Annual Meeting May 3, 2014 After dinner Harriet thanked all who helped with the dinner, our janitor, and the decorating crew. She then thanked our entertainment for coming. Duane Elliott, the Vice President, talked for a time about the people at the head table. He gave us a hard time and then went on to tease others in Alumni. He talked about different guests and told some old stories he remembered from younger days. He introduced the John Galbraith Singers and Band. After the entertainment ended, Mr. Wyse, Superintendent of Evergreen Schools, talked and told us of the improvements that were made to the school this year. President then spoke and introduced the band teacher, Mr. Lloyd Lewis, Principal Paul Cothrel, and another teacher Janet Cothrel. She thanked Lois Bernholtz and Karen Hess for decorating and Beroske Greenhouse for donating the flowers. The honored classes spoke a few words next. Joyce Putman Williams talked for the Class of 1944. Mike Puppos spoke for the Class of 1954. He traveled 2800 miles to come this night. There were 10 in his class. Galen �Ice� Krieger spoke for his class of 1964. He is a Retired Deputy Sheriff. A motion was made to accept the 2013 minutes by Jim Foster. This was seconded by Penny Burkey Reder. It was voted on and approved. A motion was made by Jack Hoffman to accept Treasurer's Report and Galen Krieger seconded the motion. All was approved. Harriet Ruffner Cunningham nominated Karen Leininger Hess for Vice President. John Puppos seconded the motion and it was approved. Delpha Barnes Smith made a motion for a two-year term for President and Vice President. Jackie Spengler Bettinger seconded the motion and motion passed. Karen Hess will be Vice President for 2015 and 2016. Duane Elliott will be President for 2015 and 2016. George Shaver gave the benediction for the 2014 year and the evening ended. One trip to see the changes in areas where Bill had served in World War II. After Bill's death, I traveled with family and friends to Paris, Rome and points of interest in the US. I am one of the class that went all 12 years to Fulton School. My 9 siblings all graduated from Fulton School. I liked being part of a small school. I married a classmate Bob Carter. We have 5 daughters, 12 grandchildren (9 being girls), and 5 great grand- children. I was a stay at home mom. Later in life, I was a waitress, factory worker, cashier, and did home health care. I had a Delta address most of my life, except when I went to be with Bob when he was in the Army. God really blessed us through the years. We were able to serve Him doing mission work for 10 years in the winter. It is a blessing just to get away from the snow and cold weather. We are active members of Shiloh Christian Union Church. I'm not the cook I used to be, but our daughters do a real good job of it. We are also blessed with 5 wonderful son-in-laws. Now we spend our winters in Florida. I enjoy playing cards, shuffleboard and going to the pool. Robert Carter, Delta, OH My family moved to Ai in 1950. I started at Fulton in 8th Grade. I went to Swanton before that. I liked playing basketball and baseball. I married a classmate, Betty Snyder, in 1957. I served in the Army at Fort Knox, Ky. in 1957-1959, in the Military Police. When I returned home, I went back to work at Toledo Scale. Then, I worked 5 years at the Chevy Plant. I went to United Parcel Service in 1964 sorting packages in Wauseon. Then went full time in 1965. There I started by washing and fueling trucks, short runs in Ohio, delivering packages in Ottawa Hills, driving semis, then to double 40's, ending pulling triples on the Ohio Turnpike to Chicago. I retired in 1998 from UPS. I then went to work for M & W Excavating for 9 years. We joined RVICS in 2000, Roving Volunteers in Christ Service. We traveled in a 5th wheel camper. We did this for 10 years, during the winter months. We worked in Florida for 7 years, 2 years in Texas and 1 year in Arizona. God really blessed us through this mission service. In 2011, we bought a home in Frostproof, Florida, where we now spend our winters. I like to play cards, shuffleboard and golf. Hal Fetterman, Toledo, OH Occupation: Entrepreneur Family: Spouse: Susan Wood - two children Christa, Saline, MI and Page near Columbus, OH Hobbies: Fishing Virginia Vasko McElheney, Toledo, OH Occupation: Before I retired I spent 14 years for the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities as a Habilitation Specialist. I wrote and implemented Individual Plans for Developmentally Disabled Adults, in units of 8 or 10, who learned and worked together at the Telegraph facility. For the last 4 years I have been State certified to be an Individual Provider, as such. I provided assistance for 4 adults to go to Movies, sporting events, including Mud Hens and Walleye games, and get to their medical appointments. Family: Four Children - Julie who lives in Chicago; the rest, Joanne, Jeanine, and Bill/Allison are in the Toledo area. I have one Grandson, Charlie, who is eight and plays soccer and baseball, so I attend lots of games. Hobbies: I spend time going back and forth to Chicago. I also enjoy painting, knitting, drawing crocheting, all kinds of crafts and listening and playing music. For my next career: Who knows? Maybe the �Great American Novel� or the next Grandma Moses!! There I worked as a bookkeeper, teller, then branch supervisor. That is where I met my husband, Fred. We married in 1959. I took time off to have three daughters, Kathryn, Karen and Kristine. They attended Evergreen schools and all went on to higher education. We have been blessed with seven grand- children and six great-grandchildren. All of our family brings us much pride and joy. In 1978, I began a new career at The University of Toledo as a secretary until my retirement in 1997. Fred and I enjoy volunteer work, time with family and friends, traveling, etc. A travel highlight was visiting Switzerland and France, home to our ancestors. Family: My husband, Wayne Short is a retired school teacher and retired farmer of his home place located south of Delta. We are finally grandparents! Our son , Eric and his wife, Becky have a 16 month old son, Luke. They live in Strongsville, OH. Our son, Kent, and his wife Katie, have 5 month old twins, a girl, Paisley, and a boy Xavier. They live near Evansville, IN. Eric, also has two young adult stepchildren, Ryan and Tori. We now have 5 grandchildren that we adore. Eric is a professional surveyor and his wife is a physical therapist. Kent is a district manager (5 states) to paper mills for the Nalco Chemical Co. and his wife is an elemen- tary school teacher. Hobbies Since retirement we have traveled to the Holy Land, Germany to see the Passion Play and other European countries, Hawaii, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand. Also, I have been involved every year in our church children programs. I currently teach 3rd graders on Wednesday evenings. We are, also, co-chairmen on the funeral dinner committee at church. I volunteer every Monday at the Adult Day Center in Delta, and I have tutored people who are working towards getting their G.E.D. I enjoy going to musicals, attending annual doll show and craft shows, visiting friends in nursing homes, �dabble� in flower gardening, and reading Christian novels (when I have time) and of course and foremost, visiting our grandchildren. Arlene Cook Stoup & Robert Stoup, Swanton, OH Occupation: Arlene retired as school secretary from Fulton Elementary/Evergreen. Bob roofed, worked at Meilink and retired from Pilliods. Family: Bob & Arlene have been married 58 years - Two children. Dawn Wilcoxon is discipline secretary at Penta Career and her husband is Kyle. Kyle Wilcoxon - 20 year Navy retiree, and is Cook at Fulton Co. Senior Center.They live in Wauseon, Ohio. Brian Stoup works at Loma Lindas after having also served in the Navy. His wife works at Whitacare Logistics. Grandsons: Dereck Stoup teaches in Washington Local. Next year he will be teaching at Whitmire H.S. where Bob's sister graduated from in 1943. He will be married in August. Nicolas Wilcoxon is working at Sauders and will be attending Hocking College in the fall in wild life management. Taylor Wilcoxon is a Junior at Wauseon H.S. He is very active in Band, plays French horn, cello, trombone and trumpet. Has a varsity letter in Tennis and Wrestling. Marc Yeager lives in Florida and is an accountant - a Star Bucks manager. Bart Yeager lives in Delta and has an 18 month old son. Hobbies: For many years we have enjoyed camping, bowling, gardening, cutting/ splitting and burning wood, our church and family etc. Arlene just retired after being a 4-H Advisor for 60 years. Bob was an Advisor for 20 years. We have done some traveling and going on bus trips. Our class has been very �close-knit� for the ones who live in this area. We moved back to Maumee after retirement. Since 2010, I work part-time as the H.R.Director for the Toledo Lucas County Health Department. Family: My spouse is Cheryl. We just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We have three wonderful children: Chad who lives in Maumee, Alisa who lives in Columbus, and Todd, who lives in Chicago. OTHER NEWS Ruth Snyder Griffin, (class of 1953). Ruth still has cancer (Multiple Myeloma) and has been a resident at the Orchards of Northcrest, Napoleon, Ohio for over twenty months. She receives chemo treatments once every other week. She is able to get out, goes by car to church and appointments. Most or all of the class members are 80 this year. Joyce Frybarger Raymond: (class of 1958). Sorry, my husband and I will not be able to attend the banquet this year. We are sending the $15.00 to help with expenses. We are both in good health for which we are grateful. Our families are well and the 9 grandchildren keep us busy. Two of them are married but no great grandchildren yet. Gary E. Hable, 70, of Greensboro, N.C. passed away May 13, 2014 at Moses Cone Hospital after a brief illness. Gary was vice president and sales representative for Pilliod Furniture for 33 years, until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, a daughter Tiffany Hable, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola and Walter E. Hable ('32). Marie May Barlow, 85, passed away May 16, 2014 at Swanton Valley & Rehabilitation Center. She was a homemaker raising 5 children, and a member of Brailey Union Church. May is survived by her sons, Gary Barlow and Ronald Barlow, both of Florida; daughters Patricia (Terry) Shidler and Nancy (Norman) Self, both of Swanton, OH; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. May was preceded in death by her parents; son Kenneth Barlow; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Ronald Bryce Keough, 51, of Swanton, passed away unexpectedly in his home on July 8, 2014. He was the son of Verna Mae (Bratton) (class of '48) and Bryce Keough. He was a graduate of Springfield High School and worked as a Union Carpenter. He is survived by his mother; children Sarah (Steve) SanMiguel, Haley Keough, Olivia Keough, Simon Keough, Veronica Keough and 6 grandchildren; and his siblings Sandra, Sharon, Steve, Kathleen, Darlene, Nancy and Christine. Lorina Arps, 102, of Delta passed away July 11, 2014 at the Elizabeth Scott Care Center. She married Eldon Arps and he preceded her in death in 2000. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Delta. Lorina spent many days volunteering at church and cooking Rotary dinners. She was a talented cook and made delicious pies! Surviving are her children; Phillip Arps (class of 1958), Barbara A. Churchill (class of 1960), Mary (Tom) Thompson (class of 1968); 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her children, Stephen Arps (class of 1963), David Arps (class of 1965) and Rosemarie Arps. James W. Foster, 73, of Defiance (class of '60) passed away August 2, 2014 at Toledo Hospital. He was a graduate of Fulton High School and married Rose Marie Wells in 1974. He retired from GM Central Foundry in 2000, where he worked as an Iron Pouring Operator. He was a member of UAW Union 211, Defiance Veteran Motor Car Club, Edsel Club, Defiance Hospital Auxiliary and Silver King Tractor Club. He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons, James Ray & Charles Victor; brother Ray (Linda) Foster; 2 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor ('32) and Emma June Foster; two infant sons, David & Scott Foster. He enjoyed touring with his antique cars, restoring tractors, and playing �Santa�. Ruth Shipman Schoonover, 93, (class of 1939) of Adrian passed away August 25, 2014. Ruth was one of 14 children of Sidney and Bertha (Apple) Shipman. After graduating from Fulton High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from Central Missouri State & a Master's Degree from Michigan State University. Ruth married Rev. Modie Schoonover in 1940, and she retired from Madison Schools where she taught business courses for many years. She is survived by her siblings, June Balentine, Marjory Clark, Freda Morgan, Don Shipman, & Phillip Shipman. Mary Lou Walbolt, 88, passed away September 19, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital. In 1947 she married William Walbolt, and he preceded her in death in 1999. Mary Lou started her career as a hairdresser. They owned the Whirlwind Restaurant in Grand Rapids, and she assisted her husband on the family farm (she drove the tractor), and was a cook at the Barn Restaurant. She retired from Evergreen High School in 1987 where she was head cook for over 20 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children; Susan Tousel (class of 1967) (Tom Brooks), Theodore (Diane) Walbolt, LuAnn Swick, Patricia Hartman, and Reed (Corey) Walbolt; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mary Lou was also a member of Swanton VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #8598. Bernadine Krieger Overmyer, 86, (class of '46) passed away at Swanton Health Care on November 1, 2014. She married Ronald Overmyer on December 10, 1948, and he preceded her in death. Bernadine drove school buses for over 30 years for Fulton School and Evergreen Public Schools. Her fondest hobby was tending to the family farm. Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Ralph Krieger, Jr. She is survived by her children, Carl (Claudia) Overmyer, Dennis (Deborah) Overmyer and Shirley (David) Willson; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Darryl Langenderfer, 67, passed away on November 17, 2014 after a long illness. He married Debra Habel (class of 1968). Darryl is survived by his wife and children; Darryl, Andria, Wendy, Dustin and 3 grandchildren, Andrew, Kyle, and Chyna. Doris Saeger Sharples, 93, (class of 1939) passed away November 25, 2014 at Legacy Assisted Living Center in Jackson, Michigan. She graduated from Fulton Centralized High School, and attended Davis Business College. Doris married D. Morrill Sharples and the marriage lasted 60 years. She was an office manager and bookkeeper for Odland Iron Works for thirty years, and enjoyed traveling following retirement . Morrill preceded her in death, and to this union they had three children, Aneita K. (John) Radov, D. Kent (Linda) Sharples and Doryl M. (James) Hodgins. Doris also leaves 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with another due soon. Grace R. Gillen, 95, of Toledo, Ohio entered into eternal life, on Dec. 3, 2014, at the Elizabeth Scott Community. She married Cletus Gillen in 1939 and was a homemaker and devoted mother to her eleven children. She was a long time parishioner of St. Richard Catholic Parish, and member of the Rosary & Altar Society. Grace will be greatly missed by her children, Barbara ('57) (David) Vrooman, Daniel ('60) (Mary) Gillen, Roger ('61) Gillen, Joseph ('63) (Nancy) Gillen, Gene ('64) (Sue) Gillen, Tom ('66) Gillen, Roy ('68) (Connie) Gillen, Timothy Gillen, Sue (Mark) Moser, Mark (Janet) Gillen and Jeffrey (Cindy) Gillen; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her husband; parents, 7 siblings; and two grandchildren. James W. Carroll, 80, (class of 1952) passed away Dec. 8, 2014 at Defiance Inpatient Center. He married Marilyn Deck and enjoyed 56 years together until her passing in 2010. James was a millwright at Jeep for many years but a farmer at heart. He enjoyed growing peanuts and giving them away to friends and family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Owen Carroll, sisters, Helen Adams and Charlotte (Fred) Lamb; and is survived by a son, Michael (Marcy) Carroll and daughter, Michelle Hendrix, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. William B. Nicely, 76, (class of 57) passed away at Fulton Manor in Wauseon on January 4, 2015. He married Midori Towatari in 1970 and she survives. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired in 1977 after 20 years as an Aviation Supply Chief. He also worked for 32 years as Director of Materials Management for the Fulton County Health Center. He is survived by his son, Ken (Debbie) Nicely; daughter, Debbie Nicely, a brother, Derald (Grace) Nicely; sister Karen (Bob) Schuller, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Larry Nicely in 2006. Bill enjoyed playing chess, poker, golfing, gardening, woodworking, reading and spending time with his family. Eldean Krieger, 74, of Parkville, MD passed away on January 6, 2015. He was the son of Archie ('18) and Ethel (Johnson) Krieger. Eldean and Jane Krieger have 6 children and were married 40 years. Eldean was a very talented organist and this was his lifetime vocation. Lorin Arthur Bickford, 94, of Delta, Ohio passed away peacefully on January 15, 2015, at the Elizabeth Scott Community. He was born April 9, 1920 in Pentwater, Michigan. He served in the United States Army Air Corps and was a WWII Veteran. On Feb. 12, 1944, he married Virginia May Willson ('36). Lorin was a lifelong farmer. His hobbies included woodworking and driving his 1929 Model A truck and 1931 Model A car in parades. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Karen ('63) (Bob) Grams, Linda ('66) (Andy) Nara, Jeff Bickford; 8 grandchildren, and sister Carol Powers. Lorin was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; siblings, Thelma, Charles, Norman, Lawrence; great-grandchild, Payton Grams, and longtime friend, Nora Jane Carroll. Dorothy Estel Forrest, 89,(class of 1944) of Swanton passed away Apr. 9, 2015 at Hospice of NW Ohio in Toledo. She married David Forrest, Jr in 1949 and enjoyed working at The Andersons for 16 years. Dorothy was a member of the St. Richards Catholic Parish. She will be missed by her husband of 65 years; sons Richard Forrest and Gary (Sue) Forrest; daughter, Diane Forrest and 7 grandchildren & 18 great-grandchildren, as well as her brother, John (Marilyn) Estel. Robert Carroll, 68, passed away April 10, 2015 at Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice. He had been a livelong farmer, an accountant for Penrod & George, and 20/20 Custom Molded Plastics. Robert was the son of Owen ('44) and Nora Jane (Vaughn) Carroll ('44). He married Paula J. Brashear in 1969 and she preceded him in death in 2011. He was past president of the Fulton County Farm Bureau, Wauseon Jaycees, Wauseon Elks Lodge, Wauseon Homecoming and elected into the Fulton Co. Agricultural Hall of Fame. Surviving are a son, David (Rebecca) Carroll, a daughter, Natalie (Jeremy) Shirkey, 5 grandchildren, 2 sisters, and a brother. FORMER TEACHER: Lucille M. Connin, 101, (just 10 days short of her 102nd birthday. ) of Bryan, Ohio passed away March 27, 2015 at Genesis Healthcare Center. Lucille was a teacher, beginning her teaching career in Ai, Ohio, and later at Lincoln Elementary School in Bryan from 1958 until her retirement in 1978 Lucille was born on April 7, 1913 at Archbold, and graduated from Archbold High School at the top of her class. She received her teaching degree at Bowling Green State University. She married Carson H. Connin in 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1958. Lucille is survived by her sons Ray (Patricia) Connin and John L. Connin, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren; and a brother Clare Grime. |
By Paul Harvey What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is once the most needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is �sir� to his face and �fuzz� to his back. He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won. But. if the policeman is neat, he's conceited; if he's careless, he's a bum. If he's pleasant, he's flirting; if not, he's a grouch. He must make an instant decision which would require months for a lawyer to make. But�if he hurries, he's careless; if he's deliberate, he's lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued. The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn't hurt. He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being �brutal.� If you hit him, he's a coward. If he hits you, he's a bully. A policeman must know everything-and not tell. He must know where all the sin is and not partake. A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal-and tell you where the criminal is hiding. But�if he catches the criminal, he's lucky; if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull; if he doesn't, he's a dullard. The policeman must chase a bum lead to a dead-end, stake out ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen-but refused to remember. The policeman must be a minister, social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman. And, of course, he'd have to be a genius�For he will have to feed a family on a policeman's salary. ******************************************************************************

ELDEST CITIZEN IN VILLAGE OF AI Ai History  Bert Shaffer says he and 90 year old Elmer Dolph about even at Euchre. Between the two Ai signs are 12 houses, a sprawling barn, an abandoned grain elevator, two general stores, a church and a cemetery. The rest of Ai extends south with a few more houses, the town hall, and Fulton Centralized School, which has been educating youngsters from the first grade through high school. Mrs. Harley Turpening and Mrs. Herbert Garsey, try as hard as they might, cannot count more than 90 residents in Ai today. Most of them farm and some of the younger ones commute to Toledo jobs. They point with pride to the modern school building constructed in 1926 to replace one ruined by fire the previous year. The state had a fight on its hands in trying to move the high school to Swanton or Delta. They're prideful also of electricity supplied the town by Toledo Edison Co. Only one house in Ai is without electricity and that is the house of Bert Shafer. �I listen to ball games at the store over its radio and when it's dark I sleep. I don't need electricity!�
For protection, Ai has Constable Lawrence Martin, whose main enemies of the law are traffic violators. He has plenty of time to farm and drive a dairy truck. A railroad through Swanton almost finished this place commercially, and the population declined from a few thousand to less than 100. For the dead, Ai has a pleasant little cemetery next to the Union Church. The tombstones record births and deaths of early Ai residents. One of the oldest stones has engraved on it that Jacob Hamp was born in 1770 and died in 1849. From Ira Brock's article in the Toledo Times. |
