Charles Betts Holcombe was named for his father and given his grandmother's surname for his middle name.  The son of a poor Methodist minister, he worked his way through dental school, first going to Harvard, and then when he could no longer afford it, transferred to the University of Minnesota where he enrolled as a state resident.  He played semi-pro basketball to supplement his meager income.

Dr. Holcombe practiced dentistry in Fayetteville NY for 50 years.  He loved his summer home on the St. Lawrence River and  was greatly loved by his many, many patients.
