First Generation

1. HANS BALTHASAR PICKEL was born in 1656 in Hardenburg, Germany.¹ He died in 1703 at the age of 47 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.¹

The data on the early generations of this family was abstracted by John P. Dern from the Lutheran Church records at Bad Durkheim, Germany in 1964. Pfalz Bayern is now the state of Rhineland-Palinate. The German spelling of the name was closer to Beuchel. This was written as Bickel by English speaking colonists in America, and eventually became Pickel or Pickle.

Balthasar was the son of Hans Pickel and his wife Veronica whose surname is unknown. He married Anna Eva Mullier in Bad Durkheim and he died there in 1703 at age 47.

Anna Mullier Pickel's second husband, Mattheus Reinbold, brought Anna and her grown Pickel children to America. They were on Capt. William Newton's ship [listed next to Hans Michel Bickel] in the 5th party in Holland in 1709 [Rotterdam Lists]

According to THE FAITHFUL AND THE BOLD, p.35, early church services of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oldwick, Hunterdon County, NJ, were held in the home of Matthias Reinbold at Nine Mile Run. After Baltes [Johann Balthazar Pickel] married, services were held in his home.

HANS BALTHASAR PICKEL and ANNA EVA MULLIER were married on 22 January 1678 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.² ANNA EVA MULLIER³, daughter of HANS HENRY MULLIER, was born (date unknown).

There is a baptism for an Eva Műllers, 16 Jan 1656, at Wűrttemberg - parents were Hanns & Barbara Műllers - whether or not this is the same lady is unknown. Another Eva Muller was batized 11 Jun 1657 at Saxony - her father Hans Muller.

Anna's second husband brought Anna and her grown Pickel children to America. They were on Capt. William Newton's ship [listed next to Hans Michel Bickel] in the 5th party in Holland in 1709 [Rotterdam Lists]

Matthias Reinbolt Sailed with wife Anna Eva and her children Johan Niclaus Pickel-Pickle (1681-1751 and 3 others, from her first marriage to Han Balthazar (Buechel or Puechel) Pickle (1656-1703) on the sailing ship James & Elizabeth under ship's master Captain Henry Gravener from Palatine holding area near London, England to New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., Province of New Jersey, a British colony, on the Raritan River. They arrived 16 Jun 1710.
It is a reconstructed passenger list based on the first 60 names of the 4 July 1710 subsistence list along with those who appeared to have been part of their housholds. Johann Crist Gerlach, one of those on the list, was the listmaster on the James & Elizabeth, suggesting the most of those on the subsistence list were on that ship. They are listed as the 5th party in Holland and with 4 persons over age 10 (they were actually all probably adults)

HANS BALTHASAR PICKEL and ANNA EVA MULLIER had the following children:

2	i.	Anna Magdalena PICKEL^2,4 was christened on 6 December 1679 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.² Baptism sponsors were Hans Michel Hoffman, butcher from Durkheim, and his wife Anna Magdalena. Anna married between 1698/1706 to Johann Peter Appelman who died in New Jersey in 1745. They were sponsors at Pickel & Reinbold baptisms in New Jersey. PALATINES FAMILIES OF NEW YORK says that Johan Peter Appelman married Anna Magdalena DICKERHOFF on 13 Feb 1700. Anna Magdalena Dickerhofin was baptized on 11 Nov 1677 but no parents are listed. These dates are approximately correct for this to be Anna Magdalena Pickel but she was baptized at Bad Durheim in 1679. The children are given in online records of Anna Magdalena Pickel as the same as the children of Johan Peter Appelman and Anna Magdalena Dickerhoff. Both records have come from a researcher onsite in Germany so I believe someone has transcribed incorrectly - the researcher for the PALATINES book was a German lady highly skilled in transcribing the old German records. Jones does not ever make a link between the Appelmans and the Pickels in Germany and the Appelmans were from Nieder-Ramstadt, not Bad Durheim as the Pickels were. The Applemans are on the Rotterdam Lists - Hans Peter and wife with three children were on Capt Francois Waren's ship at Rotterdam on 3 Jul 1709. The Pickels came on Capt. William Newton's ship. I believe these families were not acquainted with each other until they both lived on the Rariton River in New Jersey. Anna Magdalena Pickel may not have reached adulthood or she may have remained in Germany, but I do not believe she married John Peter Appelman.
3	ii.	Hans Michel PICKEL² was born on 1 June 1681 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.² Birth date is actually the baptism date. Sponsors were Michel Rapp and his wife. Married at Durkheim on 13 Jun 1703 as Johan Michel Buckel, son of deceased Balthasar Bickel. Hans Michel Bickel, wife and 2 children were in the 5th Party from Holland [Rotterdam Lists] in 1709, on Capt William Newton's ship, as were Matheus Reinbold, his wife and 2 children over 10 years of age.

5	iv.	Maria Catharina PICKEL was christened on 30 November 1685 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.² Baptism sponsors of Maria were Margaretha Elisabetha, wife of Hans Michel Rapp, Hans Michel Rapp, and Anna Catharine Bickel, wife of Heinrich Bickel from Seebach.

7	vi.	Johan Conrad PICKEL was born in 1687 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.¹ He died on 11 December 1689 at the age of 2 in Bad Durkheim, Pfalz Bayern, Germany.¹
