34. Leon Stanchfield Prochnow JACKSON (Anna Leona JACKSON , Anna Mary ARMSTRONG , Adam Clark , Jabin ) was born 1 on Apr 16 1923 in Vanburen, Onondaga Co., NY. He died 2 on Jun 28 1998 in St. Charles Mercy Hospital, Oregon, Lucas Co., OH and was buried 3 on Jul 2 1998 in Bedford Memorial Cemetery, Bedford Twp., Monroe Co., MI.
Leon was raised by his maternal grandparents, Charles H. and Anna (ARMSTRONG) JACKSON, from the age of 4 until he was 13. His parents had, seperately, left the children. Charles H. JACKSON died in 1935. At that time there was a custody battle between his biological mother and his grandmother. The judge was going to send him, and his sisters, to live with their biological mother. The children did not want to leave their grandmother, Ma, the only mother they knew. When Leon was told by the judge of his decision, Leon said "You can make us go but you can't make us stay." The judge said they could go with their biological mother or to the county children's home. The children went to the home.
At the age of sixteen, Leon was forced to leave the children's home. He was fortunate that a friend let him stay in their home in Jordan, NY, so he could finish high school. He signed up for the U.S. Marines after graduating in June 1941.Leon served in the U.S. Marine Corps, as a private from December 9, 1941 until December 21, 1945. His service was in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was recalled on October 9, 1950 and stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was promoted to corporal during this time and was given a hardship discharge June 20, 1951.
