Eliza and Charles

Mr and Mrs Jones-d'Ernée;

as they were soon to be known

***You are now 5 generations before the current children***

Charles Moore Jones (-d'Ernee to be)

These portraits were done just prior to the marriage of Eliza Newcombe to Charles Moore Jones on 11th August 1860 in the Union Chapel, Islington according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Congregationalists.

Eliza Newcombe

Eliza and Charles were both 23 at the time.
On the Certificate of Marriage, Eliza's address is given as 27 Wilton Street, Liverpool.
Charles resided at 1 Thebeston Street, Islington.

The union of a tanner's son and a butcher's daughter seems entirely appropriate, following class distinctions of the era. Speculation by Michael Mates proposes that their union possibly originated from the alliance of the respective fathers' businesses. John Jones was a tanner and Frederick Newcombe a carcase butcher. The Islington Directory, 1852, lists the occupants of 1 Theberton Street as W Jones, boot and shoe maker and F Newcombe, ham and beef shop.

It is from this generation that today's (millennium) adults are all descended - the common link amongst three (so far) who have contributed much of this information - Michael Mates, Jillian Trethewey and Geoff Dernee (and their relatives).

Other information you may have would be welcomed by Geoff, who will get around to including it, assuming your permission to do so.
