Note on back by Joe T. Robertson (s. of Mandy Becky) identified this as "Uncle Joseph Ashley, half-brother of mother." Joe T. Robertson was almost certainly named for this uncle.

This was a tin-type and I had to do a lot of repair to the left side of his face. His left eye is actually a copy of his right eye.
