Ellis November 20, 1907 in Hamilton, Ontario, son of Unknown Ellis and Unknown UNKNOWN.  He was born April 06, 1881 in England, and died October 01, 1977 in Vancouver, BC.

Notes for Julia Ann Morgan:

Julia Ann Morgan was/is my great-grandmother. Julia was left a young widow with two small children in 1903. Julia Ann Morgan married twice.

1. William Dawe b July 12, 1872 in Cupids, NF d May 3,1903 off the coasts of New Brunswick on board the fishing vessel SS Coban.

2. Lewis James Ellis b April 6, 1881 in England d October 1, 1977 in Vancouver, BC. L.J. as he was known married Julia Ann Dawe on November 20, 1907 in Hamilton, Ontario.

More Notes for Julia Ann Morgan:

According to Family Tree records it states that Julia left Cupids, NF between the years of 1904-1905 for a new life with her two young children, Stanley & Frances Dawe to live in Hamilton, Ontario.

More Notes for Julia Morgan:

According to Family Tree notes from Shirley Flewitt, my second cousin, it states that Julia left in the early morning hours (about) the year of 1904 by train on what was called the "Newfie Bullet" for three days across the province to Port Basques where they boarded a boat for Montreal. From there they boarded a train which took them to Hamilton where they landed at the old Stuart Street Train Station. The old station has since been replaced as far as I have been able to determine and from stories told by family.

Notes for Julia Morgan:

Julia Morgan worked for a few years after arriving in Hamilton in housework to provide for her little family. She had friends look after her two small children. According to Shirley, she said her mother, Frances Helena Dawe always said she left Newfoundland when she was around 4 years of age. Frances was b in 1900 and her brother, Stanley was b 1898 so if you take into consideration the information Frances told her family that she was 4 years old it would place my grandfather, Stanley as being around 6 years of age. My grandfather always said he was around 5 which would be correct with the family most likely arriving in Hamilton before his 6th birthday in October. We the family have determined the year to be 1904 as the year they left NF from verbal statements from Frances telling her family she was 4 and my grandfather, Stanley stating he was around 5 when they moved to Hamilton, Ontario.

Notes for Date of Move from NF:

According to Family Tree Charts the actual date recorded for Julia Ann Morgan's move from Cupids, NF to Hamilton, Ontario was between the year of 1904-1905. We the family have determined this date from all verbal sources that stated the family left at that time.

Note: Julia Ann Morgan was a woman of God who believed in the power of prayer. I have some wonderful memories of visiting the family home with my grandfather Stanley Dawe in Hamilton, Ontario as a five year old little girl. She was a woman who demonstrated Godly love to her family and to anyone who came across her pathway. I remember in my many visits  a beautiful lady who always had a smile on her face. She would stroke my head and look down on me with a cheery smile.

Notes for William Dawe:

William Dawe great-grandfather to Judith Arlene Scott. According to my mother she told me my great-grandfather fished the seas off the coasts of Newfoundland and New Brunswick for most of his life. The family understood William & his family to be fishermen. The Daw family go back many years as men who fished the seas off the coasts of Newfoundland and surrounding areas. As understood from Family tree charts and family my great-grandfather owned and operated a fishing vessel named the SS Coban. He and two other men on board the ship were fishing along the coasts of New Brunswick when there was a coal gas explosion on board. As a result of the coal gas explosion the ship sank taking all three men with it. The ship including the men would never be recovered. To this day as far as we the family can determine the ship SS Coban has never been recovered or re-floated again. There has been some talk of a ship named SS Coban that was discovered and re-floated sometime around 1927. This ship is not to be confused with the SS Coban that was owned and operated by my great-grandfather William Dawe.

Note: Grenfell Boyd Morgan my third cousin has provided further information on the SS Coban vessel and the events that lead to the loss of all three men on board the Coban vessel. He has since told me that the Coban was not owned by the Daw Family as I had understood through Family records previously. He provided information that the Coban was indeed owned by the Dominion Coal Company. He also shared information that the vessel was not lost at sea on May 3, 1903 when the coal gas exploded on board. As a result of the explosion Grenfell confirmed what my family records state that all three men were lost at sea as a result of the coal gas explosion. He also provided me a name of the second man who was lost at sea when the coal gas explosion occurred. The man's name was William Morgan. I have no other information about the other man who was lost at sea along with William Dawe & William Morgan on May 3, 1903. I don't have any information to tell me if any of the men were ever recovered once they were lost at sea off the coasts of New Brunswick. My family records all say that these men were never recovered.

Note: Robert Parsons a Archivist ( Level 1) Researcher, Writer for Newfoundland Shipwrecks has also confirmed this same information. I discovered his website while surfing the internet searching for further information on the SS Coban vessel & the circumstances surrounding my great-grandfather's death. It was then I sent an e-mail to Mr. Robert Parsons asking him if he could help me in locating any further information about the SS Coban vessel. At the same time I enquired if he had any information about the events leading to the death of the three men including my great-grandfather William Dawe. I told him that I wasn't able to find out any other information apart from the information I already had through family records. He was generous to offer his expertise assistance and went to the University and was able to find out the same information as Grenfell Morgan did. Mr. Robert Parsons has since confirmed all information that I have learned from my third cousin Grenfell Morgan.

Note: At this time both Robert Parsons & Grenfell Morgan are researching further to try and discover any other information about the events that lead to William Dawe's death including the other two men. I would like to say a very much appreciated thank you to both men who have offered their time, expertise and knowledge in helping me with the research of these events.

Note: The new information is certainly contrary to what I have in family records and to what was told to me by family members. However, I so appreciate any information that would help solve this mystery. I am still researching for any information that would tell me what fishing vessel if any my great-grandfather owned and what is profession was if he was not a Fisherman as family records seem to suggest. We the family have very little information about this event that led to William's death. What we know now is William Dawe and the other two men were lost at sea along the coasts of New Brunswick. It has been established by both Grenfell & Robert that there was a coal gas explosion on board the SS Coban vessel which resulted in the deaths of all three men on board the SS Coban May 3, 1903.

Note: According to my mother Margaret Irene Raynor (Mays-Dawe she said her grandfather William Dawe along with two other men were lost at sea due to a coal gas explosion on board the SS Coban off the coasts of New Brunswick. The three men and the shipping vessel were all included as being lost at sea May 3, 1903 as a result of the coal gas explosion.

Note: My second cousin, Shirley Flewitt in a letter to me confirmed the same information that William Dawe and two other men were lost at sea as a result of a coal gas explosion on board the SS Coban vessel. As far as any of the family knew none of the men were ever recovered. We all understood that the men and the ship were lost at sea.

More Notes for William Dawe lost at sea, May 3, 1903:

According to Robert Parsons, Researcher, Writer, Archivist (Level 1) he has provided a Newspaper article that reads as follows>

A Fatal Accident:

The explosion on board the "Coban" while on her way from St. John's to Montreal on Saturday week last, resulted in the death of three persons, two of them Newfoundlanders. One of them was a William Dawe of Cupids, who left there for Montreal on the steamer. His sudden death is felt at Cupids keenly, where he leaves a wife and two children and especially so, as the body of the unfortunate man was not recovered, it being hurled into the sea by the force of the explosion.

Source of article was taken from the "Vindicator" believed to be a Newfoundland paper.

Note: According to The Brigus United Methodist Church Baptism Records it has recorded William Dawe as his birth date July 12, 1868 and his baptism as August 19, 1868. Both dates confirm what is recorded on Family Tree Charts but the year of 1868 for both the birth and baptism is recorded differently in the Brigus Church Baptismal Records from what we have and know as William Dawe being born in the year of 1872.

 19.  William George4 Morgan (William3, James2, William1) was born Abt. 1898-1899 in Burnt Head, NFLD, and died in Gander, NF.  He married Pearl Oakley Pike 1929 in NFLD, daughter of Unknown Pike and Unknown UNKNOWN.  She was born in St. Johns, NFLD, and died in Ganders, NFLD.

Notes for William George Morgan:

According to letter written in 1979 William and his wife Pearl Oakley Pike knew Shirley Flewitt. Shirley's grandmother Julia came to visit them in 1929 and had tea at their home the same year of their marriage. William said  his Auntie Rachael Whelan kept them up-dated on Julia Morgan her sister. He remembers his mother taking him to say good-bye to Julia and my grandfather Stanley Dawe and his sister Frances Helena Dawe when they left Cupids, NF for Hamilton, Ontario.

William said he was about five years old  the same age as Stanley Dawe.

More about William Morgan: I have stated William Morgan's birth-date to be about the year of 1898-1899. William had made mention of his family saying goodbye to Julia Morgan and her two children when he was about 5 years of age, the same age as my grandfather Stanley Dawe. It is known by family that Julia Morgan left Cupids, NF around the year of 1904 or 1905 for Hamilton, Ontario. My grandfather was reported to be about 6 years of age and his sister Frances Helena Flewitt was around 4 years of age. My grandfather was b in 1898 in Cupids, NF and his sister was b in 1900 in Cupids, NF. If you take into consideration the time line and the age William said he was at that time I have calculated his time of birth as being about  1898-1899 around the same year as my grandfather, Stanley Dawe. Further research would be recommended to substantiate this claim.

Note: More about William George Morgan. According to a letter written in 1979 to my second cousin Shirley Flewitt, William stated that he and his wife Pearl were going to be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary that year.

Notes for Cora Myrtle Lockery:

Cora Lockery was/is my grandmother. She had a love for music. In her younger day s she learned how to play the piano. My grandmother was the one who I always looked up to for direction and for comfort. She was always there for me. I have very early memories of her when I at the young age of two went to live with my grandparents when my parents separated. My mother and I went to Hamilton, Ontario to live in the family home on Hyde Park Avenue after their separation in Toronto, Ontario. This is where my mother and my aunts were raised for most of their lives. My grandmother was gifted in sewing and she made all of the families clothing including all the prom dresses for her daughters graduations from high school. She made all of my doll clothes. "Mama" the name I called her was the one who walked me to school each day playing games and singing songs. She made attending school a fun thing to do. I will always treasure the times I had with my grandmother during all those growing up years.

Notes for Margaret Irene Dawe:

Margaret Irene Raynor {Mays-Dawe} was a retired medical staff secretary for the Hamilton Civic Hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario. She was dedicated to serving her hospital and the doctors for almost 20 years. She was given a retirement tea to honor her many years of dedicated service in 1986.They gave her a wonderful send off with showering her with many gifts and many letters of thanks and appreciation by the heads of departments, doctors, nurses and fellow peers with whom she worked with. Her whole life was dedicated to her family. She gave of herself and always went the second mile. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her l ife. Mom had a love for sports, watching golf and tennis and in her earlier day s skied and attended many hockey and football games. Mom's favorite animals were birds and dogs. Her dog "Missy" was her pride and joy. "Missy" was a gift to herself when she retired from the hospital. My mother was my best friend and my confidant. I thank God for my mother and for giving me such a wonderful opportunity to enjoy all the years of dedication and support she gave me in my growing u p years and later as an adult. No matter what my mother did, she always put the other person's needs over her own. Even in death she was looking out for her families needs and wondering how we were feeling and how we were going to cope with her death. My mother was a treasure. My mother was a very unique individual, very special indeed. I cannot think of anyone who could ever replace the relationship I had with my mother. I have found out first hand that a mother's love is never replaceable.

Harvie Harry Mays was the youngest son of ten living children, the son of Thomas and Rose Mays. My father was a gifted musician with singing in a choir with 7 other members of his family as a young lad. He was gifted in playing the piano a s a young boy and continues today. In the war years he played piano and sang in a small band. After the war years he continued on with his music. He was invited to perform at many clubs around the Toronto Ontario area. My father had a stroke two years ago and for a short time he was unable to play the piano. Not long after his stroke my father was invited by the rehabilitation staff who had been instrumental in getting him back on his feet to come and put on a concert for all the patients and staff. It was a complete success and this is what gave him the confidence and encouraged him to play once again.

Notes for Stanley John Scott:

Stan my miracle child a blessing from God was born as a premature infant who was just over 5 pounds. He had unlike his sister a head full of blond hair. He was small but wirily as my family doctor said to me just shortly after his birth." Wirily" means in the English dictionary 1.made of wire.2.like wire.3.lean, strong and tough. The description of "wirily" suits Stan to a "T". Right from the time when I brought Stan home from the hospital he always was a strong little tyke. He certainly had a small beginning but soon picked up and by the time he was 3 months old he was doing everything that babies do at that age.  He was a good natured little boy. Right from the start Stan had a personality that had strong determination. I can now see this personality being the spring board for shaping and preparing him for his adult years. He never had a shy personality but was al ways outgoing. His grandmother and I would often have many a laugh over this little boy running up to a young child on the street and saying: You "wanna" be my friend ??. A short while later sure enough you would see him off playing with the child he had asked to be his friend. I believe Stan's personality has taken him to where he is today. I have appreciated his warm outgoing personality that has always given me encouragement and always lifted my spirits when they have needed a lift. Stan has a way to bring cheer into any situation. Over the years Stan has brought much cheer and joy to my life. Like his sister he too has become my friend and the one in whom I can confide in.

80              ii.       Linda Margaret Scott, born November 23, 1973 in Hamilton, Ontario.  She married Darren John Brant August 06, 2000 in Rose Garden, Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby, BC; born February 22, 1972 in Powell River, BC.

Notes for Linda Margaret Scott:

Linda Margaret Scott was a blessing from God. Linda certainly was a miracle baby. She was born absolutely perfect. I will never forget the big grey-blue eyes wide open right from the time she was born. She had a full head of dark brown hair that was almost black. You would never know that today as she is naturally blond. She lost all the dark hair by the time she was 6 months old. Linda who likes to be called "Lynn" took after her grandmother when she was born. They both had dark almost black hair. Both of them became blond by the time they were 6 months of age. Lynn is a very loving caring young woman who always is ready to share a smile. Lynn has grown into a beautiful woman and developed a warm personality. She has developed from a personality that was shy and timid as a little girl who wouldn't leave her mother's side at any time to a beautiful young woman who is outgoing and able to speak her mind freely. She has always been noted for her quick wit and sense of humor.  As an adult she has always been able to speak her mind and share what she is thinking. We as a family have had many laughs over Lynn being able to speak her mind and what has come out of her mouth at times. One thing for sure over the years I have had a good relationship with my daughter. We have done many things together and enjoyed each others company. Today she is not only my daughter but she is my best friend in whom I am able to confide in.

Darren her husband is an Engineer and Lynn a Legal Assistant in a Law Firm in Downtown Vancouver. They both are career people who enjoy their work. Lynn is well suited for her position in Law as she has the ability to speak what is on her mind and is able to maintain a good sense of humour which encourages a healthy environment to work in for both her employer and fellow peers.

Note: Linda Margaret Scott married Darren John Brant August 6, 2000 in the Rose Garden, Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby, BC.

It was a beautiful hot sunny day. The day was perfect for having an outdoor wedding. The orchestra was in fine tune playing soft music as the guests arrived. Lynn was a beautiful young bride wearing a long flowing off white gown. The happy couple said their wedding vows before many family members from far and near and many friends of both the bride and groom. The reception was held at the Burnaby Fire Fighters Social Athletic Club in Burnaby, BC. The wedding day for Lynn and Darren from start to finish was a picture perfect day. Lynn and Darren are a happy couple who are well suited for each other. They will have many happy years as husband and wife together.

Notes for Darren John Brant:

Darren is more of a son than a son-in-law to me. I thank God for Darren and that he has become part of our family. I well remember the day Lynn introduced Darren to the family. It was on her birthday. We all were celebrating her special day at her grandmothers home. I liked Darren right from the start. He had and still does have a winning warm personality that everyone likes. He certainly won me over with his caring and outgoing personality. Darren has qualities that show genuine care and concern for his fellow man. He has a quiet and gentle spirit. He is laid-back and never allows anything to irritate or disturb him. He certainly is the peacemaker of the family. Wherever he goes he promotes harmony and unity. He has been so loving and supportive of me. I so appreciate Darren and all the things he has done for me and continues to do. He has not only brought happiness to me but has brought it to Lynn and to our whole family. The past 3+ years all of our lives have been enriched with Darren's presence in our family.

Note: Darren graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Engineering. He has done very well for himself and has achieved much in his young years. Darren is well suited for his career and is well liked by all who work with him. He certainly promotes harmony and unity in the workplace. Yes, Darren has made me very proud to call him "Son".
