More on the Breckheimer Family

Notes for HEINRICH BRECKHEIMER:
Heinrich's brother Rev. George Breckheimer performed the wedding ceremony of Heinrich Breckheimer and Agnes Conrad Edinger. This was the second marriage for Agnes.

Heinrich had very high ranking job when he worked at the Domkapitels (Geschaftsfuhrer). The Domkapitels is a Catholic Cathedral where the Bishop lives. His brother, Father Georg also lived at the "Domkapitels". Heinrich died at the Faitsberger Hof (today called Schweizerhaus) by Trechtingshausen. Agnes died in Burg Layen.

Napoleon Bonaparte was in power in France during this time, and he brought his army through where Heinrich was working. Heinrich would not dance to the tune of France's or Napoleon's orders so he lost his job and everything he owned at the Domkapitels. His brother bought him Faitsberger Hofes (An Inn and eating place, that hunters used to go to) In 1801 his place had 12 windows and 12 doors, as their tax Heinrich had to pay 47, 2 Francs, and his friend Josef Schmitz's building had 14 windows and 14 doors, and his tax was 69,4 Francs. In those days, they had to pay taxes according to how many windows and doors they had in their building.

Heinrich Breckheimer and his wife Agnes owned Faitsburger Hof . Some Binger Ratsherrn decided to get Heinrich drunk and then bought the Hof from him by getting him to sign it over to them, but they forgot to include the land that the building was standing on. When these men tried to come into the Hof that they thought they had swindled out of Heinrich, Agnes his wife would not let them on the property. In Agnes' later years, she was on her way to church when she slipped and fell on a steep embankment and hit the back of her head, and she was blind for the rest of her life. Faitsburger Hof is on a high hill,
and the roads going to it were not very good either.

Heinrich Breckheimer was the third child of Agnes and Heinrich Breckheimer. He was a Major when Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812. The Czar had dropped his alliance with France, and joined Great Britain against Napoleon. Napolian entered Russia with almost half a million men just before the terrible Russian winter began. He found Moscow deserted, and immediately after his arrival, fires broke out all over the city. He was forced to retreat without adequate clothing or supplies for his troops. Thousands froze to death or starved, and many thousands more were slain or captured by the wild cossacks. Less than 20,000 men lived to cross the Polish frontier. Heinrich put on the clothes of a Russian farmer and was one of the few that got to safety. He learned to sing the following song which he later sang to his children when they sat on his knee:

"Petersburg, die Residenz, die Mussen wir noch nehmen,
Da Brot und Fleisch genug und ein junges Frisches Leben
Auch ein Glas Champagnerwein und einen Schnaps daneben."

Child of AGNES CONRAD and NICHOLAUS EDINGER is:
        i. ANDREA8 EDINGER, b. Abt. 1780.

Children of AGNES CONRAD and HEINRICH BRECKHEIMER are:
ii. MARIA AGNES8 BRECKHEIMER, b. April 27, 1787, Trechtingshausen, Rhine, Germany; d. September 02, 1861, Kempten, Germany; m. AMBROSIUS NEUSESTER, November 01, 1813, Sst. Clements, Trechingshausen, Germany.
iii. GEORG JOSEF BRECKHEIMER, b. October 21, 1789, Trechtingshausen, Rhine, Germany; d. December 07, 1827, Burg Layen; m. CHRISTINA WEINHEIMER, July 13, 1813, Waldalgesheim, Rhine, Germany.

Notes for GEORG JOSEF BRECKHEIMER:
George Josef Breckheimer was born 21 Oct. 1789. He married Christine Weinheimer in Burg Layen when she was 14 years of age. His brother William was born 23 May 1797, he married Margaret Weinheimer (a sister of Christine, who married George.) in Burg Layen. The brothers of Heinrich II married very young to avoid going in the Army and it worked. The Weinheimer's also had a Castle in Burg Layen. There had been a feud between the Breckheimer's and the Weinheimers that was over when the two boys married the two sisters. Father of the bride, Matthias Weinheimer, was born 17 Dec.1771 in Burg Layen, and died 3 Jan. 1810. He was killed in the Bingen Cave. The police looked for the killer for a long time and he was finally found in his own chimney where he went to hide. Evidently he died from suffocation when the fire was lit.

Notes for CHRISTINA WEINHEIMER:
Christina Weinheimer was 14 years old when she married. George did not want to go to war, so he
wanted to get married so that he would not have to go to war, and it worked.
