* Action of 16 March 1917 was a naval battle in which the German auxiliary cruiser Leopard was engaged and sunk by the British Armed boarding steamer HMS Dundee and the cruiser HMS Achilles. After leaving port in March disguised as the Norwegian freighter Rena Norge, the Leopard set sail on its mission to disrupt Allied commerce. On the 17 March it was stopped in the North Sea by the cruiser HMS Achilles and ordered to proceed to the boarding vessel HMS Dundee for inspection. Heavily outgunned Captain Hans von Laffert, the raider's commander, had no option other to proceed to meet the boarding vessel. Captain Selwyn Day of the Dundee dispatched a launch containing a boarding party with an officer and five men to investigate the mysterious ship. Hans von Laffert realizing he was about to be discovered detained the party and after about an hour opened fire on the Dundee with a salvo of two torpedoes. The steamer manoeuvred out of the way barely in time and the torpedoes missed Captain Day's ship by twenty feet. Day ordered his guncrews to open fire and a hail of shells struck the Leopard damaging a gun and setting fires. The Achilles hearing the sound of gunfire returned to the scene and opened fire on the raider as the Dundee withdrew. Shortly after the Achilles's arrival the Leopard sank with all 319 hands going down with the ship. Damage to the British vessels was light and the only casualties consisted of the six boarding party members who were trapped in the Leopard when it sank. |

DALKEITH
ADVERTISER 1 November 1917
|
The death took place in Cromarty Military Hospital on Thursday last, from the effects of wounds received in action, of Private David Dalziel, Black Watch, the second son of Mr John Dalziel, the well known veteran pedestrian and trainer. The deceased had a long record of military service, having enlisted over 19 years ago. He was with his regiment through practically the whole of the South African War, and held the King's and Queen's medals in recognition of his services in that campaign. on the outbreak of the present conflict he was transferred from India, where his regiment was then stationed , to France, and subsequently experienced nearly three years of thrilling warfare on the Western Front, till he was wounded by shrapnel several monhs ago. In France he acted as a machine gunner. He is the second son of Mr John Dalziel to make the supreme sacrifice in this war, and other three sons are serving. Dalkeith Advertiser 26 August 1920 DALZIEL

Dalkeith
Advertiser - 21 September 1916 |
Official intimation was received by Miss Dalziel, Pettigrew's Close, on Saturday, that her brother, Private Frank Dalziel, of the Royal Scots, was killed in action on the 28th August. An army chaplain, in the course of a letter breaking the sad news to Miss Dalziel, states that Frank was killed by a shell in the trenches during the last turn of the battalion in the line. His death must have been instantaneous; he was spared pain and suffering. He was buried by his comrades behind the firing line, and a cross was being erected to mark the place. Miss Dalziel had the sympathy of the entire battalion in her great loss, and he prayed that she may know the comfort of God. Private Frank Dalziel, whose father Mr John Dalziel, was at one time a well known pedestrian, and resides in Edinburgh, enlisted about eighteen months ago. He served in the trenches all last winter, and was invalided home in the early spring suffering from frostbite, returning to the front about two months ago. In civil life he was employed as a miner at Smeaton Colliery. Private Dalziel was the youngest of six soldier brothers serving in the Great War, one of whom, Sergeant W. Dalziel, has been permanently disabled as a result of wounds received in action about a year ago. Dalkeith Advertiser - 26 August 1920 DALZIEL

Herald - 14 May 1917
|
In a recent casualty list appears the name of Bombardier Edward Milne, of Benhar, killed in action. The deceased was a son of Mr David Milne, of Coalburn Farm, Benhar, and was one of three brothers to leave with the main body of the Expeditionary Force, attached to the artillery section. He saw service on Gallipoli, being a member of one of the first gun teams to land on those shores. While serving with his company he received a wound that necessitated his being invalided to -England. From there he went to France with the New Zealanders. The deceased was a splendid type of soldier, and at the time of his death was about 25 years of age. Prior to enlisting he was engaged in farming pursuits, and was educated at the Stirling school, although born in Scotland. One of his brothers (Roy) has been invalided home, and is at present working at Dunedin, but his other brother is still in France. |

TRIBUTE FROM CAPTAIN Private Thomson
Scott, eldest son of the Rev A Murray Scott, lately minister of King Street
United Free Church, Aberdeen, and now of Colliston, Aberdeen, has been
killed in action. It is my painful duty to acquaint you of the death of your son. Private Thomson Scott. Who was killed in action this morning. A German rifle grenade burst in the post held by him and another man. Your son was killed instantaneously and the other man severly wounded. I had the pleasure of knowing your son since he joined us in Bedford in September 1914, and I share the respect in which he was held by all who came into contact with him. No. 1 Platoon, in which he was, looked on his a father, and today they are mourning as they have never mourned before. He was a fine soldier, and as fine a comrade. As a business man he was invaluable as company accountant. He will be buried tomorrow in a soldiers cemetery behind the lines, the exact location of which will be communicated to you in due course. I can only express the sincere sympathy of the officers, N C O's and men of A company in your loss. Private Scott was 33 years of age and before enlisting was a successful and able chartered accountant in London. He returned to the front from a furlough at home only last month. Lance Corporal Erle Scott, his youngest brother, is also at the front. A third brother is in the forces and expects soon to go abroad on active service. Dundee Courier - 10 June 1916 FORFARSHIRE
SON OF THE MANSE The Rev A Murray Scott, United Free Church Manse, Colliston, has received intimation that his son, Private Thomson Scott, Seaforth Highlanders, has met his death. Private Thomson
Scott was before enlisting a chartered accountant in Edinburgh. A brother,
who was chief engineer in the mercantile service, joined the 2d Northamptonshire
Fusiliers, and now holds the rank of sergeant, while another brother,
who was also a C A before the war is a non-commissioned officer in a Territorial
battalion. |

The London Gazette announced that Flying Officer David Douglas Pryde has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation read: On 20th May 1940, this officer was detailed for a collaboration operation involving an attack on the communication centre at Hannapes. Despite difficult conditions, he succeeded in identifying the target from a very low altitude. Although his aircraft was hit heavily, Flying Officer Pryde climbed to 3,000 feet and executed a successful bombing attack. His aircraft subsequently caught fire, but he continued flying and when height could no longer be maintained, the entire crew landed by parachute. Flying Officer Pryde has completed sixteen operational flights during six months of war flying and has displayed considerable courage and determination. |

The
Express, Melton - Saturday, 12 May 1945
YOUNG MELTON WARRIOR FALLS IN BATTLE Many
homes in Melton district were saddened last Tuesday when news reached
Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Robertson, of Melton South, that their third son, Keith,
had been killed in action on 2nd May. Only 24 years of age, L/Cpl Keith
Robertson was a Ninth Division veteran of the Middle East and New Guinea
campaigns; and be laid down his life in the invasion of Tarakan, Borneo.
He was last home on leave exactly 12 months ago. A most popular lad, he
was affectionately known throughout the district as "Red" or
"Bluey." He attended Melton South State School and before enlisting
was employed by the British Motor Service, South Melbourne. He was member
of Melton football team. When he sailed from Australia for the Middle
East he was just 20 years old. Much sympathy is felt for the parents in
their great loss, and for other members of the family, of whom the youngest
son is serving in naval operations in Asiatic waters. |

Australian War Memorial , Canberra |
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
The thousands of Australians who made the supreme sacrifice are commemorated on the walls of the Australian War Memorial
