WILLIAM SELKDEN (1512-1551)
William Selkeden (3) removed from Upper Breeding to Ticehurst before the birth of his first son in 1542.  He and his mother both died in October 1551 and were buried at Upper Breeding.  Both may have succumbed to the 1551 epidemic of sweating sickness which, within 24 hours of the appearance of symptoms, resulted in either recovery or death.

(“…The Sweat, The Swat, New Acquaintance, Stoupe, or Knave know thy master. It was claimed that it only killed the rich, middle aged…” Ian Jessiman  The Plague, England and Loughborough 1539 - 1640)

WILLIAM SELDEN (~1548-1621)
William Selden (4) removed from Ticehurst to Wadhurst (about 5 miles) about 1580.  He is the first to have shortened his surname from Selkeden (while his brother Richard continued to use Selkeden).
