* Action of 16 March 1917 was a naval battle in which the German auxiliary cruiser Leopard was engaged and sunk by the British Armed boarding steamer HMS Dundee and the cruiser HMS Achilles.

After leaving port in March disguised as the Norwegian freighter Rena Norge, the Leopard set sail on its mission to disrupt Allied commerce. On the 17 March it was stopped in the North Sea by the cruiser HMS Achilles and ordered to proceed to the boarding vessel HMS Dundee for inspection. Heavily outgunned Captain Hans von Laffert, the raider's commander, had no option other to proceed to meet the boarding vessel.

Captain Selwyn Day of the Dundee dispatched a launch containing a boarding party with an officer and five men to investigate the mysterious ship. Hans von Laffert realizing he was about to be discovered detained the party and after about an hour opened fire on the Dundee with a salvo of two torpedoes. The steamer manoeuvred out of the way barely in time and the torpedoes missed Captain Day's ship by twenty feet. Day ordered his guncrews to open fire and a hail of shells struck the Leopard damaging a gun and setting fires. The Achilles hearing the sound of gunfire returned to the scene and opened fire on the raider as the Dundee withdrew. Shortly after the Achilles's arrival the Leopard sank with all 319 hands going down with the ship. Damage to the British vessels was light and the only casualties consisted of the six boarding party members who were trapped in the Leopard when it sank.

STRATHBLANE - CAPTAIN NORMAN BLACK KILLED IN ACTION
The information that Captain Norman A Black, R F A. had been killed in action reached the village on Saturday. The fallen officer, though not a residenter, had a wide circle of friends in the parish by whom he was held in much esteem. He was the only son of the late Mr William Black, well known in business circles in Glasgow, and more widely known among chess players throughout the county as one of the finest players of his time. Captain Black was a partner in Richardson, Findlay & Co and had travelled widely, having lived for several years in Japan and Manilla. He had little inclination for soldiering or adventure, and had great business claims, but, like many others, he at once answered the call of his country, and has given his services and unhappily, his life. At the close of the forenoon service the Rev T Johnston paid a tribute to his memory, and dwelt on his fine character and unselfish heroism

The death took place in Cromarty Military Hospital on Thursday last, from the effects of wounds received in action, of Private David Dalziel, Black Watch, the second son of Mr John Dalziel, the well known veteran pedestrian and trainer. The deceased had a long record of military service, having enlisted over 19 years ago. He was with his regiment through practically the whole of the South African War, and held the King's and Queen's medals in recognition of his services in that campaign. on the outbreak of the present conflict he was transferred from India, where his regiment was then stationed , to France, and subsequently experienced nearly three years of thrilling warfare on the Western Front, till he was wounded by shrapnel several monhs ago. In France he acted as a machine gunner. He is the second son of Mr John Dalziel to make the supreme sacrifice in this war, and other three sons are serving.

     Dalkeith Advertiser - 21 September 1916

Official intimation was received by Miss Dalziel, Pettigrew's Close, on Saturday, that her brother, Private Frank Dalziel, of the Royal Scots, was killed in action on the 28th August. An army chaplain, in the course of a letter breaking the sad news to Miss Dalziel, states that Frank was killed by a shell in the trenches during the last turn of the battalion in the line. His death must have been instantaneous; he was spared pain and suffering. He was buried by his comrades behind the firing line, and a cross was being erected to mark the place. Miss Dalziel had the sympathy of the entire battalion in her great loss, and he prayed that she may know the comfort of God. Private Frank Dalziel, whose father Mr John Dalziel, was at one time a well known pedestrian, and resides in Edinburgh, enlisted about eighteen months ago. He served in the trenches all last winter, and was invalided home in the early spring suffering from frostbite, returning to the front about two months ago. In civil life he was employed as a miner at Smeaton Colliery. Private Dalziel was the youngest of six soldier brothers serving in the Great War, one of whom, Sergeant W. Dalziel, has been permanently disabled as a result of wounds received in action about a year ago.

POSTED AS MISSING
MYSTERY OF CARDIFF SHIP IN NORTH SEA

The following cessel was on Wednesday posted at Lloyd's as missing:-
The Euterpe, of Cardiff (Captain Billot), which sailed from Huelva for Middlesbrough on December 36 last, with a cargo of pyrites.
She passed Yarmouth on January 7, taking on board a Trinity pilot and has not since been heard of.
The Euterpe is a vessel of 1,552 tons gross and is owned by the Euterpe Steamship Company Limited (Osborn and Wallis)

Manchester Evening News - 25 July 1917

TRAGEDY OF THE SEA

The Euterpe Steamship Co., of Cardiff, were awarded £10,000 and costs against the North of England Protecting and Indemnity Association on an insurance policy against war risks in regard to the s.s. Euterpe. which was on a voyage from Huelva to Middlesbro'. She called at Great Yarmouth on January 7, 1916, for a pilot and afterwards completely disappeared without leaving a trace.
Mr Justice Rowlatt said the ship most probably struck a mine, and no doubt what took place was a sudden and overwhelming disaster. The defendants contended the weather was bad enough for the ship to have foundered, and that the insurers against "perils of the sea" and not the defendants were liable.

FOR HIS COUNTRY - Official word reached Mr and Mrs Knight, late of Easthouses, on Saturday morning, that their son, Private Thomas Knight, Gordon Highlanders, had been killed in action. About a fortnight previously - they had received intimation that their son had been injured, and this was followed a week later by the following letter from Captain Hillas :- "I regret to inform you of the death of your son 6191 Pte T Knight. Information reached me last night that he had been killed on 13th November.
Up till then I believed him to be wounded only.
He took part in the action near __________ on that date, and was on of those who helped his battalion to distinguish itself. He died as a good soldier and a brave man. I regret his loss and offer you my sincere sympathy." Private Knight, who was twenty-six years of age, enlisted in January 1915, previous to which he was employed as a miner with the Lothian Coal Company. He had seen a good deal of active service in France, and had been twice invalided home, once suffering from wounds and again from illness. He was a young man of considerable promise, and with a view to improving his position in life had, for three sessions before the outbreak of war, attended mining classes at the Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh. He was of bright and amiable disposition and his early death is deeply regretted by many friends in the district

    Bruce Herald - 14 May 1917

In a recent casualty list appears the name of Bombardier Edward Milne, of Benhar, killed in action. The deceased was a son of Mr David Milne, of Coalburn Farm, Benhar, and was one of three brothers to leave with the main body of the Expeditionary Force, attached to the artillery section. He saw service on Gallipoli, being a member of one of the first gun teams to land on those shores. While serving with his company he received a wound that necessitated his being invalided to -England. From there he went to France with the New Zealanders. The deceased was a splendid type of soldier, and at the time of his death was about 25 years of age. Prior to enlisting he was engaged in farming pursuits, and was educated at the Stirling school, although born in Scotland. One of his brothers (Roy) has been invalided home, and is at present working at Dunedin, but his other brother is still in France.

Information has reached Falkirk that Mr George Pryde, a brother of the Rev Mr Marshall Pryde, minister of St Modan's Church, Falkirk, who is attached to the Scots Greys, has been wounded at Lille, and is at present undergoing treatment in Bristol Royal Infirmary. Mr Pryde had just been a short time home from India, where he had served for a number of years with his regiment, when war broke out. TRIBUTE FROM CAPTAIN

Private Thomson Scott, eldest son of the Rev A Murray Scott, lately minister of King Street United Free Church, Aberdeen, and now of Colliston, Aberdeen, has been killed in action.
The mournful intelligence is conveyed in the following letter dated June 4, which Mr Scott received from Captain J B Morrison, Seaforth Highlanders, in a battalion of which Private Scott was serving:-

It is my painful duty to acquaint you of the death of your son. Private Thomson Scott. Who was killed in action this morning. A German rifle grenade burst in the post held by him and another man. Your son was killed instantaneously and the other man severly wounded.

I had the pleasure of knowing your son since he joined us in Bedford in September 1914, and I share the respect in which he was held by all who came into contact with him. No. 1 Platoon, in which he was, looked on his a father, and today they are mourning as they have never mourned before. He was a fine soldier, and as fine a comrade. As a business man he was invaluable as company accountant. He will be buried tomorrow in a soldiers cemetery behind the lines, the exact location of which will be communicated to you in due course. I can only express the sincere sympathy of the officers, N C O's and men of A company in your loss.

Private Scott was 33 years of age and before enlisting was a successful and able chartered accountant in London. He returned to the front from a furlough at home only last month. Lance Corporal Erle Scott, his youngest brother, is also at the front. A third brother is in the forces and expects soon to go abroad on active service.

Australians on Service
Death of Private Cal Torney
Mr and Mrs Jacob Torney of Tongala, were advised yesterday of the death of their eldest son, Private Cal Torney, which took place at Woodman's Point quarantine Station, Western Australia, on Saturday from pneumonic Influenza. Private Torney enlisted in June last and sailed for the front in the Boonah, which was recalled when the armistice was signed. With a number of others he contracted influenza and some days ago his parents were advised of his serious illness.
Private Torney came to Tongala when he was very young and he was practically reared there. He was a bright lad, and his sunny disposition made him a favourite with everyone. News of his death has excited feeling of deep sorrow and keen sympathy is felt for his bereaved parents.

AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES. For most conspicuous bravery ound great devotion to duty: Victoria Cross (Posthumous). Lieutenant Albert Chowne. M.M., NX24405. After the capture of Dagua, the main enemy force withdrew southwards from the beach to previously prepared positions on the flank of the Division. " A" Company, after making contact with the enemy on a narrow ridge, was ordered to attack. The leading Platoon in the attack came under heavy fire from concealed enemy machine guns situated on a small rise dominating the approach. One member of the Platoon was killed and nine wounded including the Platoon Commander and the enemy continued to inflict casualties. Without await- ing orders Lieutenant Chowne, whose Platoon was in reserve, appreciated the plight of the leading Platoon and immediately rushed the enemy's position. Running up a steep narrow track, he hurled grenades which knocked out two enemy Light Machine Guns. Then calling on his men to follow him, and firing his sub-machine gun from the hip, he charged the enemy's defen- sive position. Although he sustained two serious wounds in the chest, the impetus of his charge carried him forward for 50 yards under the most intense machine-gun and rifle fire. This act of most conspicuous bravery, in which Lieutenant Chowne sacrificed his life, his brilliant leadership and great devotion to duty, resulted in the capture of a strongly held enemy position. The success of the Company's action was thereby ensured and the way prepared for the advance of the Division on Wewak.

The London Gazette announced that Flying Officer David Douglas Pryde has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation read:

On 20th May 1940, this officer was detailed for a collaboration operation involving an attack on the communication centre at Hannapes. Despite difficult conditions, he succeeded in identifying the target from a very low altitude. Although his aircraft was hit heavily, Flying Officer Pryde climbed to 3,000 feet and executed a successful bombing attack. His aircraft subsequently caught fire, but he continued flying and when height could no longer be maintained, the entire crew landed by parachute. Flying Officer Pryde has completed sixteen operational flights during six months of war flying and has displayed considerable courage and determination.

H M S COURAGEOUS - LOCAL CASUALTIES

A number of men residing in and around Portobello and district have lost their lives through the action of German submarines.
Among these are Mr John Reid, who went down in H M S Courageous. He was 38 years of age and formerly resided at 64 Niddrie Road and latterly at 56 Duddingston Park, Portobello.
Mr Reid was a member of the Royal Fleet Reserve. A few weeks ago, when war was inevitable, he was called up for active service. He was posted to H M Aeroplane Carrier Courageous, and, when that great ship was torpedoed by an enemy submarine, John Reid, along with many other gallant men lost his life. He gave his life for King and country and for the freedom, the priceless freedom, that our nation holds dear.
To Mrs Reid and her sister Miss Witts, we tender our heartfelt sympathy.

YOUNG MELTON WARRIOR FALLS IN BATTLE

Many homes in Melton district were saddened last Tuesday when news reached Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Robertson, of Melton South, that their third son, Keith, had been killed in action on 2nd May. Only 24 years of age, L/Cpl Keith Robertson was a Ninth Division veteran of the Middle East and New Guinea campaigns; and be laid down his life in the invasion of Tarakan, Borneo. He was last home on leave exactly 12 months ago. A most popular lad, he was affectionately known throughout the district as "Red" or "Bluey." He attended Melton South State School and before enlisting was employed by the British Motor Service, South Melbourne. He was member of Melton football team. When he sailed from Australia for the Middle East he was just 20 years old. Much sympathy is felt for the parents in their great loss, and for other members of the family, of whom the youngest son is serving in naval operations in Asiatic waters.

NAVAL OFFICER MISSING
LIEUTENANT JOHN WALKER
Advice has been received that Lieutenant John Walker, Royal New Zealand Navy, has been posted missing, presumed killed. Lieutenant Walker, who was 33 years of age, joined the Service as a boy, and was one of the few men to win a permanent commission in the Royal New Zealand Navy. The outbreak of war found him in England, where he, had just completed his course for warrant rank, having specialised in torpedo work. He served on destroyers operating in the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean until late, in 1940, when he returned to New Zealand to take up an appointment in a cruiser of the New Zealand squadron. Whilst, serving in this ship he saw action in the Pacific shortly after Japan's entry into the war, and afterwards.
Early in 1943 he returned to England, where he received his commission as a lieutenant. Up to the time he was reported missing, he was serving in destroyers operating in waters around the United Kingdom, and in the North Atlantic. His ship, of which he was second in command, took part in the invasion of Europe. Lieutenant Walker, who showed promise of a brilliant career in the Service, was a young officer well known and much admired by his fellows in the Royal New Zealand Navy. His wife, Mrs. M. Walker, and his two small sons, live at 53, Tainui Road, Devonport.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
