John Stanley of Darlington, South Carolina

John Stanley and Sarah Stewart were my 4th great grandparents. This is a far as I can trace my family tree. All we have found to document their life in South Carolina is the 1800 Census, 1810 Census, some land documents, and a letter written in 1924 by great grandson John H. Stanley.

JOHN1 STANLEY was born Bef. 1775 in Darlington District, S.C., and died Bef. 1817 in Darlington District, S.C.. He married SARAH (SALLIE) STEWART Aft. 1790 in Darlington District (probably). She was born Abt. 1774 in S.C., and died Abt. 1854 in Travis County, TX.

Thomas Edward Stanley and Holland West Gatlin were my 3rd great grandparents:

THOMAS EDWARD2 STANLEY (JOHN1) was born January 22, 1803 in Darlington District, S.C., and died 1881 in Lampasas Co. TX, buried in family Cemetery (off Menchaca Rd.). He married HOLLAND WEST GATLIN September 22, 1825 in Williamson Co. TN, daughter of WILLIAM GATLIN and SARAH HANKS. She was born July 04, 1800 in TN, and died July 04, 1863 in Lampasas Co. TX, buried in family Cemetery (off Menchaca Rd.).

Children of THOMAS STANLEY and HOLLAND GATLIN are:

i. SARAH JANE STANLEY.

ii. JOHN H. STANLEY, b. 1830, TN; d. Bet. 1861 � 1865. Namesake of the writer of the 1924 letter. Favorite brother of Thomas Edward Stanley II. Never married. Royal Arch Mason, and very proficient in the "esooterie" (esoteric) work. A Confederate volunteer at the beginning of the Civil War, on Gen. Sibley's staff. Died in New Mexico campaign.

iii. THOMAS EDWARD "BUTTERMILK" STANLEY, b. January 09, 1832, Giles Co., TN; d. October 16, 1921, Lampasas Co. TX, buried in Walker Cemetery.

iv. WILLIAM J. STANLEY, b. 1834, Mississippi; d. Bet. August 06 - 07, 1887, Florence, Williamson Co., TX.

v. BOOKER FOSTER STANLEY, b. 1833, TN; d. September 05, 1865, Travis Co. TX.

vi. JOE STANLEY, b. 1837, Mississippi; d. 1865.

vii. JEFFERSON WARD "JEFF" STANLEY, b. 1838, MS; d. April 1859, Travis Co. TX; m. MARY HEISSNER. assassinated 2 or 3 years before civil war. The assassin was hung by a mob.

viii. GEORGE W. STANLEY, b. 1840, Mississippi; d. Camp Butler, IL, Prisoner of War (Civil War).

ix. HENRY H. STANLEY, b. 1842, Mississippi; d. Near Hereford, TX; m. (1) MAGGIE DORIS; m. (2) CARRIE POWELL, April 25, 1866. From 1924 letter: 2 sets of children. 3 boys from 1st mar., Edward, Frank and Alf. Frank. Became a very successful teacher. Lived near Hereford with 2nd wife and children - 2boys & 2 girls.

x. ELIAS S. "LIGHT" STANLEY, b. 1844, Mississippi; d. Travis Co. TX.

WILLIAM JAMES3 STANLEY (THOMAS EDWARD2, JOHN1) was born April 05, 1834 in MS, and died August 06, 1887 in Andice, Williamson Co., TX. He married MARTHA ANN GRUMBLES June 21, 1855 in Travis Co., TX. She was born January 16, 1832 in Dallas, AL, and died November 01, 1881 in Williamson Co., TX.

i. WILLIAM HENRY STANLEY, b. February 28, 1856; d. December 14, 1918, Ok.

ii. MARTHA JANE STANLEY, b. April 09, 1857; d. December 27, 1942; m. October 14, 1875, Williamson Co., TX.

iii. JOHN B. STANLEY, b. June 30, 1858 and died March 19, 1932 in Odem, Texas. He married Mat Ellen Dyches December 21, 1882 in Williamson County, Texas, daughter of John Dyches and Ellen Low. She was born August 1, 1864, and died June 30, 1948 in Odem, Texas.

iv. SARAH MARGARET STANLEY, b. August 17, 1859, AL; d. February 24, 1940.

v. LOUISA HOLLAND STANLEY was born January 16, 1862 in Williamson CO, Texas, and died December 25, 1935 in Anson, Jones CO, Texas. She married JAMES RAY DEAN December 21, 1881 in Williamson CO, Texas, son of JAMES DEAN and MARY MORROW. He was born March 1850, and died July 22, 1929 in Anson, Jones CO, Texas.

John B. Stanley and Mattie Stanley were my great grandparents:

JOHN B. STANLEY, b. June 30, 1858 and died March 19, 1932 in Odem, Texas, son of William James Stanley and Martha Ann Grumbles. He married Mat Ellen (Mattie) Dyches December 21, 1882 in Williamson County, Texas, daughter of John Dyches and Ellen Low. She was born August 1, 1864, and died June 30, 1948 in Odem, Texas.

Children of John and Mattie:

i. Jesse Lee Stanley, born July 18, 1887 in Florence, Williamson Co., Texas; died December 17, 1959 in Odem, Texas. He married Margie Lee Mann August 27, 1910 in Truby, Texas. She was born August 6, 1890 in Greenbriar, Faulkner, Arkansas, and died February 14, 1978 in Corpus Christi, Nueces, Texas. She was the daughter of Jesse Mann and Mary Ann Morrison.

ii. Sam Bob Stanley born January 12, 1892 died August 27, 1973 in Odem, Texas. He married Lesley M. born January 27, 1887 died May, 18, 1969 in Nueces Co., Texas.

iii. Nettie Hollin Stanley born September 3, 1883; died November 15, 1969 in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., Texas. She married Green Wade Vickers September 15, 1901 in Williamson Co., Texas.

iv. Johnnie Brookin Stanley born October 16, 1899 and died October 12, 1931 in Truby, Texas. She married Leonard Cole.

v. Alonzo Thomas (Lonzo) Stanley born June 10, 1885 in Williamson Co., Texas; died October 1, 1925. He married Flora F. McCoy May 11, 1907 in Truby, Texas. She was born February 6, 1892 in AR and died December 14, 1969 in Truby, Texas.

J.B. Stanley, 73, of Odem died Friday morning at 11 o'clock at a local hospital. Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife, two sons J.L. Stanley of Gregory, Sam B. Stanley of Odem; one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Vickers of Pleasanton; three sisters, Mrs. King Tucker of Georgetown, Mrs. William Tucker of Georgetown, Mrs. J.R. Dean of Sylvester; one brother, S.P. Stanley of Odem.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 o'clock from the First Methodist church in Odem with the Rev. M.L. Darby officiating. Internment will be in the Odem cemetery under the direction of David T. Peel.

Illness is Fatal To Mrs. Stanley, Resident of Odem

ODEM, Texas. Mrs. Mattie Stanley, 83, resident of Odem for the past 35 years, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the home of her son, Jess Stanley, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church in Odem. Burial will be in Odem Cemetery, under direction of Starbuck Funeral Home of Sinton.

Surviving are two sons, Jess and Sam Stanley, both of Odem; one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Vickers of Pleasanton; one sister, Mrs. N.S. McKinney of Carlton, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Jesse Lee Stanley, born July 18, 1887 in Florence, Williamson Co., Texas; died December 17, 1959 in Odem, Texas. He married Margie Lee Mann August 27, 1910 in Truby, Texas. She was born August 6, 1890 in Greenbriar, Faulkner, Arkansas, and died February 14, 1978 in Corpus Christi, Nueces, Texas. She was the daughter of Jesse Mann and Mary Ann Morrison.
