John and Troie,

I am sorry to report that I was not able to obtain Amanda B.'s and
Daniel's death certificates today. A search was made in Montgomery,
but they were unable to locate them. I went by the Genealogy Center
and located Moses and Annie on the Calhoun l880 Census, which reads as
follows:

Moses Ashley Age 66 B. SC
          Annie 31 SC
               LaDove 15 AL
               Moses 12 AL
              Robert O or P 10 AL

On the Soundex Index it looked like Robert P.--a very fat P. On the
Census it looked like a fat O. Anyway LaDove and Robert have picked
up another brother that we didn't know about--another Moses!! Did you
realize that there was a 35 year difference in Moses and annie's ages?

Tom Mullins called me today from the Anniston Library. He said that he
looked at the l870 Greene County Census in the Forkland Post Office
area. This is where Moses resided in the l860 Greene County Census.
He said he was able to read every frame and did not see Moses listed,
nor was he listed in the l870 Census Index. He said that he checked
the l870 census indexes in Mississippi and Georgia, and Moses was not
listed on them. One of the at the librarians at the Genealogy Center
told me that it could be that they (Moses) were not home the day the
census taker came to visit. I still think they were in Greene County
in 1970. Again, they were in Greene County when Robert was born in
l869, and they paid taxes on their land in Greene County in 1974. Tom
Mullins said he found a lot of information on Moses and Annie, but he
could not find anything on Amanda B. The information that he found on
Moses is information that I already have--census and marriage records.
He said he did find a Marriage record for Annie and a J. C. Ross in
l884, one year after Moses's death. He also has an article where
Annie and her son Moses were fined $l00 for selling "shinny." He is
sending me the article.

The l960 Greene County Census reads as follows:
Moses Ashley Age 46 B. SC Occupation -
Planter
                 N. R. Ashley 28 AL Sex F
                  J. B. Ashley l2 Al Sex M
                  S. A. Ashley 6 AL Sex F
                   R. M. Ashley 1 Al Sex F
Note: R. M. Ashley was Rebecca M., she was born in l859.

I found the following in the Genealogy Center today: January
l9, l88l, Wednesday--"Excerps of Tuscaloosa Times, l88l - l886 Vol. I,
" Married by Rev. James C. Foster at the residence of Mr. Joseph
Ashley, December 23, Mr O. N. Holmes and Miss Rebecca Kirksey - all of
this county." Could this be Joseph, the son of Moses? This is
the first time I have run across a Joseph Ashley, other than in the
census.
