Robert Kirkman was born in Nottingham. England Oct. 20, 1844 and came to America at the age of 4 years. At the age of 18 years he enlisted in Co I, 38th O.V.I. , Jan 27 1864 and was mustered out at the end of the war July12, 1865.

He was a good boy, having the care of an aged father and mother, and his age at the breaking out of the war prevented him from enlisting. But when President Lincoln in '64 called for 300,000 more men, this lad of a boy heeded his adopted country's call and went forth to battle for the right. He was a man of strong personality and made friend where ordinary men would have failed, and his officers soon discovered in him a soldier well adapted to look after and care for the sick and wounded., and he was detailed for hospital duty where he filled the post of hospital steward to the satisfaction of hundreds that came in contact with him.

At the close of the war he took up the work of a citizen where he had laid it down, and his early training began to bear fruit. He remained on the farm until long after the death of his mother, when he made Delta his home until death.
