First Generation

1. Andrew LINN Sr 1, 2 was born about 1700 in Ulster, Northern Ireland. He died about 1800 in Green River, Barren, KY.

In the mid 1800's a grandson of Andrew Lynn gave a lengthy interview to the American historian, Lyman C. Draper. This interview contains the bulk of the recorded personal genealogical data that exists for the Lynn family in the colonial era of America.
According to his grandson, Andrew Lynn was brought to America in the year 1700 or 1701 as a " babe - in - arms ". His parent's names are unknown, but the Lynn family in Ulster Ireland was obviously of substantial financial means to be able to afford passage to America. There were only a handful of Irish immigrants who came to America before 1718.
The Surname Lynn springs from a derivation of the Scottish Gaelic word for waterfall. There are a number of spelling variations of the Surname including, Linn, Linne, Linnhe, Lin, Lenne, Len, and Line . Andrew Lynn and most of his descendents were literate and spelled their Surname as either Lynn or Linn.
In Scotland, the Lynn's were a Clan and shared lands with the Clan Boyd. Their homeland was about 30 miles West-Southwest of Glasgow Scotland near the present day Dalry on the river Caaf. (Byron A. Parham Ph.D, FSA (Scotland) as quoted in article in the Lynn/Linn Lineage Quarterly Volume 12, No. 1)
The Lynn's had no tartan of their own, but were allowed by Royal decree to wear the tartan of the Clan Boyd, the Boyd tartan being a variant of the Royal Stuart tartan.
Andrew Lynn first settled with his family in Northwestern New Jersey on the Musconetcong river. He moved to Fayette county Pennsylvania in the mid 1760's and purchased land there from the Indians.
He spent his final days in Western Kentucky in the Green River region. Except for her Surname, nothing is known of Andew Lynn's wife.
