mistakes and omissions can occur in records, and no one regrets even the least of these more than the compilers. In some cases, family data is very incomplete, but in every case, all possible information has been given. If there is more data for some families than for others, it is only because there was more data available for these families. This record, undertaken as a labor of love by the compilers, has grown into this genealogical family history only because of the help, encouragement, and cooperation of many other Ashley descendants. To each of these, we are extremely grateful.
Allen and Julia Ashley [Note: revised to current address -jr] The following is a lineage of the Ashley family. It was supplied from data from the Maryland archives, the North Carolina archives, the South Carolina archives, and many other sources. Circumstantial evidence has placed Isaac as father of William and William as father of William, Jr. However, from the names in the wills listing the two Williams as sons, and from their living on "Ashley's Lott," all real evidence and circumstantial evidence seems to indicate that the lineage below is correct. After the first two generations, documentation is complete. ISAAC ASHLEY (b. ca. 1660; will dated 1709) married ELIZA and owned the plantation "Ashley's Lott" in Kent County, Maryland. He had the following children: John Ashley, Isaac Ashley, William Ashley, Thomas Ashley, Abraham Ashley, and a daughter who married a Mr. Beck. WILLIAM ASHLEY (b. ca. 1700; son of Isaac/& Eliza Ashley) had a wife named MARY. In his will, dated 1752, he mentions his wife. Mary and the following children: William Ashley, Jr., Joshua Ashley, John Jones Ashley. They resided in Kent Co., Maryland, on part of "Ashley's Lott." WILLIAM ASHLEY, JR. (b. ca. 1725; son of William and Mary Ashley) married Sophie and lived in Kent Co., Maryland. According to the census records, he had nine children: William A. Ashley, John Ashley, Joshua Ashley, Aaron Ashley, Moses Ashley, and Abraham Ashley, as well as three unnamed daughters. The oldest son, Wm. A. Ashley, served in the American Revolution. All six brothers settled in the Abbeville Co. area over a 40 year period. The brothers of William A. Ashley and their descendants have been known as the "Little River Ashleys." WILLIAM A. ASHLEY (b. 1757 in Kent Co., Md.; d. Mar. 3, 1838, in Anderson Co., SC) was the son of William and Mary Ashley. He enlisted in the middle of May, 1778, in the Revolutionary Army, serving as a Corporal. He enlisted in Capt. Leagong's Company, in the squadron of cavalry commanded by Col. Cowatch attached to a body of troops known by the name "Pulaski's Corps." He served in the same company, later commanded by Capt. Brown, until the middle of September, 1779, when he was honorable discharged at Beaufort, South Carolina. He and his wife AGNESS (or Ann, as she was called) settled in the present Abbeville County, SC, area. In 1845, Agness Ashley of Abbeville Co., SC, widow of William A. Ashley, applied for a pension based upon her husband's Agness Ashley died in 1849 at the home of her daughter Sophia Smith. William A. and Agnes Ashley had several children, including several whose names are not known. The couple had the following children:
Thomas Ashley (b. ca. 1781) m. Nancy Pruitt Three other boys and two girls who are not named in the records available It is not known where William and Agnes Ashley are buried, but it is believed that they were buried in now unmarked graves at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Rt. 1, Belton, SC. |
