Descendants of Matilda O’Hara

Descendants of Matilda O’Hara

Matilda O’Hara was born ca. 1834 1 in County Cavan, Ireland and died 11 Jul 1914 2 in Redfern, NSW, Australia. She married on 9 Aug 1854 3 in Scots (Presbyterian) Church, Pitt Street, Sydney, NSW, Andrew Love, born ca. 1831 3, 4 in County Cavan, Ireland and died 5 Jul 1906 3, 4 in Sydney, NSW, son of James and Eliza Love.

Matilda O’Hara likely emigrated to Australia in the early 1850s. No record of her arrival in Sydney has been found in the assisted immigration records. It is assumed she came unassisted in company with her elder sister Mary who in 1852 married Hugh Wauhop - a widower and landowner in the Strawberry Hills locality of Surry Hills 5. They were the witnesses at Matilda's 1854 wedding to Andrew Love that took place in the same church in which they had married 3.
Matilda's husband Andrew was also a native of County Cavan and, as he was a witness at their 1852 wedding, must have formed a close association with the Wauhops' and was perhaps employed by Hugh. He arrived in Sydney at the age of nineteen years from Cavan in Co. Cavan on 29 Jun 1850 on the Lloyds. Because Co. Cavan has no parish named Cavan his prior place of residence would have been the main town of that name. The immigration record stated his father James had emigrated to America 7. The absence in that record of his mother's abode indicates she was deceased. A ship's list recording of the arrival of his father James Love in the USA has not been positively identified. He was possibly the James Love who arrived in New York from Liverpool, England on 22 May 1849 on the William D. Sewall 8.
The first listing of Andrew Love noted in Sydney directories in the Strawberry Hill area was in the Sydney Sands Directory for 1867 when he was residing at 18 Wilton Lane just around the corner from Sarah Ann Street. In 1871 he was at 39 Sarah Ann Street, in 1875 at #11, and in 1876 at #33 where he was also listed in 1879. From 1889 Sarah Ann Street was renamed to Dawson Street. He likely remained at #33 until about 1890 when he moved a short distance south to reside at 34, Wells Street in Redfern where he remained until his death. Hugh Wauhop's will stated the eastern boundary of his Sarah Ann Street property was "a cottage occupied by Andrew Love" 9. Likewise to his newspaper funeral notice Andrew's death registration listed his seven surviving children as - Eliza, Maria, Catherine, Rebecca, Herbert, Charles and Henry.

Children of Matilda O’Hara and Andrew Love were:

Her mother Matilda's July 1914 newspaper notices, as transcribed at source #2 below, named her just as Mrs. John Latham whilst the other surviving children were named as Mrs & Mrs implying her husband John was deceased or they had separated or divorced with the most likely being he was deceased before July 1914 and, as the last chid was born in 1884 likely soon after, perhaps John Latham who died aged 35 in 1886 (#1886-2643) registered at Liechhart with no parent names recorded.

When she married the NSW BDM index has her sole given name as "May". 3   Gwenda Andersen of Caloundra, QLD. to compiler - letter dated 2 Apr 1999 advised date & place of 1854 marriage and of Andrew's 1906 death  - sourced by her from 1993 notes on Love family research by Andrew and Matilda gg grandaughter Lyn Casey. Andrew Love 1906 death cert. registration informants were Richard Austen & John Kelso and it stated he had been a resident of NSW for 56 yrs (i.e. arrived Australia 1850).
NSW BDM Indexes #1906-7289 (note - "Andrew" given by the death registration informants as Andrew Love's father's name was incorrect - it was actually James as per his 1850 Lloyds Immigration record)
Sydney Morning Herald, 6 Jul 1906 - FUNERALS - "LOVE. - The Friends of Messrs. Henry, Herbert and Charles and Misses Catherine, Rebecca, Eliza and Maria Love are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of their late beloved Father Andrew Love; to move from his late residence, No. 34, Wells-street, Redfern, this afternoon at 1.30 o'clock" - for burial in Church of England Cemetery, Necropolis.

7   NSW Assisted Immigration - AO of NSW (State Records) reels # 2136 & 2461 - arrived Lloyds 29 Jun 1850 -  age 19, C of E religion, from Cavan, County Cavan, and parents were James & Eliza - father in the America.
8    The Famine Immigrants - Irish Immigrants Arriving at the Port of New York 1846-1851 (Baltimore,: Genealogical Pub. Co. 1983-1986),  vol. 4, p. 193 - a James Love, age 45, labourer, arrived New York on the William D. Sewall on 22 May 1849 (note - emigrants often crossed the Irish sea to depart from Liverpool in England). As Andrew's mother was apparently deceased before 1850, another perhaps less likely candidate was a James & Eliza Love, respectively aged 58 & 45, who with 8 children aged from 1 to 22 years, arrived at New York from Belfast, Ireland on 13 Apr 1849 on the Huron (vol. 4, p. 62). Note - a Ships List for the William D. Sewall and the Huron would be available from several sources, such as in 2007 by online NARA ordering or from www.ancestry.com that has it indexed that in 1849 two named James Love arrived at New York - images of the records are obtainable and should state whether either's former place was County Cavan. As the William D Sewell James was aged 45 he would have been 28 when the Tithe Applotment Valuations of Ireland were done for Co. Cavan in 1833 so may then have been listed then in Co. Cavan on a farm. Alternatively, as the given name of Robert was likely a name of genealogical significance to Andrew Love and, may have been his grandfather, he could have been listed as the tenant of a farm in the 1833 applotments.
9   Gwenda Andersen to the compiler - letter dated 28 Feb 1999 - advised Hugh Wauhop's will stated his property at Strawberry Hills was "bounded on the east by the cottage presently occupied by Andrew Love in Sarah Ann Street" (will date is unknown - Hugh died 1877).
10  As a second child was named Robert after the death of first it suggests the name had a significance in one parent's ancestry. As it was not an O'Hara family given name in Ireland it seems likely it was the name of one of Andrew's grandparents. The NSW BDM Indexes when issued on CD-ROM in the 1990s listed the birth of both the 1858 and 1859 sons named Robert. However whilst also listing their 1858 and 1861 deaths, it listed an additional two named Robert as having died in 1858, each with different registration numbers. So it had three Andrew and Maria children named Robert dying in 1858 with registration numbers - 278, 786, 896! However the more up to date and corrected online NSW BDM Registry Indexes as at Sep 2007 no longer had the additional two confusing Robert Love death registrations! There were also two named William who similary both died as infants but William did have a known significance in the O'Hara genealogy being a brother of Matilda's who in 1880 came to Australia.
