The Cato and the Carter Families from Hertfordshire |
Caroline Carter (nee Cato) and her husband William were living at Wheathampstead in 1871 with their son Moses and granddaughter Ellen Barton. She was a widowed in 1872 in 1881 she was living at Gustard Wood, Wheathampstead
with her four grandchildren; Ellen, Alma, James and Alice Barton. These were children of her daughter Amelia and Michael Barton. At the time of the 1891 she was living at the same address on her own. Her eldest three are nowhere to be found but Alice was back with her father Michael, and his new wife Hannah and their children. Caroline died on 4th April 1891 at Gustard Wood. Noah Cato was living with his mother Ann Cato at the time of the 1871 census at Kimpton. Noah was a bricklayer. He was a witness at Caroline and William's marriage in 1869. He died at the beginning of 1881 aged 69. Shadrack Cato was buried on 18th July 1828 aged 1+ at Kimpton. Sister Amelia and brother George are buried around that time also. Yet, the 1881 clearly has a Shadrack Cato aged 57 lodging at No 8 High St Green Dragon Inn, South Mimms, born at Kimpton. This would mean he was born abt 1824. In 1891, he is an inmate at Barnet Union Workhouse aged 66 and unmarried. I cannot find him in 1871 This Shadrack is believed to the be illigimate son of Sine Cato born abt 1830. William Carter was the son of William Carter, Carpenter and Mary Olds, born on 6th Dec 1807 and baptised at Wheathampstead in Jan 1808. He was an Agricultural labourer and married Caroline Cato, daughter of William Cato, on 17th April, 1841. He died at Gustard Wood on 18th February, 1872. Their eldest daughter Amelia married Michael Barton, (a plumber, born abt 1844 in Cambridge) on 23rd August 1869. They had four children: Ellen Barton b 1870 Wheathamstead Alma Barton b 1873 Wheathampstead James Barton b 1875 Wheathampstead Alice Jane Barton b 1877 Wheathampstead Only Alice, aged 17 is present on the 1891 census of Wheathampstead with her father and his new wife Hannah and five younger children. Their second daughter Ann Marie Carter married John Thomas Dellor, son of Jonathan Dellor and Maria Lingwood on 9th September 1866 at Islington. John Dellor was a butcher. Moses Carter was a gardener and he married Elydia Peacock in 1890 at Luton. They lived at Wheathampstead and he died on 22nd March 1928. There has always been an understanding by Ivy Howard (and her brother, Alfred) that
her grandmother was a Spannish-looking woman called Caroline Cato. She even described her as a white-haired old lady who she used to visit with
her mother Rose, when she was a child. She told us that she had died around 1925 in the Clapton
area. This, of course, led us to believe that Caroline Cato must be the name of Rose's mother, wife of John Thomas Dellor. Having already established that this grandmother did not come from the Howard side, we then found from Rose Dellor's birth certificate, that her mother was Ann Marie Carter. Further investigations proved that John Thomas had never remarried and that his own grandmother was Maria Lingwood (wife of Jonathan Dellor). This remained a mystery for a good few years. Caroline Cato must have existed, but who was she? The clue came by accident, whilst looking at the freeBMD website for possible parents of Ann Marie Carter. We knew from her marriage certificate that her father was William Carter and by looking at any matches for marriages prior to 1844, I up came a match between William Carter and Caroline Cato! Therefore, the mystery lady turned out to be the mother of Ann Marie, and hence, Rose's grandmother and Ivy's great grandmother. Before long, the family tree of the Carter family from Wheathampstead had been established, [thanks also to Arthur Holdford, Columbus, Ohio USA] and his Carter webpage together with the family of Caroline Cato from Kimpton Thanks also Alison Cato I now have further information on the Cato family tree. |
