1. JOHANN⁴ COBLENZ (PHILIPP³, J. MATHIAS² COBLENZER, J. WILHELM¹ COBLENTZ) was born June 02, 1845 in Weiler, Rhine, Germany, and died April 11, 1909 in Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan Co., WI. He married ELIZABETH STEINBERGER November 13, 1873 in Catholic Church, Weiler, Germany.

Notes for JOHANN COBLENZ:

In Germany, John Koblenz worked as a head porter for the railroad station. The Coblenz family left Germany in 1883 because they heard the streets in America were paved with gold and life was all milk and honey. This was not what they found upon their arrival. They had been invited here by John's sister and her husband, Ambrose and Anna Maria Breckheimer, who had come from Germany earlier and resided on a farm in the Town of Rhine. John found he had to work much harder in America and ended up with less than he did in Germany. John worked as a caretaker at the Schwartz Hotel in the winter and during the summer months he met the trains with a horse drawn wagon carrying the tourists trunks and baggage transporting them to the hotel. Once there, he had to lug these heavy trunks to the respective rooms. Burdie Maurer says, that he worked very hard at this job. Hyldanna and Burdie Maurer remember their Grandpa Koblenz as being a kind man but Grandma Koblenz always seemed a bit more stern. Grandma Koblenz also worked at the Schwartz Hotel and being that their daughter, Elizabeth, (our Mimsie) was the youngest, she had to go with her mom and dad spending a lot of her time in the Schwartz Hotel kitchen with Alma Schwartz. It was here, as Alma's helper, that Mimsie learned to be such a wonderful cook and baker. Note: While viewing the records of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church at Kiel, I found John Coblenz's funeral service recorded there. His is the 1st recorded death on 11th April 1909 and buried 14 April 1909 at age 63 dying of cancer and buried by Fr. R. Kolbe in Town Rhine Cemetery. (Evidently, St. George's at Elkhart Lake did not have a live in pastor yet at this time).

Notes for JOSEPH KOBLENZ:

Joseph Koblenz was buried on Independence Cemetery Plot #3-1510. Joe married May Fink who had two sons from a previous marriage. George and Arthur were very young when their father died of Tuberculosis and they were about five years of age when their Mother, May, married Joseph Koblenz. Their name possibly was Wartell. May was beautiful, red-headed petite woman who did modeling as a profession.

The Coblenz name was changed to Koblenz when they came to Wisconsin.

Joseph was a successful saloon-keeper. The two boys were not adopted by their father, however they used his name, and he was really the only father they ever knew and they couldn't have had a better Dad. George married Marie Kolloch and Arthur married her sister, Frances. George and Marie had three children, George Jr., Catherine and Joseph. George, Jr. married Albina Mijka in Sept. of 1955 and they are now divorced. Catherine married Richard E. Loeb.

Joe died of rectal cancer, myocarditis and benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Notes for WILLIAM JOSEPH YOUNG: On Aug. 6, 1966, the Young family was traveling from Barstow, CA to San Francisco. At Fresno the weather became very foggy and the vehicle struck a utility pole. William's mother was killed and Bill was seriously injured and has since been paralyzed, however he maintains an excellent position in business and manages to live on his own.
