Through the Rainbow Canyon by Walter R. Averett, Grand Junction, CO, 1995;
Page 7: "Samuel and Amity KERSHAW established a ranch about 3 miles south of Caliente. The KERSHAWS settled in a side canyon. They planted an orchard and had a fine garden. The ranch passed through various hands; Jim Ryan was the last private owner. The Ryans donated it to Lincoln County in 1934 as a recreation area. It is now known as Kershaw-Ryan State Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps did a lot of the development of the park. Floods in recent years washed out the road and made the park inaccessible until the road was reopened in 1994."
Page 6: "The immediate area of Stine siding, 10 miles south of Caliente, has had a profusion of names. On October 29, 1882, long before any railroad was there, KERSHAW post office was established. (Samuel KERSHAW had moved his family into present KERSHAW Canyon, about 4 miles south of Caliente, in 1870.) KERSHAW post office was on the east side of the canyon, and the original railroad was built there. When Bamberger-Delamar Mining Company put in their pumping plant to supply water to Delamar, the plant was built in the bottom of the wash, near KERSHAW..... KERSHAW post office was renamed Stine on December 30, 1904."
Page 26: "Bullionville precinct was established in 1892, with the schoolhouse as the polling place; Samuel KERSHAW, John Pippin, and John Kiernan were the election judges."
Page 31: "A small building in KERSHAW Canyon was used as a school in 1883. School moved to a building near the hot springs, called the Bath House school, in 1901. A rock schoolhouse was built on Culverwell Street in late 1906, when enrollment had reached 60 pupils in all grades."

From Kershaw Family, Part I, on Ancestry.com: The KERSHAWs came to America about 1844. They boarded the Scotia at Liverpool, England, and landed at Baltimore. The four youngest KERSHAW children (Samuel, Robert, Sophia, Emily)
went west with their mother. The father, Abraham, remained in Philadelphia with daughters Mary and Betty. Thomas and Edwin probably remained in Baltimore, Maryland, where they worked, then later went to Manauka, a suburb of Philadelphia. The eldest son, John, is thought to have remained in England. The second son, James, died when he was ten years old.

From Ancestry.com: In 1841, Samuel resided at Prestwich Cum Oldham, Lancashire, England. From 1855 to about 1857 he was in Beaver, Utah. After he sold his property in Lincoln Co, Nevada, he resided at Iron County, Utah, and was at Indian Springs, Clark, Nevada at the time of his death.
