Penfield's Past, by Katherine Wilcox Thompson, page 56: Daniel STILLWELL came to Penfield shortly after Nov 1800, the fourth settler. Penfield's Past, page 113: "Daniel STILLWELL is reported as first tavern keeper. He was here very early, for he was named a highway commissioner in the Northfield records of 7 Apr 1801. The STILLWELL Tavern, said to be operating in 1806, was on the site where Daniel Penfield later built his brick store." In 1863, Samuel Strowger wrote: ".....Daniel STILLWELL kept the first tavern on the site of the present furnace of Benjamin Howe, the brick material of which last, once formed Mr. Penfield's store." Penfield's Past, page 119: account books of Tryon and Adams, earliest store in Northfield, listed name of early Penfield settler, Daniel STILLWELL, 28 Feb 1803. Daniel was named as guardian of his daughter, Ruth's children following the death of their father, Jabez ESGET.
