Obediah Nevils was born in South Carolina about 1773. He married Elizabeth Gardner with whom he had the following children: Robert, b.1799; George, b. 1803; Obediah, b. 1805; Tabitha, b. 1807; James Jefferson, b. 1809; Nancy, b. 1811; and Hartwell D, b. 1814. Most of all these children remained around what is Barnwell County. The five brothers: Robert, George, Obediah, James and Hartwell, all had sizeable families and farms of their own.
