The Family of Obediah Childress (1846-1936)
Grandson of Obediah Childress, Sr.
Obediah Childress, Sr. > son John Childress (1822-1859) > grandson Obediah Childress

The following photos were furnished to me by a descendant of Obediah Childress, Royce Lynne (Long) Larson (born 1943).  Royce Lynne was a big help to me in putting together many obscure items associated with our Childress history.

At last count of the 4,600+ entries in the Childress/Mathis Family Tree, there were six Childress males with the given name of "Obediah."  It would be an interesting exercise to trace the origin of the name.  The Obediah Childress (1846-1936) shown above, middle is the son of John Childress (1822-1859) and the grandson of Obediah, Sr.  He lived in East Texas most of his life and raised two large families born to his two wives, sisters Missouri and Georgianna Baskin.  The second of his two families is shown above in the left photo: (back row, left to right) Zeffie (b. 1885), Effie (b. 1888), Obediah, Grady (b. 1894) and Obedia (b. 1887); on the front row are the two twins, Maud and Claud, born 1892.  In the photograph on the right, second wife Georgianna Matilda Baskin (b. 1852) is shown with their children Effie, Maud and Zeffie.

The photographs above are the same children as adults.  Obedia (1887-1934) is shown on the left in his cowboy outfit; Effie Lota (1888-1970) is in the middle and her older sister Zeffie May (1885-1969) is on the right.  Interestingly, of Obediah's second batch of children by Georgianna Baskin, only Grady married and had a family.  The other five siblings either died at an early age (the twins died at the age of fifteen of malaria and dysentery), or lived the balance of their lives unmarried.

The photograph above features four generations of a Childress family.  The gentleman in the chair is Grady Childress (1894-1978).  Grady is shown holding his great granddaughter, Robyn Renee Larson (b. 1977).  Standing on the left is Grady's daughter, Margaret Virginia (Childress) Long (1916-1995) and on the right is her irrepressible daughter, Royce Lynne (Long) Larson (b. 1943).
