John and Elizabeth Walker Jones

Colonel John Jones
(abt. 1710 - abt. 1785)

John Jones was probably born in Henrico or New Kent County, Virginia.  He resided in Buckingham County which explain the lack of a will and the absence of other records.  What little we do know of him comes from the Prince Edward District Court records and the writings of his great grandson, John Jay Johns.  We know that he had brothers William, who was about eight years younger and Thomas, that was younger still.  There were no doubt more siblings.

John married Elizabeth Walker, probable daughter of Joel and Sarah Walker of Goochland County.  We estimate their marriage date as about 1743, as their son William was born the following year.  John Jay Johns writes of his great grandfather in 1880 - "He was blind for many years.  They had six sons & 3 daughters - One of these sons, Joel Jones was my grandfather - Great Grand mother Jones was a Walker & lived  to be 100 years old.  Grandmother Jones was a Sally Patric. Grandfather Jones, as they all were very powerful - powerfull - athletic brave men."

Elizabeth Walker
(abt. 1725 - abt 1780)

Elizabeth Walker was probably born in New Kent or Goochland County.  We suspect she was the daughter of Joel and Sarah Walker who removed from perhaps New Kent County to Buckingham County, Virginia.

From the journal of John Jay Johns we find that Elizabeth Walker Jones was regarded as a "highly educated and very smart woman."  This would have been quite unusual for the times.  While women of the upper class were usually educated in the basics, the emphasis remained on instruction in running the plantation households.   It is obvious however, that Elizabeth's attributes wielded great influence over her children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren who went on to become Governor's, physicians, planters and patriots.  In a article in the Kentucky Explorer regarding her brother, Asaph Walker, she is mentioned -
"..... Elizabeth, married Col. John Jones, of Buckingham County.  She became the ancestress of the people who made the names of Jones, Winston and Pettus
famous in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi."
