Subj: Annie "R.", Asheys in Tuscaloosa 1870, Moses in Greene 1870

Subj: Annie "R.", Asheys in Tuscaloosa 1870, Moses in Greene 1870

I really don't think that Nancy R. Lay, who married Moses in l853,
was Annie R. Leigh's sister. In the 1850 greene County Census, Nancy R.
is listed in her father's household, Richard Lay, age 45, B. in SC. She
is listed as 18, B. in AL. She also has a brother listed, Samuel Lay,
age l6, B. in AL. In this census, there were two more Nancy Lays
listed. One was quite young, and the other one was in her twenties.
When I go back to the Genealogy Center this week, I am going to look in
the Greene County 1850 Census Index to see if I can find leigh's listed.
John, you mentioned the "R." in Annie's name. She was listed as Annie
R. Leigh on Troie's DAR application. On the l874 Tax Records for Greene
County, She is listed as Annie R. Ashley; therefore, I think she picked
up the "R." in her name before she married again after Moses death.

Troie, when I looked at the l870 Tuscaloosa County Census, the only
Ashley's I found were C. R. Ashley and James G, Ashley. I believe that
James G. Ashley is of our line because in James G.'s marriage record it
has listed, "L.S. James G. Ashley and John T. Robertson." If you can
obtain a copy of the l870 Greene County Census, and you have time to
look at it frame by frame to see if you can find Moses's household
listed, it would be helpful. Here and in the l850 Greene County Census
Index in Anniston Public Library, he is not listed. The film that I
viewed here in Mobile had over a fourth of the frames that were damaged
and not readable. The gentleman that viewed the film at the Anniston
Public Library only viewed the Forkland frames of the film. This is
where Moses lived in the l860 Greene County Census. Mr. Mullins at the
Anniston Library did not find Moses on the frames that he viewed;
however, he said the frames he viewed were not damaged. As I have
stated before, perhaps Moses and his family were not home when the
census taker came to visit in l870.

I am going back to the Genealogy [library] this week, I will let you
know what I discover there. ...

Note: I forgot to mention that Nancy R. Lay did not have a mother
listed in her household in the l850 Greene County Census.
