Prior to forming Sperber Lumber Company in 1982, Gene Sperber was an Independent Logging Contractor. He and his family owned and operated Sperber Lumber Company, Inc. and later formed Bayland Veneer Inc. in 1991. He was Director of Lake States Lumber Association. He loved traveling with his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed flying and spending time at their cottage on Chambers Island. He was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Suamico.

A ten day search for a plane carrying two Wisconsn businessmen ended in a remote area of north central South Dakota when wreckage was discovered in a livestock pond on a ranch. Eugene Sperber Jr., 38, of Little Suamico, and his passenger William Christel, 33, of Reedsville, both apparently died on impact, officials said. They were last seen alive after refueling May 2, in Aberdeen.

Because they planned to hunt bear in western Montana or Idaho, the Civil Air Patrol search ranged across the Great Plains for hundreds of miles. A search plane spotted the wreckage about 11:30 a.m. Thursday on a ranch southwest of McIntosh on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, CAP spokesman Roger Buchholz said.

The six-seater Maule M-7 had struck a stock dam and fell into a pond behind it, Buchholz said. The cause of the crash was unknown. The plane had headed west from Aberdeen toward thunderstorms and fog, officials said. Volunteers from South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana flew more than 150 sorties covering more than 45,000 square miles in the search. Searchers were unsure where to look because Sperber did not file a flight plan. The plane did have an emergency locator beacon. There was a short signal at the time of the crash, but because the plane went down in water it stopped working. The McIntosh area was searched so heavily, because of that signal.
