Alexander Mackenzie wrote to Donald McLean on several matters involving a loan, and recompense for losing his farm during the Waikato war. These letters indicate that Alexander had removed his family from the Waikato and was supporting them from a distance, implying that he was still in the Waikato. Later, 1861, Alexander indicated to Donald McLean that he intended to move to Otago to try his hand there. A letter dated 1870 shows that he was back in Auckland.
<<It would appear that Julia believed herself to have been abandoned by Alexander. Although she had three children to Frederick she did not marry him being already married to Alexander. When Frederick died suddenly Julia found herself, once again, on her own with a young family to look after. Julia had one further child, this time to Hahnemann Rogers. Upon the death of her first husband in 1895 Julia married Hahnemann. >>
Robert Rex Kershaw remembers that as a young boy living in Whitford he would deliver dinner meals, cooked by his mother, to a Duncan Mackenzie. Robert remembers Duncan as a recluse who lived in a little shack by himself in Whitford.
Frederick William Myers' birth certificate shows that he was registered as Frederick William Mackenzie. This Certificate shows the father as Alexander Mackenzie. Frederick William and his brother Arthur Henry were always referred to as Myers. Julia was married to Alexander Mackenzie until the latter's death in 1895. Julia then married Hahnemann Rogers by whom Julia had had a daughter in 1874. Frederick William Myers, by whom Julia had had three sons (Frederick William Myers 1864, John Myers 1865 and Arthur Henry Myers 1867) had died in 1869. When registering Frederick William Myers birth it would seem that Julia had been asked the question "What is your husband's name?" rather than the more accurate question "What is the name of the child's father?"
