Haplogroup E3a - Haplogroup E3a is an Africa lineage. It is currently hypothesized that this haplogroup dispersed south from northern Africa within the last 3,000 years, by the Bantu agricultural expansion. E3a is also the most common lineage among African Americans

My Notes On This Group: The Roman Empire was the first to use troops all over the world they left blood groups ever where they went from Countries of Africa to England: The Roman Empire was one of the VAST spreading Empires in the World to first use troops of other Countries it conquered. The use of using other troops from Conquered Countries spread with each developing Empire.

JOHNSON AND ALLIED FAMILES OF THE MEHERRIN RIVER

The Meherrin River rises in Virginia and flows S into North Carolina where it forms the Hertford-Northampton Co line for approx. 9 Mi. after which it flows SE across Hertford County into the Chowan River. Parkers Ferry has been operated across the Meherrin River near its mouth since the early years of the 20th century http://home.att.net/~xcc2all/cfreddukefiles/c_fred_duke_files_before1750.htm

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY 1703 from Charles City Co.

1710, the Governor’s Council of Virginia passed a resolution prohibiting settlement between the Nottaway and Meherrin Rivers. Settlers moved into the area anyway, and by a few years later, no official barrier to immigration existed. South Quay, a small settlement on the Blackwater River, appeared on maps as early as 1657. By 1701, it was a landing for shipping from the North Carolina sounds, and a trading post there was run by one John Cotton. The settlement was located approximately four miles north of modern Franklin, in Southampton County. By 1714, hundreds of families with uncertain land grants were living in the region west of the Blackwater and Chowan Rivers. At the time, North Carolina was granting land as far north as the west side of the Nottaway, which today is entirely in Virginia. A population described as a “loose and disorderly people” flocked into, the contested zone between the two colonies. 1714 July, Governor Spotswood started out on his six-week expedition to the southern frontier to carry out the provisions of the treaties he had made. At this time Colonel John Allen, of Surry, laid out the tract of land, six miles square (23,040 acres) on both sides of Meherrin River, on which the Indians would settle. This was in later Brunswick County, near Lawrenceville [in present-day Brunswick County]. http://www.poythress.net/Wall.html

1716 a man wrote from Chowan, North Carolina, to Richard Beresford, ‘I am just returned from Virginia where I was informed that the fort built at Christ Anna by Col. Spotswood was finished. It lyes on Meherrin River abough a small dies march from Moratoke [old name for Roanoke River], and about 50 or 60 miles from some part of James River and Appamatocks River. The fort consists of five large pentagonal log-houses which serve for bastions, and a curtain of mault [split] wood with earth on the inside from one house to another. Each house has a great gun 1400 lb. Each, etc…

"‘I say [saw] abundance of iron, steel, and other utensils carring thither. There is a couple of forges sett upp…

"This description coincides with that of Jacques Fontaine who accompanied Governor Spotswood to Christanna in 1716. In his ‘Memoirs’ he said it was an ‘inclosure of five sides, made only with palisades, and instead of five bastions, there are five houses; each side of the five sides is 100 yards long.’ http://www.poythress.net/Wall.html

1717 July 15, , Matthew Seller bought 50 acres on Reedy Swamp in Chowan County from Benjamin Foremen, Sr., planter, of Albemarle County. The land was adjacent to land of John Blackburn and Sharer, and the deed was witnessed by John Drew and Robert Sharer (l/471). Albemarle County had ceased to exist in 1670; however, the name evidently continued in use by residents of the area for as long as forty years later.  http://www.sellers-sellars-sollars-zellars.net/jamesimarlowertf.htm.htm

1727 ERA: John Seller(s) or Cellars was living in Bertie County in 1727, when he bought 100 acres of land from Matthew Sellers on the south side of the Meherrin River at “Patty’s Delight” (B/314). It appears on the basis of geographical association that this was probably the John Seler who signed a petition to the Governor of Virginia in 1722, to establish a customs port on the Virginia-North Carolina border at the confluence of the Blackwater and Nottaway Rivers, in order to legalize and therefore to encourage shipping on those rivers, which connect with Albemarle Sound and the ocean. The petitioners described themselves as living “a great distance from where ships come for trading”, but convenient to the Blackwater and Nottaway. John Sellers was listed as a debtor to the estate or Francis Parker, which was inventoried in Bertie County in 1737.

William DUKE

William Duke was born about 1701 and married firstly Thamar --- about 1720 and secondly Elizabeth ---, the widow of John Bartholomew, about 1736.  The name Thamar became a common name used in the Duke family by his descendants.  He made his first appearance as a landholder on the Meherrin River in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1727 (Map A Number 18, Map B Number 12).  Shortly thereafter, he relocated a little west to Brunswick County and became a landholder there.  In Brunswick County, he served on juries and helped with the construction and maintenance of roads near his house.  Sometime about 1745, he relocated to the Fishing Creek region along with several of his sons.  He bought and sold several pieces of property in North Carolina.  It is not clear whether he or his son William was an undersheriff in Granville County about 1748.  By June 1759, he was referred to as an “ancient and infirmed” man.  He probably died shortly after 1765 http://www.lofthouse.com/warren/history/davisduke.htm

1740: Feb: Matthew Sellers’s son Benjamin Sellars had moved to Edgecombe County by the February, 1740, session of the Bertie County court, as is indicated by a deed from “Benjamin Sellers of Edgecombe County” to Benjamin Hill, selling 50 acres of land on the south side of the “Meherin River” and Kirby Creek that “my father Matthew Sellers bought of Benjamin Foreman whereon my mother now lives and the other 50 acres which my father bought of John Mohere and also 170 acres patented in my father’s names (sic) all the said lands joining together.” Witnesses were John Campbell, Christopher Lahey, and Samuel Mirret (F/195). The deed is not dated. It seems safe to conclude from the language of this document that Matthew Sellers was dead by the time of the February court; thus, he died sometime between July, 1739, and February, 1740.

RESEARCH NOTES: Of Barbara Schenk: she desecends from David Johnson son of Joseph Johnson son of Michael died 1718, she advised David Johnson was born 1730-1740: He appears to be married twice unknown who the first wife, who he had three children with Morris 1762 Joshua 1766-1770 and Mary abt 1755: His second wife was Rachel, who he had Sarah, Hester, Charity, Samuel, Anny and Frances. b 1782 Her David Johnson goes in and out of tax records in Lunenburg Co and once turns up in Hailfax Co.:

David Johnson owned land on Crupper Run Lunenburg CO. Va. he bought the land from Josiah Shipp land is by Coxes Estes and Chandlers and not far from his father Joseph Johnson. Cruppers run seems to be West of the Middle Fork of the Meherrin River, which was called Robertsons Fork.

This David Johnson left Va about 1787 and is in Edgefield District of SC where he died in 1797. Rachel died 1798. His son Morris seems to have came to Edgefield by the time his father died, Joshua also followed his father , unknown when into Edgefield District of SC. all where there in early 1800's.

Wife: Ann

Son: John Woos, negro James, another at wife’s death

Daughter: Sally Jordan and her husband William Jordan

Son: David Wood

Daughter: Patty Wood

Son: Johnson Wood

Son: George Wood

"But if either of my six children are without lawful heirs of their body then the part so given them in my will I desire to be equally divided between my surviving children."

Witnesses: Sylv. Walker and Martin Elliott

Executors: Wife, Ann Wood, son, David Wood

Source: Virginia Wood Eisen, Ph.D., a proven descendant of Stephen and Ann Johnson Wood, provided me with notes and the will of Stephen Wood. She has documented with land records, wills, etc. that Stephen and Ann’s son, John, married Susannah/Susan and moved from Lunenburg County, Virginia to Williamson County, Tennessee where he died and left his will naming wife Susan and ten children: sons, Christopher, Josiah, John, Drury, Johnson, and daughters, Elizabeth Almond, Sally Jordan deceased, and Nancy Boyd.

John Wood, son of Stephen Wood and Ann Johnson was probably the first born since he is the first child named in his father’s will in 1782. He was listed as a tithe under his father’s name in 1769 tax list in Lunenburg County, Va and therefore must have been at least 16 and thus born by 1752 (his sister, Sally, was born in 1753). The records show that John was married to Susannah __?__. In 1780, John and Susannah deeded land in Lunenburg to John Hankins; in 1781 to Jesse Crenshaw; in 1796 to John’s brother, Johnson Wood, and in 1802 to George Wood (probably son of John’s brother, David).

Sometime between 1802 and 1804, John moved to Williamson County, TN and first appears in the 1804 tax list. A John Wood, possibly the same, received a pass from the Indian Agent at Southwest Point (now Kingston, TN) sometime between July 29, 1801 and October 28, 1804. These passes were issued to travelers desiring to go through, settle in or trade in the Cherokee Country. (See Cherokee Agency Pass Book 1801-1804, reported in "Anasearchin’ News" (54-1959 Vol 1-6, pg. 121) John’s sister, Sally, and her husband, William Jordan, had earlier moved to Williamson County by 1800 (tax list) and his brother, Johnson Wood, was in Williamson by 1804 (tax list).

Sally and William Jordan were members of the Wilson Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Williamson Co. as early as 1804 when it was formed. Johnson and his family were also active members of this church. The church records on 19 April 1817 have an interesting entry viz. "Brother Johnson Wood rose and stated the circumstances relevant to the dispute between Mr. John Wood and his son, Christopher, in as much as the son were treating his father very ill he being his brother could not bear to see the son throw his father down and gave him some blows. He acknowledged his sorrow for the misfortune and were acquitted."

(Note: proof of relationships is sometimes found in unexpected places!)

Apparently, John returned to Lunenburg Co., Va. In 1813 for at least a temporary period. On 24 March 1813 in Williamson Co., TN, Conrad Richardson appointed Josiah Johnson of said county his attorney in the sale of 85 acres on the head waters of the Meherrin Creek in Charlotte, Va. To John Wood of Williamson County. The sale was made 13 May 1813 at which time John Wood was described as being in Lunenburg Co., Va. John appeared in court in Lunenburg at this time for in Deed Book 23, p. 81, it is recorded that "John Wood appeared in court to give the names and ages of 7 slaves he brought from Tennessee into Virginia in April, 1813." He swore before a Justice of the Peace that "he did not bring them for the purpose of sale or with any intent to evade the laws of the Commonwealth." The slaves were Tiller, a woman aged 35, Chaney, female aged 18 years, Frederick, a boy between 10 and 11, Ritter, a girl 7 years of age, Hannah aged 7, Julius, a boy 1 ½ years and Bartlett, a boy 6 months. (Note: Tiller, Frederick, and Ritter were listed in the inventory of John’s estate in Tennessee in 1821.)

John’s will was written 27 June 1821 and probated at the October court 1821 (Williamson County, TN Will Book3, p. 264-266). He named his wife, Susan, and his ten children in the following order: Christopher, Elizabeth, Josiah, John, Sarah, Nancy, Drury, Johnson, (ancestor of Virginia Wood Eisen), Fanny, Kesiah. It seems likely that "Johnson" was derived from John’s grandfather, Joseph Johnson. The name Johnson Wood appeared frequently in the Tennessee descendants of Stephen Wood and Ann Johnson (daughter of Joseph Johnson). From: Judith Prince
