1890 Land Allotment

This my attempt to make a first census of the Kickapoo in Kansas. I started with the 1890 Land Allotment Roll.Â My main concern was to placed those Allotees in family form. I did add a few extras. I used the Indian Kickapoo Census http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1059&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 1891-1900 plus the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. They were still coming in 1900 and later and did not get land Allotments and may not appear here. The BOLD numbers appear more than once. Use this as a guide to get started-but do your own research.                 “ Captain Hamilton ‘ an early day Kickapoo Chief.

Through the courtesy of hon. William Elsey Connelly, secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, I have received a letter written written to the secretary of that society 20 years ago by H.L. Stein, giving an account of Captain Hamilton , an Indian. who lived on the Kickapoo reservation when it extended south of Horton , into Atchison County. Mr. Counnelly writes: “ You will observe that there was some question as to whether he was a Kickapoo or an Otoe. Mr. Stein said he was an Otoe. I find the article interlined in brackets ( Kickapoo) so it must be that he was a Kickapoo,” Can Mr. Honnell , or some one else around Horton or the Kickapoo reserve, set us straight in this matter?

Mr. Stein , the author of the letter, is now and inmate of the Rebekah (Odd Fellows) home at Manhattan. For many years he was a well know citizen of Atchison . He has always taken an interest in matters of Indian history, archaeology , geology and kindred subjects, and now , at the advanced age of nearly 80 years, is still actively engaged in studying and collecting along these lines. Mr. Steins letter is given verbatim as follows:

May 12 , 1902

Dear sir:
According to promise I give you the following :

Captain Hamilton:
A famous Indian Chief of the remant tribe of “ Otoes” ( Kickapoos), living with his tribe on the indian reservation with his tribe on the Indian reservation near the town of Muscotah, in Atchison county , State of Kansas . My first acquaintance with the chief was in the fall of 1867 at the general store of Moses Greenbaum at the City of Atchison, where the chief was a frequent patron , along with a goodly following of braves, warriors, bucks, squaws and papooses, while at the same time , the people had a good store at Muscotah (Kennekuk) to trade in, kept by the genial Hon. Geo. Storch, of Atchison.

it seems they then acquired the habit to make their purchases in a lager town, although they could have done equally as well at their own doors. the Captain frequently appeared well mounted on as fine an animal as could be found, and at the same time of which he was very proud, He dressed modestly in a blue uncle Sam captain’s uniform, which by the way he proudly earned , while serving his country during the period of the Civil War- 1861-65. He was intensely patriotic in the glories of the Stars and Stripes , and I doubt if an Indian then living , honored and revered the flag more with such a great and earnest devotion than him. his best friend was Major Badger, of Muscotah, the Indian agent there. these two were looked upon as the Jonathan and David. nothing was transacted without consulting Major Badger, who was looked upon from the chief down to the humblest member as their good pale face father, However, unawares our lusty chief would frequently, when visiting Atchison be want of quenching his irresistible thirst, and according to his own words truly spoken, while in the army and coming in contact with the Caucasian race acquire the drinking habit and which grew second nature upon him. While he wished to put a stop to it, he frequently forgot himself and merely took a little for the “stomach’s sake” and hence an over abundance of the deadly “fire water” .

“ The Captain was a fine looking man past the middle age and well liked by all the white settlers he came in friendly contact with and honored and adored by the members of his tribe. He was also considered a fine judge of horses and as a rule in a horse trade came out ahead.

His friend among the white were quite numerous and the latch string at the doors of his (wigwam) a large frame residence was always open and a cordial welcome given to all that paid him a friendly visit. His family did likewise, to entertain all visitors within their means at hand to make them feel at home, I remember to this day when the captain would come in the store toward evening and ask Mr. Greenbaum to take care of his leather wallet or wampum belt, which as a rule contained quite a goodly sum of money He was wont to call on all of his intimate friends and hardly ever failed to call on his friend Clem Rhohr at the harness shop, and usually left his purchases there for safe keeping, He took a great deal of interest in county, state and national elections: at these times he would be greatly excited, and hoping for a complete success of the Republican party. Republicanism to him was next to a religion and of which latter he was a strict and upright christian. I could not help but admire his many traits in his firmness in dealing and otherwise. On many occasions myself and others listened to his many narratives happened in the past; they were immensely interesting and gave the small audience considerable Indian history, ect : however to the chief’s credit I will add i never knew him to boast, or even referring to himself as being the shadow of a hero.

One thing particularly to his credit is, through his persistent efforts with the members of his tribe he accomplished by inducing them finally to pursue farming, raising cattle and hogs, and at this present time this small tribe is wealthy and their whole community is a wealthy and their whole community is a very flourishing condition, I cannot at present remember the date of demise of this noble red man, Captain Hamilton as a chief was a success after all the good he did for his tribe and I personally honor him ( even in his failings ) as one , a good friend to his white brethren and hence cannot do less to add my little mite, in words of him as a standing momonument for one who helped to make history for the pioneers of Kansas, Peace to his ashes.

From an article written in 1905
The Kickapoos came to Kansas about the time the Iowas and Sacs and Foxes did in 1837. They were also from north west Missouri, the territory of the three tribes extending from the southern limit of the Platte Purchase, along the Missouri river to the northern boundary of the state. They probably numbered about one thousand when they came to Kansas. Authorities differ widely on this as they do on other tribes mentioned. Their principal chiefs were Kennekuk, Wathena and Hamilton. They now number six or seven hundred on their reservation south of Horton in Brown county, and their head chief is Little Simon.
