HE RELENTED.
______
Col. J. T. Gwaltney
Gracefully
Accepts His Son-in-Law.
_______
AND PUTS UP FOR
A BRIDAL TOUR.
______
Big Crowd of Women
and Men Dis-
appointed Because the Habeas
Corpus Didn't Come Off.
Long before
the appointed hour for the Ewing-Gwaltney habeas corpus case
in Judge Smith's court yesterday afternoon, the room was packed
to its last inch of sitting and standing room by eager women
and men who were bound to see how a man would go about getting
his bride out of the hands of her father, if the latter refused
to let him have her, for that was the size of the case.
To restate the case, Mr. Hugh F.
Ewing and Miss Marietta Gwaltney were secretly
married on New Year's day. The father of the bride, Col. John
T. Gwaltney, fired his son-in-law off his premises in Oak Cliff,
and told him not to return, as he should never have his daughter.
Thinking Col. Gwaltney would cool
off and think better of the matter in a little while, Mr. Ewing
concluded his wiser course would be to keep away from his bride
and not make any attempt to get possession of her for a few days.
He tried this scheme until last Friday, when he became convinced
it was no good. So, he applied to Mr. Ross Clark, a lawyer. Mr.
Clark told him he could get his wife for him with very little
trouble. Mr. Ewing told him to proceed. An application for a
writ of habeas corpus was at once filed by Mr. Clark in Judge
Smith's court. Judge Smith set 2 p.m. yesterday to hear it.
At the appointed hour, Mr. Clark
entered the court room without his client, and, to the great
disappointment of the vast crowd, asked permission of the court
to withdraw the suit, as Col. Gwaltney had not only relented,
but had actually given the couple the money to pay their expenses
on an extended bridal tour. This announcement was at first greeted
by the crowd with murmurs of disappointment, which finally broke
into rounds of applause in endorsement of the substantial and
graceful manner in which Col. Gwaltney had yielded.
