 Notes for JOHN GEORGE KESTELL:
John George Kestell was born 24 August 1853, the son of Johann Baptist Kastel and Ursula Kreppel/Krebbel/Krippel, in the town of Germantown, Washington County, Wi. He married , Jane Daily, a neighbor girl, about 1880. She died giving birth to their first born son on 12 March, 1881. Jane was born December 20, 1840 at Rochester, New York, the daughter of John and Nancy Daily. She was 40 years old when she died. She was 13 years older then John George. She is buried on Nelson's burial ground, Waukesha, Co.
The 26th of August 1880, John Kastell bought the farm from his mother for $1,000. with the personal. In the 1870 census, the property was valued as follows: 20 acres improved land, 20 acres woods valued at $1500. and $50. worth of machinery: 2 milking cows, 2 working oxen, 5 swine, $100. all livestock; 80 bushels wheat, 20 bushels rye, 10 bushels oats, 10 lbs. wool, 25 bushels peas and beans, 60 bushels Irish potatoes. $10.00 orchard products, 300 lbs. butter, 8 tons hay, $55.00 worth of animals slaughtered; $650.00 estimated value of all farm products. There was also a plow, a spring tooth, and a drag included in the machinery.
On October 3, 1881, there was a land entry between Nancy Daily and John G. Kestell (as he spells his name now) . According to the indenture, Jane, John George's wife, had bought the farm a few years earlier from her mother, but I guess the papers were not made at the time. Jane had died in March and the estate was being settled. Before the death of Johann Baptist Kastel, John George went by the name of 'George", because of the confusion with his father's name. He kept using the name of 'George until the time of his death, even though he had a brother by the name of George.
Eight months after Jane died, John George Kestell married Magdalena Breckheimer, daughter of Ambrose Breckheimer and Anna Maria Koblenz in St. Francis Church in Milwaukee. They were married by Rev. P. Ignatius Ullrich on 15 Nov. 1881. Lena Breckheimer was born 28 June 1855, in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County. She went to Milwaukee to find work as a young girl and that is when she met John George. Magdalena died of Broncho pneumonia following a case of the measles, on the 14 Sept. 1902. She is buried on St. George's Catholic Cemetery in the town of Rhine - just one half mile north from the family homestead.
On the 19th Jan. 1882, John George sold the homestead farm to John Conrath Wiseckel with the personal. He must have gotten the farm back, as on the 15 Oct. 1886, GEORGE John Kestell and wife Magdalena sold the farm to John Tiry (George Kestell was married to Ferdinanda Tiry), and on the same day, 15 Oct. 1886, John Tiry sold the homestead farm to Charles Dallmann of Milwaukee County. Charles Dallmann was married to Christina Kaestel, a sister of John George's.
John George Kestell and his wife Magdalena and family of seven children, lived on the "Daily" farm in Germantown until 9 June 1894, when they bought the farm in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County, from Ambrose Breckheimer and his wife Anna Maria. The Breckheimers were the parents of Magdalena Kestell. They paid 3500.00 for 110 acres of land and all the buildings. Magdalena and smaller children came to Elkhart Lake by train, and the household furniture was moved up by wagons and teams. John G. Kestell III was ten years old at the time. The Breckheimers moved to a house in Elkhart Lake to retire. Ambrose lived until 2 July 1901, and Anna Maria outlived her daughter by a good many years and passed away 16 Jan. 1917.
A few years before John George's death, he was picking apples in the orchard. He used a chair that had posts on the back lean, to climb up into the tree. He slipped and fell from the tree and hit the chair on one of the posts and injured his intestines. He lived for several years, but he was not in good health. He died 31 Jan. 1905. He is buried beside his wife on St. George's Cemetery in the town of Rhine, just one half mile north of the farm
Anna and John were the only ones who were over 21 years of age when their father and mother were both dead. Anna had just married the September before her father's death. Francis Williams was appointed guardian of Julius, Charles, Arthur, Margaret and Catherine. Katie was 10 years of age when her mother died and just 13 when her father died. She was the youngest in the family. John had just signed papers with his father on his 21st birthday to take over running of the farm. When Julius was 21, he went into partnership with John. The 5th of October 1905, John George III bought 26 acres from Julia Feldmann and her husband John for $1000.00. Now the farm was 136 acres total. John George III also bought the personal property from his father before his death. He borrowed the money from his grandmother Breckheimer.

Charles Kestell left home as a young man and was not heard from for many years. He married Evangeline around 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. When he was close to retirement, they moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where they both died - Charles died in 1956 or 1957, and Evangeline died 25 Aug. 1964.
They had no children.

Anna Kestell married Nicholas Franzen of Marytown 6 Sept. 1904 at St. George's Catholic Church at Elkhart Lake, WI., by Rev. Schmitz of Kiel. They had a reception at the home of her father and then went to Milwaukee for a few days for their honeymoon. They had one daughter Mary, who was an epileptic who could not talk after the age of four years. Anna died 5 Mar. 1938 of intestinal Cancer and her daughter died a few months later - 11 June 1938.

Notes for MARY FRANZEN:
Mary was born a normal baby, but while her mother was seriously sick, Mary also became sick and suffered brain damage from the serious illness. She could not talk as an adult. nor could she do much for herself. She died of pneumonia and Epilepsy. Her mother died of cancer the year before her death.

Julius Kestell was born in the town of Germantown, Washington Co., 22 September 1885 . He married Martha Nauth 27 Oct. 1914 in the town of Rhine. After John and Elizabeth married, Julius left the partnership in the farm, and had his brother Arthur Kestell build him a new home in Elkhart Lake. He worked at the Farmers Mercantile Co. until it went out of business. After that, he was the school janitor for many years in Elkhart Lake. Julius died 20 February 1956 of Prostate Cancer. Martha was born 7 Nov. 1886 in the town of Rhine. She died of a heart attack 26 May 1953 at her home in Elkhart Lake. They are both buried on St.John's cemetery east of Elkhart Lake.

Notes for WALLACE M. KESTELL:
Wallace had a heart problem for several years before his death. Wallace was known in Elkhart Lake as a kind and gentle man, always willing to help when needed. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942-1945.
He was employed as a heavy equipment operator at Crystal Lake Sand and Gravel for over 40 years, until retiring. The Mass of Christian burial was held at St. George Catholic Church, Elkhart Lake, WI at 7 pm on Feb. 3, 2000.

Arthur Kestell was a carpenter contractor and built many houses and other buildings in the Elkhart Lake, Kiel, and New Holstein areas. He built his first home for himself in Elkhart around the time of his marriage. The first four children were born while they lived at Elkhart Lake, WI. which was about 10 years. They then moved to New Holstein where Art built his second home After the death of Anna Kestell, Arthur tried to run the home with hired help for a time. When that didn't work anymore, Arthur put some of the smaller children in a Catholic boarding school for a few years. Then 13 September 1930, Arthur married Sarah Broder who was a school teacher in New Holstein. Arthur and Sarah had three children: Charles, Patricia, and Mary. Patricia died at about six months from whooping cough. They are both buried at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery

James Kestell studied for the Priesthood at St. Lawrence Friary, Mt. Calvary, WI. He entered religious life on 31 Aug. 1941. He was ordained a Catholic Priest 3 June 1949, and said his first Mass at Holy Rosary, New Holstein, WI. He had Cancer of the throat for several years before his death.
Fr. Barth also attended the University of Washington D.C. and the School of Architecture, and served for over 18 years in the missionary, part of that time in the country of Bahrain, Arabia.
He was known for his wooden inlays, and also for his puppet 'Oscar'. He was assigned to Vicariate Apostolic of Arabia, Dec. 22, 1964. He came back to Mt. Calvary in 1988, and never returned to Arabia because of his health.

Notes for CATHERINE KESTELL:
As a young woman, Katherine Kestell worked at Menominee Falls at the Telephone Company as a phone operator. During this period of time, Catherine lived with Mr. & Mrs. John Dexheimer. Frank Meyer worked as a cheese maker for Louis Riesch from Slinger. Frank and Catherine met through the Reisch's and Dexheimer's who were good friends. They had the two girls: Helen and Virginia. When Virginia was a few months old, Catherine was in need of an operation. When the doctors operated, they left some gause or instrument inside of her and she died of an infection. The two girls were raised by an uncle an aunt of theirs, Michael and Anna Meyer, who had no children of their own. Catherine died 16 Nov. 1921, and is buried on St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Slinger, WI. Frank remarried later on and died 7 Oct. 1973.

Notes for MELROY NICHOLAS KESTELL:
On October 21 1936, Melroy married Helen Gahagan at St. Ann Catholic Church, St. Ann. They had a wedding reception at the home of the bride's mother in the township of St. Ann, and then had a Wedding dance at Rhine Center. Howard Kraemer and his band played for the dance. Melroy and Helen lived in an apartment at Kiel for a short time while Melroy worked at Kiel. Then they went to work for a farmer for a year or so before they bought a farm in the town of Rhine. The summer of 1942, Melroy broke his leg while cutting hay and was unable to do his work so they had a hired man for about six months. In 1947, they sold the farm in the town of Rhine and bought a larger farm on county trunk 'N' in the town of Lyndon, Sheboygan County - near Waldo, WI. In March of 1958, Melroy was in a serious car accident that took his life. He died 15 March 1958, about 10 days after the accident. He is buried on St. Mary's Cemetery in Cascade, WI. They had eleven living children, the youngest about two years of age at the time of Melroy's death.

Helen raised her large family by herself after Melroy's untimely early death. She had lots of hard struggles, including having the barn burn down. She had the barn rebuilt so that she could keep farming with the children as that was her means of support.

Notes for DIANE M. KESTELL:
Diane was injured in a farm accident and injured her foot. Dr. Brickbauer from Plymouth forgot to give her a Tetanus shot and she died from Lock Jaw about 10 days later. The injury was not that severe, but the Tetanus germ got into it.

The wedding reception was held at the home of the bride's mother and the wedding dance was held at Cedar Lake Pavilion with Marvin Brouchoud's orchestra in the evening. They went to Kenosha for a few days honeymoon. They worked for several farmers the first years of their marriage, then Edward got a job with the Asplundth Tree Trimmers, clearing the electric power lines in the area. Then the war years were upon us and Edward was put in class 'A' until he would get a job that was essential to the war effort- like food or shipbuilding, or making ammunition. He took a job at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for a few months, but didn't like working inside, so he quit and went to Elkhart Lake Canning Co. for a few years, during this time they lived in Elkhart Lake. By February 1947 they were on a farm that they purchased with all personal property. They lived on this farm for the next twenty six years. It was then sold to Charles Wilson and family. Edward and Helen Kautzer moved to Cleveland, Wisconsin to retire
November 15, 1972.

Evelyn Kestell and Raymond Thompson Archer were married on the 27 July 1940 at St. George's Catholic Church at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Evelyn and Ray worked at Kohler, Ray for 19 years, and Evelyn for 25 years. They had three children, Lana, Carol, and James. Ray died with a heart attack on September 30, 1981, and is buried at St. Patricks Cemetery at Adell, WI. Evelyn contracted Parkinsons later in life.

Raymond Archer was born in Belgrade, Minnesota on the 23 April 1910 to Martin Thompson, and Hazel Lawrence. His father passed away when the older children in the family were quite young. Leland Kestell was killed in an auto accident near his home in Indio, CA. He was 39 years old. It is believed that Leland Kestell was on his way home from Termo, CA where he was employed. He was alone in the car and was reported instantly killed. The last three years he had been employed in the aeronautics division of a firm at Termo.
After serving several years in the Seabees, he worked for the Lauer Paint Co. He then attended an aeronautics school in Madison and worked for three years for an air line in Green Bay. He worked at Denver, Co., and Walla Walla, WA. before going to California.
