[Samuel would be his brother as there are no nephews named Samuel. Charles was a son of Elijah and a nephew to Moses.]

Moses is said have left Franklin Co by 1808, but he was still buying land on Shoal Creek as late as May of 1816. He received a grant for 1 league and 1 labor at the land office in Nacogdoches, TX, 1835. All his sons are said to have gone to Texas with him. Censuses show some of the grandchildren to have been born in Mississippi so possibly the families were there in between Georgia and Texas.

The Walters book says they moved to Madison Co, MS Territory [AL] in 1812, then Shelby Co AL, then Yazoo Co MS, finally to Smith Co TX.

Robert B. Walters found the following in the 1820 census for Shelby Co AL: George, Moses, & Tillman - all white males over the age of 21. There are land patents to a Moses Walters in Fayette & Tuscaloosa Counties in AL but the dates range from 1839 to 1858 - I would think this is a different man.

Moses Walters' name appears on the Tax Lists of 1837, 1839, 1840 & 1845 for Nacogdoches Co, TX He received land grants #27 & 91 for land in Nacogdoches Co.

From NACOGDOCHES COUNTY FAMILES by the Nacogdoches Co Genealogical Society, VanZandt Co Library, Canton, TX.
Moses Walters Family
Moses Walters, my great grandfather, left Mississippi in December 1835 with seven grown sons and descended on what was then the Department of Nacogdoches, later known as Cherokee County [TX]. His ancestors left Scotland, came to Virginia, then to Georgia where his parents died. His plantation in Mississippi was where the city of Jackson is now located. He came from a family of seven boys. His father, Robert, in his will named them as William, John, Robert, Elijah, Peter, Samuel, and Moses. He also named four daughters; Betsey, Susannah, Hannah, and Mary, none of whom came to Texas as far as the records show.
Moses was born in 1789. [this date not possible] He married Elizabeth Cauthon, daughter of William Cauthon of Franklin Co, GA. They were parents of seven sons: Robert, Wade Hampton, Andrew C., Boly C., Charles Mote, Tillman, & George T. The names of Moses' sisters [daughters?] are unknown but it is understood that they were married and stayed in either Mississippi or Georgia.
Moses received grant #27 for 1 league and 1 labor of land upon condition of paying seven dollars for each labor of irrigable land, five dollars for each labor of arable land and two dollars and forty cents for each labor of pasture land. The town of Sacul is on Moses Walters' Survey.
There are sixteen headrights in Texas in the Walters name. The main headright is in Cherokee County.
Moses is buried with his wife, Elizabeth, in the Starrville Cemetery on the Walters estate at Starrville or at Mt. Pisgah. The marker has been destroyed.

Moses WALTERS and Elizabeth CAWTHON were married in 1789.19 Elizabeth CAWTHON, daughter of William CAWTHON and Rhoda PAYNE, was born about 1773 in Virginia.19 She died about 1840 at the age of 67 in Starrville, Smith County, Texas.19

The Walters book gives Elizabeth Cauthon as a daughter of Charles Cawthon & ??? Wommack in the Cawthon section. [p.48-49] Later in the book is a copy of an article about the Moses Walters Family which appeared in a genie society compilation written by a descendant of Moses & Elizabeth and the article states that Elizabeth was the daughter of William Cawthon [insert bef p.451].

Other show that Elizabeth Cauthon, daughter of William, married John Stringer.

Elizabeth seems a bit too young to a child of Charles & Elizabeth Womack and sister to William - so the jury is still out on her parents.

Moses WALTERS and Elizabeth CAWTHON had the following children:

George is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave in Hood Co TX. there is a book A TEXAS SCRAP-BOOK, written in 1875 by D.W.C. Baker, that lists a George T. Walters, age 80, as a resident of Hood Co TX in 1875.
