Fourth Generation

41. Selethia WALTERS144,145,146,147,148 was born in 1797 in Virginia.145 She died between 1850 and 1860 at the age of 53 in Kentucky.

Selety Walters married Noel Waddell. William Simpson was bondsman. Her father, Robert Walters, gave permission.

A database found online suggested that Selethia died about 1836. I believe instead she was alive at least until after the 1850 census.

The following census records suggest children for Selethia & Noel Waddiell - they are not conclusively proved as being so.

1850. 2nd District, Caldwell Co KY, Hh 469
Noel Waddell, age 54, Farmer, b. VA
Silety, age 48, b. VA.
Mary, age 15, William age 13, Volney age 11, Wilmouth age 9, and Henry age 7, all born VA
John Butler, age 39, b. VA. Jane age 14, b. VA. [This age is probably wrong - this is probably an unidentified daughter who was age 10-15 in 1840.]
From a descendant of this family:
I found a document for the marriage of John Butler and Martha Jane Waddell, on Jan. 17, 1850. She is listed as the daughter of Noel. It was witnessed by Calvin Waddell.

A descendant also believes the following to be still other children:
1850. 1st District, Crittenden Co KY, Hh 236
Marshall Waddell, age 19, b. VA.
Eliza age 22, b. VA. William age 4 b. KY and Frances age 2 b. KY.
They were living in the household of William Redd age 28, b. KY, a wood chopper, along with Samuel McDaniel age 29, b. S.C., William Smith, age 17 and Samuel Smith age 16, b. KY. By 1860, Eliza had married William Redd and her two children had taken his surname.

1850 Census. Caldwell Co KY. 2nd Dist, Hh 380

Wm Redd, age 38, Miller & farmer, b. KY
Elisa age 32, b. VA
Wm age 13 and Mary F. age 11, both b. KY
Anderson "Waddle" age 30, b. Virginia and Wm Waddle age 24, b. KY

Calvin C. Waddle, age 35, farmer, b. VA
Mary R. age 27, b. KY
Robt H. age 6, Elisa H. age 4
Robt. Waddle age 22, b. KY. Henry Waddle age 14, b. KY, Seleta Waddle, age 18 [both Henry & Seleta listed as being in school] [I believe Robert was listed as Volney in 1850; Seleta was most likely Wilmouth - Wilmouth is traditionally a female name in this family. It would appear the parents are deceased.]

Selethia WALTERS and Noel WADDILL were married on 13 November 1817 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.1,35,40 Noel WADDILL149, son of Charles WADDILL and Ann MARSHALL, was born on 28 January 1797 in Virginia.145,149 He died between 1850 and 1860 at the age of 53 in Kentucky.

It is likely that Noel Waddill who married Selethia is the son, or grandson, of a man of the same name.
Online databases suggest a John Waddill born 1720 St. Peters Parish, New Kent Co. His son was a Noel Waddill born 1754 in New Kent who married Elizabeth Carter 1786 in Halifax. One son Charles, was born 9 Jan 1775 in Pittsylvania Co and he married Ann Marshall - they had a son Noel born 28 Jan 1797. But that does not explain the two Noels mentioned in the following deeds, the elder of whom was married to a Martha. Of course "Junior" did not necessarily denote a son of the same name in this time period.

Family research from a Manuscript titled "Genealogical Records of Richardsons and Waddills of Virginia and Kentucky" written by Mrs. Stacy [Pocahontas Hewell Hutchinson] in 1939 has information passed along from letters written in 1902 by Mrs. Mary Waddill of Woodville, McCracken Co KY. She is said to have been a great aunt of Mrs. Stacy and was 88 years old at the time the letters were written. Mary's father was Charles Waddell of Pittsylvania Co VA, son of a Noel Waddill. She gives a birth date of 28 Jan 1797 for Noel and a birth date for his father Charles as 9 Jan 1775.

First record of Waddills found in Pittsylvania Co records:

Charles Waddle 2m -10, 2m 10-16, 1m 16-18, 1m 16-26 [probably same as the 16-18 year old], 1m over 45.
1f -10, 1f 10-16, 1f over 45.
On same page with Archer Walters.

1830 Census. Warren Co KY - A single man named Noel Waddill but he gave his age as 20-30 - not quite old enough for this Noel. Researchers have speculated he went on to Kentucky before bringing his family, but I doubt that. I believe the family was still in Virginia.
Pittsylvania Co VA
Noel Waddell: 2m -5 [Anderson & Calvin] 2m 5-10 [??? & Laban], 1m age 30-40 [Noel]
1f -5 [Eliza], 1f 20-30 [Seletha]
The Noel Waddill in Virginia lived next door to Charles "Waddle", age 60-70 who had no apparent spouse but perhaps 4 children in their late teens, early twenties, still at home - probably his father.
Other neighbors included John "Waters" [Walters] and Spires [Spears] Walters.

Other records from Warren Co support the fact that there was a very different Noel Waddill, as well as possibly an older Charles, in Warren Co. A deed as early as 11 Mar 1806 was witnessed by a Charles "Waddle" in Warren Co - no other deeds for a Waddill of any spelling were in Warren Co 1797 thru 1818. There is a Will in Warren Co, WB D, p.55, dated 7 Oct 1832 of Noel "Waddle" whose wife was Ruth - he referred to his sister Nancy Walters and half-sister Patsy Akin. He apparently had no children. Nancy Walters was the wife of Robert Walters, son of Jackson Walters.

1840 Census. Christian Co KY.
Noel Waddill: 2m under 5 [Robert V. & William], 2m age 5-10 [Marshall & Anderson], 1m 10-15 [Calvin], 1m 15-20 [Laban], 1m 40-50 [Noel]
1f age 5-10 [Mary], 2f 10-15 [Eliza & Martha Jane], 1f 30-40 [Seletha]

In 1850, in Caldwell Co KY, not only was Noel Waddell and family present, but also a James B. Waddill, age 55, born in VA - a likely candidate for a brother or cousin to Noel. James' apparent wife was Louisa A., age 44, also born in VA.
Living with James B. & Lousia were: George H. Crawley, age 25, b. LA, Edna P. Crawley, 17, b. LA, and John R. Jackson, age 9, b. Caldwell Co KY.

1850 Census. Dist 2, Caldwell, KY, Hh 469
Noel Waddell, 54 - household all born in Virginia
Silety, 48
Mary 15. William, 13. Volney, 11. Wilmouth, 9 (marked as male but really was Seletha Wilmouth, a daughter). Henry, 7.
John Butler, 39. Jane Butler, 14 (probably dau Martha Jane who was more like age 24)

Selethia WALTERS and Noel WADDILL had the following children:

From a descendant of this family:
I found a document for the marriage of John Butler and Martha Jane Waddell, on Jan. 17, 1850. She is listed as the daughter of Noel. It was witnessed by Calvin Waddell.

1870. 3rd Prec. Crittendon Co KY, Hh 97

Malinda, 35, b. KY
Children b. KY: Young 14, Henry 11, Samuel 10, Fannie 7, Minta W. 5, Dick age 1.
Anderson Waddell, age 39, b. KY

Anderson is said to have married Mary Jane Reynolds, 20 Oct 1874, Crittendon Co KY.

However, in 1880, I found this A. M. Waddell living in Louisville, Jefferson Co KY and a boarder in what appeared to be a large hotel:
A. M. Waddell, age 50, b. AL, parents born AL - right age but wrong birthplaces.
R. A. Waddell, wife of A. M. W., age 46, b. TN, parents b. TN
Bettie A., age 20, daughter of A.M. W., b. TN

Much is not known about the Waddill family relationships. It is interesting that there was another Anderson - Anderson M. Waddell of Lynchburg, VA. Possibly this Anderson was named for this earlier man.

This is interesting in that the date of this deed is April 31 - there is no such date; the sale also appears to have happened prior to the purchase.

In 1860, William stated he was born in Kentucky. He was living with his sister Eliza and her husband, along with brother Anderson.

He married Mary Jane Hall, 26 Jul 1860, Crittenden Co KY.

Probably listed as Volney in 1850, Robert in 1860 when he was living with his older brother Calvin. The youngest child, Henry is also there - I suspect their parents have died.

Robert married M. L. Montgomery on 14 Apr 1862, Crittenden Co KY

Although this child was listed as a "male" in 1850, I think it most likely it is the Seleta "Waddle", age 18, living with Calvin C. Waddle in 1860. The name Wilmouth is most often used for females, particularly in the Walters family.

Celity Waddle married J. S. Montgomery, 19 Apr 1862, Crittenden Co, KY
