Descendants of John Latham 1854-1932Family Genealogy
John Latham's father Christopher, a
son of Thomas Latham and Sarah Picken, was christened in
St Thomas parish in Dudley in County Worcestershire in England
on 16 Mar 1817. The large town of Dudley now in County
Stafforshire is located 17 km North-west of Birmingham.
At the 1851 and 1861 census Christopher's occupation was
recorded as Glass Cutter. On 21 Jun 1840 he married in
Sedgley in Staffordshire where she was born ca.
1819 Betsy Martin a daughter of John Martin.
His death was registered with age
recorded as 56 in the Dudley district in Dec Quarter
1874 1. John's Marriage
John Latham was christened on 27 Aug 1854 in St. Thomas' in
Dudley in Worcester with his parents recorded in the register as
Christopher and Betsy and the birth was registered in the Dudley
District in June Quarter 1854 (Vol 6c age 105). That his age
was given as 27 in the 1881 census suggests a birth between
1 April and 3 April 1854. Calculating to a same birth date
was his age given as 78 at death on 26 Apr 1932. The birth
of wife Alice Matilda Guest was registered in the
Dudley district in March Quarter 1851 (Vol 18 page 286). They
married in Dudley on 21 Oct 1877 with John's father's name
recorded as Christopher and mother Alice Matilda's as Thomas
Guest and the marriage was registered in the Dudley district
in Dec. Quarter 1877 (Vol 6c page 26) 1. Emigration to AustraliaJohn Latham and family emigrated to Australia in 1886. They arrived in Sydney on the steamship Port Victor that left London on 18 May 1886 and arrived in Port Jackson on Thursday 8 July 1886 bringing 644 government immigrants. At arrival as listed in the passenger list the family comprised John aged 32 a Brassworker, Alice 35, Edith A. 7, Arthur C. 6, John E. 2, and Ernest an infant, with their religion given as Wesleyan and native place as Worcestershire. After docking at Neutral Bay early the following morning the ship was visited before noon by the Governor of the colony Lord Carrington and his wife with as they boarded the ship's band playing the National Anthem. After inspecting it and, the extensive damage caused mostly during 48 hours of wild weather and mountainous seas encountered after passing the Cape of Good Hope, the Governor addressed the immigrants welcoming them to their new life in Australia. It was said in addition to strong arms and legs each brought about £2000 to start that new life 2. Deaths
John Latham was listed in the 1930 and 1932
Commonwealth Electoral Rolls in the Five Dock
subdivision of the Martin electorate and wife Alice
Matilda same in the 1930 and 1933 rolls. He died at
his residence in Henry Street in Five
Dock in Sydney in New South Wales on 26 April 1932 at the
age of 78 years. Two days after his death an OBITUARY
in the Sydney Morning Herald stated he had resided in
Sydney for 46 years where he founded the firm of J. Latham
and sons, brass finishers and electro-platers, from
which ill-health compelled him to retire about eight
years ago and that he was survived by his wife, four sons,
and a daughter. The Children
Of the five John Latham and Alice Matilda Guest
children the first four were born in England from
1880 to 1886 and the last in 1890 after arrival in
Sydney. All survived their parents. They were: SECOND
GENERATION
1. Edith Alice Latham
"Eadie" b. 1879 Dudley, Worcestershire, England ; d. 10 Sep
1944 (#1944-16392) Sydney, NSW Australia, reg. Drummoyne.
At the 1881 census of England & Wales she was not
listed in her parents household in Dudley but as a
niece aged 2 years in the household of William and
Ellen Harper who at the time had no children of
their own.
She married 1922 (#1922-0638) reg. Burwood Methodist minister Rev. Granville Oscar Cocks who died 26 Dec 1938. There were no issue. Her death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald had that she was late of Fivedock and was buried in the Methodist Cemetery, Rookwood and was the sister of - Arthur, Edwin, William and Sydney 6. Her 1940 made WILL named her four siblings the same excepting for "William" who was was named as Ernest indicating whilst known as William he had not changed his name by deed poll so was just Ernest legally in accord with his 1886 England birth registration and the 1886 S.S. Port Victor passenger list in which he was recorded only as Ernest "an infant" - i.e. less than 12 months old. 2. Arthur Christopher Latham b. 1880 Dudley, County Staffordshire, registered Sep. Quarter 1880 (Vol 6 Page 98) in the Dudley District that spanned the counties of Staffordshire and Worcestershire. He was listed aged zero in his parents household at the 1881 England and Wales census and died aged 93 on 9 Apr 1974 (#1974-2275) survived by four children 8. His marriage to Elsie Maud Lane is indexed as #1902-8938 reg. Burwood. She died in 1965 (#1965-34388) reg. Balmain with her parent names indexed as William and Elizabeth Ann (no newspaper death notice). According to the 1940 made will of Arthur's elder sister Edith Alice Cocks, of which Arthur was one of the executors, Edith owned numbers 67 and 69 in Henry Street in Five Dock, and Arthur then resided in the same street at 61. From 1930 to his wife's 1965 death Arthur C. and his wife were listed at Five Dock in the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls and after her death listed there to at least 1968 9. Note as with the other John Latham and Alice Matilda Guest grandchildren there may have been more than the below listed FOUR Arthur Christopher and Elsie Maud Lane children born after 1918 and living after at the time of this compilation death index 1988 year cut-off, identifiable from their parents death registrations and also from the electoral rolls (not consulted) who were residing in their parents household after from age 21 having enrolled to vote. Children of Arthur Christopher Latham and Elsie Maud Lane were:3. John Edwin Latham b. 1884 Dudley, Worcestershire, England. His birth was registered in England in the Dudley district in June Quarter 1884. At arrival in Sydney in 1886 he was listed as John E. in the SS Port Victor passenger list. His mother Alice Matilda's 1934 newspaper death notice had him as Mr. Ted Latham. He died on 15 June 1958 (#1958-23594) registered at Gosford near Ettalong Beach with parents listed as John and Alice and a notice in the Sydney Morning Herald of 16 Jun 1958 had him as being of 103, The Esplanade, Ettalong and formerly of Eastwood with the funeral to take place the following day at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. His elder sister Edith's 1940 made will had his then address as Gordon Street in Eastwood and when his wife died in August 1947 it was given as 27, Gordon Street in Eastwood. His father's will left a cottage he owned at Ettalong to John in joint ownership with his brother Sydney Thomas and a block of land (lot 140) there in Beach Street to their sister Edith Alice. As per the marriage registrations he married in 1909 (#1909-4287) reg. Burwood, Caroline B C Betts who died 19 Aug 1847 (#1947-15195) registered Ryde as Bertha Caroline Cleal Latham, daughter of Samuel and Julia Betts. A brief death notice for her in the Sydney Morning Herald of 20 Aug 1947 named a daughter Ilma 10. However no NSW children births from 1909 to 1918 have been identified in the birth indexes with a John Latham as the father nor has a NSW marriage or death for a daugher named Ilma. Ilma was seemingly his adopted daughter who was named as Mrs Leslie Slater of Molong in NSW in the Dec 1940 made will of John's sister Edith Alice Cocks 7. The marriage of Leslie Slater to Phylis Edna May Foster was registered at Forbes in 1928 (#1928-"16970) and from 1935 to 1937 Leslie Slater and Phylis Edna May Slater were listed in Molong in the Calare electorate. No marriage was identified of a Leslie Slater to anyone with a given name of anything like Ilma. That John and Bertha Betts adopted a daughter suggests they had no children of their own and no births are indexed to 1918. After the death of wife Betha he apparently remarried. At the time of compilation in Jan 2019 two submitted family trees at Ancestry.com (only tree index entries sighted) had 1884 Stafforshire, England born John Edwin "Ted" Latham as having married 1895 Queensland born Rosie (Rose) Hopkins. The birth of a Rosie Hoskins on 24 Oct 1895 to parents John and Mary Jane Stancombe was registered in QLD in 1895. No NSW marriage to 1968 is indexed and no QLD marriage for her was registered to the curent in 2019 QLD index 1944 cut-off year. As first wife Bertha/Caroline née Betts died on 19 Aug 1847 indicated is John Edwin remarried Rose Hoskins in Queensland. The Commonwealth Electoral Rolls, held on fische by State Libraries etc., for the Ryde and Eastwood areas etc. should would who was with him at his various addresses at different times. In the electoral rolls John Edwin Latham is indexed from 1933 to 1943 in the Eastwood subdivision of the Parramatta electorate, in 1949 in Bradfield, 1954 Robertson and in 1958 in St George. His first wife Bertha Cleal Latham was in the Parramatta electorate in 1930 and as Bertha Caroline in Parramatta from 1933 to 1843. Thereafter tracking John Edwin in the electorates Rose Latham was in Bradfield in 1949, Robertson in 1954, and St George in 1958. No NSW death registration is indexed to 1988 for a Rose Latham or a NSW newspaper death notice. A Margaret Rose Latham death at Eastwood was registered in 1977 with no parent names given who was perhaps aged 61, and the SMH of 10 Oct 1977 carried a death notice for her (unsighted) and on 11 Oct a funeral notice for a Mass (also sighted) that had her as late of West Ryde. Indicating is she was not Rose Latham is that Margaret Rose Latham is indexed in the 1847 electoral rolls in the Lawson eletorate and Rose Latham in Bradfield, and in the 1954 when John Edwin and same year Rose Latham were listed in the Robertson electorate Margaret Rose was in the Parramatta electorate. 4. Ernest Latham aka William, b. 1886 Dudley, Worcestershire, England with his birth registered in the Dudley District in June Quarter 1886 (Vol 6C page 112) so born after March 1886. He was recorded as "Ernest" in the passenger list when he arrived in Sydney in July 1886 as an infant. He must have been no more than a few weeks old at the May departure of the SS Port Victor from London. He was lucky to make it as as an infant of a similar age died on the voyage. He was seemingly the Ernest William Latham, apparently known at least to his family as William, who died in early Aug 1958 reg. at Burwood and was buried in the Methodist Section of Rookwood Cemetery with his parents names recorded in the death registration as John and Alice Lillian. There was an Ernest William Latham aged 71 funeral notice in the Sydney Morning Herald of 4 Aug 1958 but it had no details (it is not known if there was a death notice with family details). As he was born in June Quarter 1886 by August 1958 he would have been aged 72. That in later years he was also known as "William" is apparent from that being his given as one of the three surviving brothers of his sister Edith Alice Cocks in her 1944 newspaper death notice. Edith's 1840 made will had his then address as 1A, Girella Street, Burwood. In the electoral rolls he is indexed only as Ernest from 1930 to 1933 in the Martin eletorate, 1934 to 1943 in Parkes, and perhaps in 1949 in Evans. Son Ernest Roy in 1930 was also in Martin and in Parkes from 1934 to 1947 and then in Lowe from 1958 to 1963. Ernest married in 1905 (#1905-146) reg. Sydney Ettie Ann Bartlett. (aka Hettie). She was perhaps the Ettie Latham aged 86 (so born ca. 1898) whose death was registered at Toukley near Newcastle in 1984 (#1984-107207) who was apparently buried in Parmdale Lawn Cemetery at Parmdale on the NSW Central Coast 15 kilometers north of Gosford with no parent names listed and for whom no newspaper death notice has been identified. It has been said Ernest divorced his first wife 11. That has not been confirmed in the records as at compilation the NSW Supreme Court Divorce indexes ended at 1923. By then no divorce is indexed so if such was the case was after then. The only possible NSW indexed second marriage for Ernest Latham was that of a "William" Latham in 1937 to Ruby Florence May Spicer registered at Burwood. Of Penshurst when she died on 8 Oct 1993 she was buried in the Woronora Lawn Cemetery in Sutherland Shire. Less likely, except in name, was a Ruby May Latham of Bainsdale and formerly of Yarra Glen who died in Nov 2000. Children of Ernest Latham and Ettie A Bartlett to 1918 were:5. Sydney Thomas Latham b. 1890 (#1890-12600) in Sydney, NSW, Australia reg. Five Dock. He died in 1960 (#1960-2056) death registered at Burwood with parents names recorded as John Edward and Alice Matilda. His death notice (full notice not sighted) in the Sydney Morning Herald of 10 March 1960 had he was late of Eastwood. There is no other evidence whatsoever in any record to suggest his father John had a second given name of "Edward" so is considered not correct. He married in 1915 (#1915-9758) reg. Drummoyne, Annie Louisa Betts Meredith. To the end of 1918 the birth of one child Sydney N. was registered in 1916 (#1916-25170). The electoral rolls from 1837 would likely disclose more. In 1944 when sister Edith Alice Cocks died he resided in Edgar Street in Burwood. A child of Sydney Thomas Latam and Annie Louisa Betts Meredith was: THIRD

Three possible marriages are indexed viz: 1926 Robert C to Millicent M Fizzell reg. Burwood, 1938 Robert Charles to Lavena Mary Seton reg. Liverpool and 1940 Robert Charles to Gladys Rebecca Simpson reg. Lismore. 11. Ernest Roy Latham, b. 1909 (#1909-23500) reg. Burwood ; d. 29 Nov 1963 (1963-35900) reg. Burwood, parents indexed as Ernest and Ettie Ann (death notice in SMH of 2 Dec 1963 had he was of Concord). He likely married in 1935 (#1935-3218) reg. Burwood, Stella M Tempest. The 1940 will of his father's sister Edith Alice Cocks mentioned Ernest Roy was then of Burwood Road, Concord. 12. Edith Lillian Alice Latham, b. 1910 (#36706) reg.
