Doris was raised in the Bushwick section of brooklyn along with her brothers and her sister. They lived at 358 Chauncy St. in the same apartment house that Jackie Gleason lived in. Doris knew him and her best friend Julie Dennahey was Gleason's first girl friend. She met Eugene Patrick Keegan there because he lived nearby at 2001 Fulton St.
Doris married Gene around 1936. They moved to Detroit where he worked for the Chrysler Corp. They lived at 528 Woodland Ave, Detroit when I was born in 1938. They moved back to New York where my brother Donald was born in 1939 and got divorced before the start of the second world war. She married Charles Winterwerb in 1944 and moved to the East New York section of Brooklyn where my sister Patricia was born in 1945. Charles passed away in 1964 of a heart ailment. Doris married Anthony (Doc) Ambrosio and moved to Florida.
She was a great person and she loved to dance. She could really do the Lindy. I loved dancing with her and did so many times. She enjoyed dancing with me too.
She lived in Ft, Myers, Florida because her brother and her mother moved there. When she first moved there she lived in a double wide trailer in North Ft. Myers. She sold the trailer and rented at Richardson Arms, near the Edison Mall. She bought a condo at The Towers and lived there for quite a while. Her husband, Anthony (Doc) Ambrosio died so she sold the condo and moved to an apartment up near the river where she died in Aug of 2000. I loved her and I miss her very much.

Individual Note: Gertrude Mabel Alleyne came to the USA when she was 18 years old from Bridgetown, Barbados, British West Indies. She did not like the name Gertrude so she used Mabel as her first name. Her friends called her Mae. She arrived via the S.S. Verdi on July 5, 1913 with her Mother Etheline (Ethalind Augsta as it appears on LDS) Augusta Edwards. Augusta gave her age then as 50 but she was actually 57. Mabel worked as a printer and usually was the janitor in the apartment she rented. She also worked for a time for Harry Houdini, the famous magician and escape artist.
One of her addresses was 358 Chauncey St. which was in the same apartment house and next door to Jackie Gleason's apartment. Doris, my mother, Mabels daughter knew Jackie. Doris's best friend, Julie Dennehy was Gleason's first girl friend. Gleason was a famous comedian from the 1950's to 1990's. My father Eugene P Keegan was a good friend of Gleason's also. They may have been in reform school together.
I don't know how Mabel met Scotty Henderson because she originally lived in Valley Cottage NY with her sister, Clementina Hamblin. When Mabel married Scotty they both lived in Brooklyn, so they may have met on a street car. Mabel divorced William and married Pawson Culley around 1940. They bought a house at 8 Carole Ave., New Hyde Park and lived there from Abt 1946 to 1956 where I spent the summers from about 1947 to around 1953. Then they moved to Florida after a short stay in Centerreach, LI, NY. In Florida they lived at 7 Camelia Dr, Ormond By The Sea, FL and then Ft. Myers, FL where she died in 1978. When she lived in Ormond by the Sea, I was working temporarily at the Daytona News and was able to see her very often. I took her and Bill to dinner many times and I took her to the dog track which she had never been before. She won a few dollars and I remember her remarking, "This is easy". She loved to cook and I had some really great meals there with them during the 3 months I worked at the Daytona News in Daytona Beach which was just down the road from Ormond Beach. She said that she was related to Florence Nightingale in some of our conversations we had on the numerous evenings I spent visiting her.
I was driving a rented brand new Thunderbird converible while I was there and we took many drives in it. Bill was very impressed with that car as I was. She loved to travel and went to Barbados numerous times and loved to cruise the islands of the West Indies. I miss her very much. Mabel loved to bake pies and cakes. She made the best pumpkin and mince pies around.
Mabel Culley is buried with her son Harold Henderson in Evergreen Cemetery, #3262 Redemption section on Bushwick Ave in Brooklyn. She has two other children, Calvin who died at age 4 months in 1927 and Ina Rita who died at 9 years in 1932 that are buried nearby at #3875 Siloam without a gravestone. She was a wonderful, generous and loving person. I loved her very much. I will always miss her.
