The new Johns Crest was commissi

The Johns Crest was commissioned for the Johns Family History Association by the late Ben Johns. Ben was a noted architect in Richmond,VA and a strong supporter of Johns research. The design symbolism is generally as follows ...

The three symbols at the top of the shield (raven, lion rampant and garb or wheatsheaf) are taken from the coats of arms of several Johns families and represent all people of that name. The red cross and sword are from the coat of arms of the City of London. The green segment represent "greener pastures" and the eagle's head thereon is symbolic of the United States (the entire US eagle looked too cramped in the space available). The blue and white pile (triangle) represents the Atlantic ocean while the ship thereon represents the original emigrants journey as well as their shipbuilding background. The crest above the shield picks up the previous theme, the sail being decorated with the flag of England (cross of St. George) and a five pointed star which appears (albeit in a different colour) on the US flag. The five pointed star (or mullet) is also found on several coats of arms recorded for the surname Johns. The motto is take from one of the Johns coats of arms and means "God feeds the ravens). Finally, the mantling is blue and red - again representing England and the USA.
