A COMBINED, ANNOTATED INDEX OF THE BEVERLEY PATENT (1736)

AND THE BORDEN GRANT (1739) OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA.

METHODOLOGY. This alphabetical index of surnames and landmarks

is based upon J. R. Hildebrand's "Beverley Patent" map (1954)

and his "Borden Grant" map (1964). Reproductions of Hilde-

brand's original works were purchased from the History Museum

and Historical Association of Western Virginia, P.O. Box 1904,

Roanoke VA 24008.

The index below gives approximate locations for waterways and other

landmarks identified on the maps, as well as for land parcels belong-

ing to almost 700 freeholders. These lands had been secondarily con-

veyed by original grantees William Beverley and Benjamin Borden, or

by their heirs, to individual owners over the period from 1738 to

1812 -- although the vast majority were assigned before 1776.

In order to integrate location data from both maps into a single

index, a system of one-mile square grids was superimposed on the

maps. Tracing paper was used for the grids, all on a single sheet,

so that exactly the same metric was applied to both maps.

The "beginning point" of the Borden Grant was taken as the origin

(0,0) for the grids of both maps. The north-south axis of the grid

system was oriented along a line of 1840 poles that simultaneously

formed the western border of Beverley Patent and the eastern border

of the Borden Grant.

Distances from the origin are designated as positive numbers for

"North" and as negative numbers for "South" along the north-south

axis, while western distances are negative and eastern distances

are positive along the east-west axis. Therefore, the first grid

square northeast of the origin is designated as (1,1), the first

square southeast of the origin is (-1,1), the first square south-

west is (-1,-1), and the first square northwest is (1,-1).

Each property has been listed under the grid square that appears

to contain the largest percentage of its acreage. A landmark has

normally been listed under the grid square where Hildebrand wrote

its legend, or otherwise in a nearby square thought to be readily

discernible to the reader.

ANNOTATIONS. Explanatory notes have been added for some properties,

mostly where the maps are not clear or where Hildebrand appears

to have made errors. No attempt has yet been made systematically

to locate and correct all errors in Hildebrand's work. Nor do the

notes attempt to include extensive references such as might be

found in Chalkley or in any other sources (primary or secodary).

On the other hand, the document has been formatted so that addi-

tions may be readily accommodated. Therefore readers are invited

and encouraged to send corrections, comments or suggested refer-

PROBLEMS. Hildebrand's maps are thought to be reasonably accurate

with respect to the approximate locations of properties and land-

marks. But although they obviously are the products of immense

work and sincere dedication, they are not accurate in respect to

the scale renderings of many properties.

For example, even a cursory examination will quickly reveal neigh-

boring properties that differ vastly in recorded acreages even

though they appear from the plats as drawn to be roughly equal, and

Many -- if not most -- of these problems probably arose from inaccu-

racies in the original field work rather than from any carelessness

or lack of skill on the part of Hildebrand.

A second major problem regards geographic orientation. For both

maps, the vertical borders appear to differ from "true north" by

a few degrees, while the horizontal borders differ correspondingly

from a true east-west orientation. And on the Beverley map (but

not on th Borden map), Hildebrand's north-pointing arrow appears

to be skewed a few degrees to the east. The approach taken here

to avoid these problems has been to assume that the 1840-pole

survey line mentioned above is accurate as a depiction of true

north.

(This decision was taken in the belief that even though 18th century

surveyors were notorious for their inaccuracies, they were likely

to "get it right" on something so fundamental as a line that was

designated in the original grant documents as running north-south

for a distance of 1840 poles -- equivalent to 5.75 miles.)

A third problem is that the two maps do not "mesh" well at some

spots along their common boundary lines. These discrepancies mean

that some feature common to both maps may differ anywhere from about

0.1 to 0.25 miles.

And a fourth problem is that the scale indicated on the Borden map,

namely one inch equals one mile, has been lost, apparently in the

process of reprinting both maps. Fortunately, however, Hildebrand

drew a linear scale legend on the Beverley map, and it transfers

with reasonable consistency to the Borden map. (The resulting scale

on the reproductions available from the History Museum and Historical

Association of Western Virginia turns out to be approximately 27/32

of an inch per one mile.) As a result, any reader with reprinted ver-

sions of the maps SHOULD NEVER use the mileage equivalency written

on the Borden map.

In spite of these problems (and perhaps others), it seems likely

that Hildebrand's locations are accurate in most cases within about

a half-mile. Therefore it is believed the grid square designations

below are sufficient to give approximate locations for the 700+ pro-

perties and 50+ landmarks indexed below.

The compiler would appreciate comments from readers as to additional

problems, as well as any errors in transcription or interpretation.

POTENTIAL USES. The specific numerical system below was chosen so that

in addition to application as an integrated name index for the Beverly

and Borden maps, the data may be used also for various statistical and

algebraic manipulation. To this end, in addition to the "text" format

below, the data are available upon request in the form of a "Lotus-

compatible" spreadsheet.

As an example of potential uses, an estimated location for an individual

who is not in the index may be computed an average of the grid square

coordinates for his "suspected neighbors" -- as they might be listed in

Chalkley's "Chronicles." Or the straight-line distances between landmarks

indiduals may be estimated by simple algebra. And frequency distributions

may be readily calculated for such characteristics as surnames, given names,

dates of land assignments, and sizes of holdings.

The database also may easily be expanded with, for example, estimated

latitudes and longitudes, or locations for additional landmarks and

holdings in Augusta County that were not within the Beverley and Bor-

den boundaries. Comments from readers as to additional uses will be

appreciated.
