The letter EARLY SCHOOL PHOTOS, FULTON COUNTY, OHIO

Brailey School, Swan Creek Township
Fulton County, Ohio
School year 1922

Bailey School 1922

Came across an old Brailey School 1922 class photo that my grandmother Regina WALES (later married to Favorite) was the teacher. Brailey School was on the NE corner of Co Rd EF and Co Rd 4, where Charles Leininger lives just 1 mile west of where the ghost town of Brailey is on Co. Rd. 3. Somewhere, I think, my mother has the names of the pupils, for now all I know is that Pyson and Virgil BIXLER are in the class.

Villiage of Bailey, Ohio

This is a picture of the village of Brailey around 1900 but the school was not in the village.

My great grand Uncle Paul WALES is the young boy with the hat standing on the right behind the seed drill with the wooden wheel leaning against it. Paul was born 1893 and was the son of Henry WALES and Nellie Meintzer. Paul's grandfather was the Reverand Oscar WALES, a universalist minister that preached at both the Brailey Union church and the Universalist church in Lyons.

I have the Reverand Wales photo and his son Henry on my Wilcoxsen Wales family webpages at URL: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ohfulton/WalesWilcoxenMeintzer.html

Nellie MEINTZER and her family pics including Henry and their children are at URL: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ohfulton/MeintzerFamilyReunion.html

Utah school was located at the NW corner of Co Rd 4 and Airport Hwy. There is house there now but most, if not all of original school was torn down when it was remodeled. When they remodeled it they were not aloowed to build as close to the road unless some of the original structure was maitained. So there is a wall/corner of the new structure that has the old school incorporated within its structure.

Blake school was at the SE corner of Co Rd EF and Co Rd 6, no longer there.

Raker School was at the NE corner of Co Rd D and Co Rd 6 and is a home now.

Lutz School was at the SE Corner 4 of Co Rd and Co Rd D, It was a home for many year but was torn down a few years ago and a new home now sits on the lot. On the float Hilda Meridew is the representative from Lutz School. Hilda married to Richard MATTIN and was the mother of the Delta Dentist Steve MATTIN. Steve's son is Doctor Mike Mattin and ironically Dr Mattin built a large new home right across the road from where Lutz School used to be.

Wagoner School was at the SW Corner of Co Rd B and Co Rd 6, I think it is still there?

Red School was on NW Corner Co 2 and Co Rd EF, last I knew there was still a home on that corner that was made from the old school. My Great Great Grand Aunt Regina Meintzer (later Kuhlman) taught there when she first started teaching back in the 1890's. She was born in 1876 and lived till 1881 to age 105.

Charlie,
(Below:) I come across an old 1920-21 souvenir Brailey school booklet with a list of pupils. Mildred Montgomery was the teacher that year and it has a photo of her, I believe she became Mrs. Mildred HINES. I had her for my second grade teacher. Here are the pages of the whole booklet. Some of these pupils may have still been around in 1922 and in the pic I sent.

Ethelyn Leininger 9/1 is on the list of pupils. She is probably the one born in about 1914 in Ohio and is the daughter of Ernest Leininger 8/3 and Anna Luthy. The link is to my Leininger web site page that includes Ethelyn.

Here is a 1937 Corn Festival float that show the Swan Creek Twp schools and their representative that year. Lutz, Utah, Wagoner, Raker, Brailey and Blake schools. My mother was/is Ruth Favorite now Richter.

My mother attended it in her early school years and can tell exactly where it was. She knows where the Swan Creek Twp one room school houses were and has told me many times over the years but right now I am not sure of Brailey. My mother's parents used clean the school houses each summer so they were ready to go in fall so she can tell you where they all were in that township. I have some info on several of the other schools, I need to dig it up and see how many I can locate. I know there is a group of women working on a history of the Fulton County Schools as last year at the fair they had a booth and list of all known one room schools and pics and info on many.
