Subject: Col. John Hargreaves

Hello everyone

I have sent the following message previously, but am not sure that it got through. I have not seen it or any replies, so I will try again.

The message was -

> I have been receiving the odd email from this list, but have
> never contributed but this latest train of thought has peaked
> my interest. At last someone has mentioned someone in my
> husband's family.
>
> My husband's g.g.g.g grandfather is James Hargreaves, brother
> of Col. John Hargreaves.
> Their parent's were James Hargreaves (born about 1750?) and
> Esther Heap. James' parents were James Hargreaves (born 1716)
> and Elizabeth Birtwistle. This James' parents were Henry
> Hargreaves (born about 1690) of Newchurch in Rossendale who
> married Jane Hoult.
>
> James Hargreaves (born 1774) married Ann Vavasour but had no
> children. He did, however, father two illegitimate daughters
> (to two different women). One of these daughters is my
> husband's g.g.g. grandmother. Col. John Hargreaves married
> Charlotte Ann Ormerod and they had three children. Eleanor,
> who married Rev. William Thursby and Charlotte who married
> General Sir James Yorke Scarlett. Their son John died at the
> age of 22 years.
>
> James and John inherited properties, including coal mines, from
> their uncle the Rev. John Hargreaves who married Mary Blackmore.
> It is my understanding that the Rev. John Hargreaves originally
> owned Bank Hall. His nephew, John and his wife Ann, lived at
> Bank Hall until their death. It was then occupied by James and
> Charlotte Scarlett. Col. John Hargreaves lived at Ormerod
> House, the home of his wife's family.
>
> My husband's connection to this family is through one of James'
> illegitimate daughters, Elizabeth Haworth.
> She married a Christopher Duxbury and had four children. Their
> eldest child, Alice, is said to have married a John Hardgraves
> (This is the spelling they used when in Australia). I have
> never been able to find this marriage. She had two sons, James
> and Richard and I have also not been able to find records of
> these births. For some reason, her family shipped Alice and
> her two sons out to Australia. James did not marry. Richard
> married and had a large family. For reasons known only to
> themselves, Richard began signing his name as Hargraves. Half
> of his children are called Hardgraves, the others Hargraves.
>
> If anybody has any connections to this family, I would love to
> hear from you.
Cheers
