Notes from Ray Koup, Pennsylvania
Jeremiah Koup enlisted in the Army as a Private in Co. A 201st. Regiment Penna. Volunteers. Was enrolled on the 9th day of Aug. 1864 at Harrisburg Pa. under the command of Capt. Harrison W. Miles
In Oct.the fall of 1864 while stationed at Gainsville Va. he came down with piles, rheumatism in limbs and back and partial deafness in both ears. On Oct. 15, 1864 was sent to Regimental Hospital and remained their until Nov. 4 at which time he was transferred to the Third Division U.S.A. General Hospital at Alexandria Va. While at Alexandria he was diagnosed as having a severe attack of Typhoid Fever.
Jeremiah remained in the Hospital until Jan. of 1865 at which time he returned to his Company and remained there until about the middle of June. At this time the scattered Detachments assembled at Harrisburg, Penna. where on the 21st. the Regiment was mustered out of service.
Upon returning home he found it very difficult to work as his occupation was laborer. In his own words," In my opinion I am disabled more than one half for performance of manual labor on an average during said time from my discharge to the present when compared to an able bodied man".
Jeremiah Koup passed away Aug. 1st. 1910 of progressive paralysis.
