Ancestry & Marriage
Nothing is known of Edward
Bennett's history prior to his 1886 marriage at Cootamundra
when his occupation was recorded as labourer. His 1886 marriage
registration record did not have his father or mother's name
or his father's occupation. However his 1943 death registration
whilst not recording his mother's name, indicating it was
unknown to the informant, had his father's name as Edward. The electoral rolls listed him as from at least 1936 residing with his first born daughter Agnes at 24 View Street in Woollahra in Sydney and thereafter until his death with her at at 111, Adelaide Street in Woollahra fronting Cooper Park. His death registration had his status as pensioner and "contractor" as his prior occupation and birth place as Parramatta. Parramatta was also given as his birth place in the sighted 1893 birth registration of son Albert Ernest that seven years after the marriage had Edward's then occupation as a "carter". The marriage registration record did not record the age of either party. His age in the death record and in the birth record of his last born child indicated he was born before the official registration of births began in NSW on 1 March 1856. If his belief that he was born at Parramatta was correct it may be that no identifable birth record is available today because he was not baptised, the parish register record is unreadable, or the register has not survived 3. The birth of Edward Bennett's wife Johanna McGann who died aged about 48 years at Cootamundra in 1913 was registered in 1865 at Yass in NSW. She was the sixth born of thirteen children of Patrick McGann (ca. 1823-1904) and his second wife Johanna Scanlan (ca. 1829-1886) who married in Dec 1854 after respectively arriving in Sydney in 1854 and 1853 - he from County Tipperary and her from County Limerick. Their history and descendants are detailed on a web page titled the Descendants of Patrick McGann. By 1859 the couple were in the Yass district of NSW where that year Patrick purchased land in the Parish of Bowning where the last of their thirteen children was born in 1874. The next year they would have moved to the Cootamundra district where that year he selected a 100 acre farm portion in the Parish of Cunjegong (sic) situated about 15 kilometers north of Cootamundra that he subsequently added to with further purchases. The marriage registration and birth registrations for the first three of Johanna's five children had her given name as Annie and the last two her baptised name of Johanna. A likely explanation for the difference in the recorded given name is that when her mother Johanna née Scanlan who died in 1886 was alive Johanna must have been known in the family and community as "Annie" to differentiate her from her mother. A week after the death of Johanna Bennett an advertisement in the Cootamundra Herald of 29 April 1913 for an auction on 5 May 1913 of the furnishings and effects of the Bennett house in Cooper street indicates the family would have left Cootamundra at that time 6. The departure so soon after Johanna's death may explain why there is no headstone in the local cemetery as her grave would not have had time to settle before the departure. Children of Edward Bennett and Johanna McGann were: Second Generation
1. Agnes Maude Bennett was
born in 1886 (#21960/1886) reg. Cootamunda, NSW,
Australia and died aged 98 on 15 Sep 1984 (#20595/1984).
She married in 1909 (#9683/1909) reg. Woollahra,
Edward Martin Hoffman born ca. 1889 ; died
7 Apr 1940 (#9610/1940) reg. Waverley, buried Catholic Section
of Waverley Cemetery, son of Martin Hoffman and Mary Josephine. The electoral rolls recorded her husband Edward was a grocer. The Sydney Morning Herald of 18 Sep 1984 carried her death notice and the same paper that for her husband on 8 Apr 1940 9. Under the heading of MAN'S DEATH AT CHURCH the latter also carried the following as a news item - Edward Martin Hoffman, 61, of View Street, Woollahra, collapsed and died as he was leaving Holy Cross Church, Adelaide Street, Woollahra, yesterday morning. A doctor, who had also been attending the church, certified that death was due to natural causes. The funeral notice in same paper stated the funeral service was to be on 8 April at Holy Cross Church, Bondi Junction leaving for the burial in the Catholic Section of Waverly Cemetery.2. Annie Theresa Bennett "Teresa", born 1887 (#22562/1887) reg. Cootamundra, NSW, Australia ; died 11 Jun 1957 (#24036/1957) reg. Young, NSW, buried Young Cemetery. She married 1917 (#12512/1917) reg. St Leonards, John Edwin B Clarke, born ca. 1889 ; died 1 Feb 1967, aged 78. Headstone in Young Cemetery They resided in Young in NSW. The Commonwealth electoral rolls recorded the occupation of her husband John as a bricklayer. Until 1961 no children were listed in the then at 21 Dundas Street in Young household. That year with widower John Edwin two children were listed - Patricia May a nurse and Eunice Alexis "Una" a clerk. Patricia May married Clarence Rhodes in 1963 (#1963-4814) and left the household. After John Irwin's 1967 death Una remained at the address until 1975. She died unmaried in 1982 (#1982-2197). Another child was Mary Rosarii who died unmarried in Young in 1971 (#1971-72108). It is possible there were other children who left the household before they enrolled to vote. Any others who survived Annie would have been recorded in her death registration and if survinging him a decade later in that of John Edwin.3. Edward Percy Bennett "Ben", born 1889 (#21930/1889) reg. Cootamundra, NSW, Australia ; died 12 Apr 1968 (#24367/1968) reg. Parramatta, NSW, buried Pine Grove Memorial Park, Eastern Creek. He married 1921 (#1086/1921) reg. In the late 1930s he was the postmaster at Fairfield in Sydney and by late 1940 the same at Leeton where he remained until May 1944 after which he was at Gosford and by September 1846 back in Sydney as the postmaster at Balgowlah (Manly). He married in 1942 (#16851/1942) reg. Redfern, NSW, Gwendoline Marie Erickson. His second given name was recorded as "Francis" in his marriage registration and in all listings in the electoral rolls. In the annual telephone directories from 1960 to his death he was listed as "Des F" at 25 Park Road in Burwood. Confirming during his life he regarded his second given name as Francis, that after his death was recorded as Vincent by the informant for the death registration, is the bestowal on his eldest son of Francis as a second given name. By occupation he was a chemist.SOURCES: 1 Edward Bennett's birth year of ca. 1855 is based on the age of 38 and Parramatta as his birthplace as given in the 1893 birth registration of youngest son Albert Ernest by his informant wife Johanna. His father's name as having been Edward is based on Edward's 1943 death registration record that also had his birthplace as Parramatta. The place and date of marriage are as per the 1886 registration. Transcripts of the marriage and death registrtions and of the 1893 birth of son Albert Ernest were obtained and provided courtesy of Edward and Johanna descendant David Bennett of Queensland. NOTE in respect of the ca. 1855 birth year of Edward there are conflicting birth years being - ca. 1854 calculated from an age of 89 given in his 1943 death registration, ca. 1852 from 91 in his newspaper death notice and ca. 1851 from 92 in a newspaper report of the attendance at his death bed of son Albert Ernest then Postmaster at Leeton. In the absence of a first person record 1855 is preferred as is derived from the earliest record sighted being that for the birth of the youngest child which did correctly state as 28 years the 1865 birth year of the registration informant wife Johanna. There are no NSW BDM indexed Edward Bennett births with a father named Edward anywhere in the colony during the decade 1850 to 1860. The closest to that decade being that of an Edward Bennett baptism in 1849 (V1849-2580-34A) with parents named William and Elizabeth. The only Edward Bennett marriage in the colony of NSW between 1840 and 1860 was that in 1849 of an Edward Bennett to an Ellen Duncomb (V1849-486-79) in Scots Church in Sydney (Presbyterian). No children births for the couple are NSW BDM indexed to 1870. It is possible Edward was related to other early Bennett families in the Cootamundra area. A John and Sarah Bennett had a Frederick born at Cootamundra in 1882. John could have been a brother of the Edward who maried Johanna. 2 Cootamundra Herald, Friday 25 April 1913, page 2, Return Thanks - Mr. E. Bennett and family wish to return their heartfelt thanks to their kind friends for kindness and expressions of sympathy in their late bereavement. 3 The names of Edward's parents did not appear in his 1886 marriage registration record. At the time of this compilation his father's name as having been Edward is soley derived from the death registration which did not have his mother's name presumably because it was unknown to the informant. Agnes and Annie were the names of the first born two daughters suggesting his mother's maiden given name may have been one or the other. Philip Hurley was a 1886 marriage witnesses but was apparently was not related by marriage to either the bride or groom. He would have been the Philip Hurley who in 1883 (#4907/1883) married Ellen M Hawkins at Cootamundra. She was perhaps Ellen M Hawkins born at Richmond in 1865 to parents Joseph and Susan Hawkins who were likely Joseph Hawkins and Susan Wilson who married in 1857 at Windsor. In the early years there were other Bennetts' in the Cootamundra area who may have been related to Edward - perhaps children of a brother? In the 19 years from 1869 to 1888 there are 15 Edward Bennett NSW indexed deaths of whom almost any could have Edward's father Edward. In respect of same surviving children's names if known to the informant should appear in the record. 4 Images of Johanna Bennett née McGann provided courtesy of long-time McGann/Scanlon/Canty family researcher Mary Ozinga. 5 A downloadable map of Botany Cemetery is at: http://www.esmp.net.au/search-map-facility.aspx and http://www.esmp.net.au/media/8179/MAP-FIT-A5.pdf RC 3 is very near the car entry and parking area and bus stop off Military Road near Morrison Way. 6 Cootamundra Herald 29 April 1913.
